CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. This was true for a long time, but in recent years microbreweries (especially on the West Coast) have been making inroads against Europe's traditional preeminence in the matter of beer.

Aug-25-13  JoergWalter: <AbdelIrada>are we talking microbreweries here?

if so, how about the german microbreweries? Do you know anything about those?

Aug-25-13  JoergWalter: <northernfox> agree. i go for Duwels, Palm, 1664 or Franziskaner anytime. I had a pretty decent canadian one but i forgot the name. or washed the braincells with the name away. but i think they sponsored chess events?

Yes, indeed. I think it is difficult to find a German lager that is less than first rate.

As for Canadian beers, I do not remember anything about a brewery chess sponsor, but there are several fine beers available made by non-mega-brewers you may have tried, or should try if you get the chance; tops on my list are:

Creemore Springs lager
Sleeman lager and Sleeman cream ale
Rickards Red ale

Sep-18-13  JoergWalter: @<northernfox>

the name was Molson. I think they were also willing to sponsor a match Fischer-Karpov in Fischer Random.

northernfox: <JW> Thanks for that interesting information; I had no idea of the chess connection. Molson is one of the traditional three mega-brewers in Canada, along with Labatt and Carling, though Molson is now Molson-Coors, some kind of American/Canadian multi-national.

In my view their beer is OK, but not as good as much of the beer coming from the smaller craft brewers.

I suspect Molson-Coors is now a lot more interested in hockey sponsorship than chess.

Sep-18-13  JoergWalter: <northernfox> you are welcome.

I found it in a chess magazine from 1995.Karpow met 2 members of the Molson family in Montreal in October 1995 to organize the match with Fischer. Seemingly Molson was also involved in sponsoring the 1979 tournament in Montreal.
