MARK PARAGUA
(born Mar-29-1984, 41 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Mark Paragua became the youngest Filipino master ever when he was 9 years old. He became the Philippines' youngest IM when he was 14 years and 8 months old, although this record has now been superceded by Wesley So who became an IM at the age of 12 years and 10 months. In August 2005, at the age of 20, he became the youngest ever Filipino Grand Master until Wesley So broke his record by achieving the GM title a couple of months after his 14th birthday.

He qualified for the World Cup (2011) via Asian Zonal 3.3, but lost to English super-GM Michael Adams in the first round. He came =3rd (4th on tiebreak) with 6.5/9 at the HD Bank Open held in Ho Chi Minh City in March 2013 and =2nd (3rd on tiebreak) at the 2013 Asian Continental Championship, thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2013) where he lost to Russian super-GM Dmitry Jakovenko in the first round, and exited the contest.

Nov-12-06  castofclowns: IM Wesley So just got his first GM norm!! Bravo Wesley!!

He can even afford to lose his game in round 8 and still get the norm provided that his last round pairing would be against a 2500+ GM. Now with the norm under his belt, he might go all out for the win against Georgiev, nothing to lose Wesley, but lots to gain, go for it! There will be no pressure from norm seeking, go for the kill kid!

Nov-12-06  balweg214: The 9th round (last round) of the 10.OIBM Bad Wiessee have started 5:00 PM (PHI time), Nov. 12.

Go! Wesley!! Go!

Nov-12-06  castofclowns: So draws his game! IM Laylo needs a draw for the GM norm!
Nov-12-06  castofclowns: If Laylo wins he tied with 7.5/9 players at first place. 7 pointers Al-modiahki losses while Shabalov draws. So far, only GM Shabalov and GM Halkias were the only players that were able to score 7.5. So would be at second place, tied with a big group of 7/9 players.
Nov-12-06  castofclowns: Laylo draws his game and earned his 2nd GM norm!!.
Nov-12-06  renecon: Impressive performance by our Pinoy Brothers. I just hope the GMA tourney will have a site like this one in Germany where we can kibitz their game and monitor the day to day games.
Nov-12-06  SCustodio: Did Jayson Gonzales get his final GM norm here? He played 4 GMs I think. Thanks.
Nov-12-06  renecon: Dont know. The site is under construction to show latest result
Nov-12-06  castofclowns: dont worry <@renecon> i live near the tournament's venue and ill give some information (results, gamescore, news) bout the tournament either here @ chessgames or in NCFP forum.
Nov-12-06  SCustodio: Latest result is already there. So, Laylo, Gonzales, Dimakiling all 7.0 points tied for 3rd to 20th spots. A big one for RP chess!
Nov-12-06  genex: Congratulations, Wesley, for a very very solid performance in the 10th OIBM in Bad Wiessee; 2 wins and 4 draws against GM’s in the last 6 rounds! The same goes to Darwin Laylo who also gets another GM norm, as well as the other three Pinoy chess players who had a strong showing in a tournament participated in by 4 super GM's, 24 GM’s and 2 WGM’s.

Final ranking (9 rounds, Swiss system):
7. (40) So, Wesley (ELO 2411) – 7 points
10. (34) Laylo, Darwin (ELO 2448) – 7 points
17. (38) Gonzales, Jayson (ELO 2418) – 7 points
20. (25) Dimakiling, Oliver (ELO 2476) – 7 points
29. (50) Gomez, John Paul (ELO 2387) – 6.5 points

Nov-12-06  castofclowns: Rtg W N Rc K TPR Rtg.
Oliver Dimakiling 2476 7 9 2333 10 2556 +7.9
Darwin Laylo 2448 7 9 2391 10 2613 +17.8
Jayson Gonzales 2418 7 9 2335 10 2557 +15.1
Wesley So 2411 7 9 2397 10 2619 +23.2
John Paul Gomez 2387 6.5 9 2387 15 2459 +12.45
Nov-12-06  genex: <SCustodio> asked, “Did Jayson Gonzales get his final GM norm here? He played 4 GMs I think. Thanks.”

Can somebody please compute/calculate if he has achieved the norm, based on the FIDE handbook in <www.fide.com/official/handbook.asp?level=B0101>, and the OIBC, Bad Wiessee results table in <www.oibm-bad-wiessee.de/Rangliste.php>?

