 | | IMlday: In the 1960's Vasiukov was a very interesting and instructive player. For speed chess his 1.e4 repertoire was open and useful. |
Nov-15-05 | | Robin01: <he was in this years Senior World Championship> He played good. Looks like he did not lose a game. |
Nov-15-05 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Sorry for nagging, <Robin01>, but he played "well". |
Nov-15-05 | | Robin01: <EmperorAtahualpa> Yes, you are correct. |
Nov-15-05 | | Phaethon: how did he do in the seniors did he come in the top 10? |
Nov-15-05
 | | IMlday: An early tournament pamphlet I acquired (second hand) was the Lasker Memorial, East Berlin, 1962. Vasiukov and Stein completely dominated. None of V's games from there seem to have made the CG database. |
Nov-15-05 | | WMD: Thanks in advance for submitting them. |
Nov-15-05
 | | IMlday: WMD, that's 43 years ago. You got any 90c cheap newsprint bulletins from 1962?
I do recall that both Stein and Vasyukov were playing 1.e4 e6 2.d3, and that I, 13, was plenty impressed. |

".. Since Vasiukov never placed near the top in Soviet Zonal competition, he was unable to earn an opportunity to play in an Interzonal tournament, where he might have done well in the mixed-strength fields featured there, as he excelled in similar circumstances in regular International tournaments. .." Dec-05-10 | | wordfunph: During the World Championship Match Tournament at Moscow and The Hague in 1948, a lot of youngsters in the Soviet Union became interested in chess. One day one of them walked into a House of Pioneers in Moscow and asked to learn chess. He barely knew the moves and, at fifteen years of age, he was considered a late starter. In fact, he was told he was too old to expect much in the way of mastery. However, he did not become discouraged and slowly made progress. In 1954 he became a master and in 1961 an international grandmaster. His career was not brilliant in the manner of Fischer's or Tal's, but he was always a very dangerous opponent --- in the 26 international tournaments in which he has played, he took first prize 11 times. - GM Lubosh Kavalek (on GM Evgeni Vasiukov)
