Dec-11-09 | | hedgeh0g: Considering McShane is essentially an amateur chess player now (he has a full time job at Goldman Sachs), I think he's done pretty well in this tournament so far. Magnus himself stated that he is considerably stronger than his current rating would suggest. |

 | | HeMateMe: < Considering McShane is essentially an amateur chess player now (he has a full time job at Goldman Sachs)> I'd rather have a job at GS than be a professional chess player. |
|
Dec-11-09 | | hedgeh0g: Maybe you'll get lucky and win an internship at GS as one of cg.com's Holiday Hunt prizes! |

 | | HeMateMe: being on Wall street is like that old saying, "in russia, one man laughs and 99 men cry." They are disproportionately paid, in comparison to the rest of the work force. A couple of years ago, one of the big finalncial houses here, might have been Sachs, hired the Rolling Stones to play a concert, just for the employees of this WS firm. It must be nice to have enough money to hire the Stones for your Xmas party? As the show began, Jagger said to the people "I hope you enjoy this--it's coming out of your bonuses!" |

 | | alexrawlings: Magnus Carlsen recently wrote in his blog <My opponent today was 25 year old Luke McShane, the British number 3. Having studied at Oxford followed by a career in the City, he is now a full time professional chess player, and clearly stronger than his current rating of 2615.> is it true that he's now a full time pro? Here's a link to the blog in case anyone is interested http://www.arcticsec.no/index.php?b... |

Dec-18-09 | | MaxxLange: McShane's job may have been lost to "restructuring". He was working in the financial industry, right? I think the British English euphemism is "made redundant". That seems very cruel, on the level of subtle meanings from words. In America, you get "laid off". That's something that HAPPENS to You, good old You. Being "made redundant" is so personal sounding. You are different - you are not You, who happens to have been laid-off, You are now redefined as "redundant". Your "You" is redundant, it's not just a victim of bad luck. Total speculation from me - I know nothing about Mr. McShane's arrangements or recent career decisions |

 | | HeMateMe: So he's not an actual employee, now, of the venerable GS? Well, when Wall Street lays off people, their affiliates all around the world have to lay off people too. Its all connected. If he was a good trader, I'm sure he'll hook up with another firm or get hired back by Goldman when the market improves. The expression sometimes used here is: "Its a recession when your neighbor gets laid off; its a DEPRESSION when you get laid off." |
|
Dec-30-09 | | Squares: Redundant just means superfluous to requirements. Nothing to do with a "you" at all. |
|
Jan-07-10 | | SamAtoms1980: Happy 26th Birthday! Two big wins in London, and tied for first in the Rilton Cup. A damn good month. |
|
Jan-07-10 | | MaxxLange: <Squares> I'm sure "made redundant" sounds perfectly normal if you're used to it. Anyway, it does not really matter what they call it, when it happens. As I say, I have no idea what McShane's story is: someone up-thread was saying that he was playing chess full time now. If so, he may have just chosen to do that. |

Nov-29-10 | | wordfunph: Third Remco Heite: In addition to the prize money, the winner gets a check that allows a local charity to buy a horse for their equestrian therapy. 2010 edition was won by English GM Luke McShane. Originally the intention that the winner should get a horse as a prize, but it turned out that you are not allowed to give someone a horse as a gift in Holland, which is why the winner of the first edition in 2006, Loek van Wely, was not able to take possession of his new pet. The next
winner in 2008, Bartlomiej Macieja, donated it to a local charity for handicapped children, which worked with horses. http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Kramnik: Luke, I am your father!
Luke: Noooo!
Kramnik: Luke.. Join my preparation team and we will rule Anand! After I die, you will be my successor! Luke: I'll never join you!
Kramnik: *Shrugs* Okay. See ya later.
Luke: Ummm....
Scene: 2014, World Chess championship. Luke-Anand.
It is the final game. Whoever wins this is the WC. Luke is a horrible position, on the brink of losing. Anand: Now... You will lose!
Luke: I will never give up.
Anand uses the force to threaten the pawn on h3.
Luke: I... I...
Anand: Give up?
Kramnik: Noooo!!
Anand: What are you doing here?
Kramnik: *Grabs Anand and jumps out the window!* "Aaaaaaah!" Luke: Noooo! They're dead....
Kramnik: No, we're okay.
Anand: Get off of me.... Urghh...
During all of this, Luke finds the brilliant queen sacrifice, and Anand resigns. |