Nov-12-06  anakbuwan: yeah...I think it should be enough but we'll see. Does the performance rating matter ? That's the only problem I see as Jayson only performed at 2557 (per cast's calculation)
Nov-12-06  genex: I see now…according to the FIDE Handbook 1.48, in order to achieve a GM norm, a player must perform at a level of at least 2601 performance rating; and for IM norm, 2451. That means, Jayson does not get a GM norm, but John Paul gets his IM norm. Tama ba?
Nov-12-06  rainbowxpress: Many good news coming out lately in the Philippines. Ronnie Alcano won the World Pool Championship for one. Then So and company came out with good results in this tournament. Next maybe it will be Paquiao's turn. Ang galing talaga ang mga Pinoy. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!
Nov-13-06  castofclowns: If Jayson Gonzales opponents rating calculation should be computed it will fall at a 2595 Performance Rating, too close for the GM norm. Had he played a 2500+ opponent in his last round and won he surely have earned the GM norm and therefore the GM title (since he already have 2 norms)

Here's the computation

RAW Score :

Rtg W N Rc K TPR Rtg.
Oliver Dimakiling 2476 7 9 2333 10 2556 +7.9
Darwin Laylo 2448 7 9 2391 10 2613 +17.8
Jayson Gonzales 2418 7 9 2335 10 2557 +15.1
Wesley So 2411 7 9 2397 10 2619 +23.2
John Paul Gomez 2387 6.5 9 2387 15 2459 +12.45

ADJUSTED SCORE

Rtg W N Rc K TPR
Oliver Dimakiling 2476 7 9 2367 10 2590
Darwin Laylo 2448 7 9 2428 10 2650
Jayson Gonzales 2418 7 9 2373 10 2595
Wesley So 2411 7 9 2442 10 2665
John Paul Gomez 2387 6.5 9 2330 15 2500

Nov-13-06  castofclowns: John Paul Gomez already meet the IM title requirements in the last World Jr. and by gaining lots of rating point in 2 tournaments after that.(Calvia and Bad Wiessee). These could be his 5th IM norm. You only needed 3 norms and a rating of 2400 to get the IM Title.
Nov-13-06  castofclowns: http://www.oibm-bad-wiessee.de/Pres...

Its from official site; Laylo and So secures their respective GM norm.

Nov-14-06  genex: Congratulations to Wesley and Darwin for obtaining the GM norm. Interestingly the news bulletin of the website of OIBM, Bad Wiessee released on Nov. 13 ends with this description of our 5 Pinoy players as an “extremely strong-playing Philippine delegation.” Truly so, for in the last round the 10th seeded GM Konstantin Landa’s effort to extract a win against Darwin went in vain; he had to be contented with a draw. And GM Vladimir Georgiev had to settle for a draw with Wesley in just 10 moves!

It says this in German: “Auch einige Titelnormen wurden erzielt: ...GM-Normen gab es für den erst 13-Jährigen Wesley So und Darwin Laylo, beide aus der äußerst spielstarken philippinischen Delegation.”

Mabuhay!

Nov-14-06  jofre: 2 gm scored 7.5 out of 9 at bad weissee.18 scored 7/9 and have 14 Gm and only 4 Ims.did you know the nationalities of the 4 Ims? he he he PINOY.alcano wins.praying bobby and manny pacquiao next week.PINOY!!!truly AMAZING.
Nov-14-06  genex: That's a good observation, <Jofre>. Our 4 Pinoy IM's barged into the top 20 with 16 GM's who scored at least 7.0 points! Sensational performance!
Nov-14-06  anakbuwan: why do I feel like we get more updated chess news here than the NCPF...I know that the site is just starting, but not even breaking news ?! maybe they should hire Castofclown to do the update for them...it seems that a lot of people here are more enthusiastic. oh well, I'll wait longer.
Nov-14-06  castofclowns: he he he he

Thanks <anakbuwan>, kaso ala pang offer sa akin eh.

Nov-14-06  renecon: Here is another link about Pinoy chessplayers.http://closetgrandmaster.blogspot.c... I just don't know who is the closet grandmaster but he gives ua a lot of infos about pinoy players.
