MARK PARAGUA
(born Mar-29-1984, 41 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Mark Paragua became the youngest Filipino master ever when he was 9 years old. He became the Philippines' youngest IM when he was 14 years and 8 months old, although this record has now been superceded by Wesley So who became an IM at the age of 12 years and 10 months. In August 2005, at the age of 20, he became the youngest ever Filipino Grand Master until Wesley So broke his record by achieving the GM title a couple of months after his 14th birthday.

He qualified for the World Cup (2011) via Asian Zonal 3.3, but lost to English super-GM Michael Adams in the first round. He came =3rd (4th on tiebreak) with 6.5/9 at the HD Bank Open held in Ho Chi Minh City in March 2013 and =2nd (3rd on tiebreak) at the 2013 Asian Continental Championship, thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2013) where he lost to Russian super-GM Dmitry Jakovenko in the first round, and exited the contest.

Chessers hope to follow Alcano example

AFTER the sensational triumph of Ronnie Alcano in world billiards, Filipino chess players also hope to do well and bring honors to the country when the first Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Cup international chess tournament comes off the wraps on Friday, Nov. 17 at the Duty Free Fiesta Mall in Parañaque.

A brainchild of National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president and Surigao del Sur Rep. Prospero Pichay Jr. in cooperation with Duty Free Philippines, the prestigious seven-day tournament in honor of the country’s No. 1 sports patron is expected to attract close to 120 foreign and local players vying for the ,000 (about R1.5 million).

President Arroyo will personally make the ceremonial moves with Pichay during the 10 a.m. opening ceremony.

Also invited during the opening rites are Department of Tourism Secretary Robert Ace Durano, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Butch Ramirez and Duty Free general manager Michael Kho.

"Everything is ready. With the participation of highly-rated foreign players from Russia, the United States and other Asian countries and a whopping cash prize amounting to US ,000, the GMA Cup will surely be the biggest international chess tournament in recent years," said Pichay during the formal launch at the Duty Free Fiesta Mall yesterday.

Also gracing the launching were NCFP secretary general and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino, FIDE delegate Casto "Toti’ Abundo and tournament director Wilfredo Abalos.

Super GMs Alexander Onishuk (ELO 2668) of the United States and Zhang Pengxiang (ELO 2636) of China head the list of foreign participants vying for the top purse of US ,000.

Also in the registry are GMs Ni Hua (ELO 2621) and Zhang Zhong (ELO 2609) of China, GM Varushan Akobian (ELO 2598) of the United States, GMs Utut Adianto (ELO 2589) of Indonesia, GM Viktor Mikhalevski (ELO 2580) of Israel, and GM Edhi Handoko (ELO 2441) of Indonesia; and IMs Tahir Vakhidov (ELO 2522) of Uzbekistan, Wang Rui (ELO 2463), Zhou Weigi (ELO 2435) and Wang Li (ELO 2226), all of China.

The Philippines will be represented by its five GMs – Mark Paragua, Eugene Torre, Rogelio Antonio Jr., Nelson Mariano II and Singapore-based Buenaventura Villamayor, Asian Games-bound IMs Darwin Laylo and Ronald Dableo, GM-candidate Wesley So and John Paul Gomez and other top-rated IMs.

Aside from the top prize of US,000, the winner will also bring home the coveted GMA Cup.

The runner-up and third placer will receive US,000 and US,000, respectively.

Cash prizes will also be given to the fourth to 15 th placers.

The top three Filipino players, the top three women and the top three junior participants will also bring home cash prizes.

Nov-15-06  castofclowns: <Important Notice>: There are some chess reporters (no, they do not qualify as journalists) who are going around soliciting funds for a “Journalist Chess Foundation” from chess enthusiasts and parents. Oftentimes they have used my name as one of its founders.

I want to be absolutely clear here:

1. To my knowledge there is NO such thing as a Journalist Chess Foundation;

2. Even if there were, I have never been and do not intend to ever be connected with it. Indeed, if the people going around to ask for money are any indication of the caliber of its members, then no good will ever come of it;

3. I have not asked anyone to solicit funds for any foundation; and

4. If someone should approach you with such a request please take steps to make sure that he is beaten up within an inch of death.

Nov-19-06  art00: Sorry if this is not about chess but its about a Filipino Triumph in Sports.

Quote from fightnews.com:

<"Pacquiao destroys Morales!

Sunday, November 19 2006

By Mike Sloan, Victor Perea, Albert Howell at ringside

A near-record crowd of 18,276 saw super featherweight superstar Manny Pacquaio (43-3-2, 33 KOs) annihilate Erik Morales (48-5, 24 KOs) on Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas. After a slow first round, Pacquiao dropped Morales with a left hand in round two. Erik got up and fought back hard. Pacquiao knocked down Morales again hard in round three and again Erik got up and bravely traded. Pacman was too much, however, flooring Morales again. This time Morales just sat on the canvas and shook his head no. Pacquiao wins by KO at 2:57 of round three.">

Nov-19-06  rainbowxpress: There are really many reasons why Filipinos are rejoicing this November because of the exploits of the likes of Alcano in Billiards, IMs So, Gomez, Laylo, etc in chess, now Pacquiao in boxing.

Many more to come perhaps, like the Asiad Games in Doha, Qatar this December.

Looks like PGMA is grinning from ear-to-ear nowadays! Philippines is on the road to recovery. With Honasan's capture, pesos appreaciating vs dollars, rising exports, victories in sports, etc.

Are these all signs of our nation's recovery! What do you think?

Nov-19-06  genex: It makes me envious whenever I think of the recent chess event in Bad Wiessee, Germany in view of the on-going PGMA Cup Challenge. Bad Wiessee is a small town with a population of only 70 thousand, but as a host of the chess event for the Bavarian region of Germany, it had an official website that posted at the start of the tournament the list of all the participants. Then it reported daily the results, the pairings, the tabulation of the results towards the end, and daily news bulletin. It had the live games of the top 8 boards/pairings!

It shows me that the German organizers are really concerned that the interest in chess is kept alive, because chess enthusiasts who cannot go to Bad Wiesse can follow the games in the tournament site. Their logistics in their website is very efficient!

Now comes the on-going 1st PGMA Cup Open and Chess Challenge in Metro Manila. It has no official website! We have to get bits and pieces of late news-updates from other sources! Dios mio, even the prizes that are listed in the web address <www.nationalchessfederationofthephilippines.com/gmacup- .php> are those for the unrated players, and does not even say so! What an impression such gives to the international chess community. I refuse to believe that our Filipino chess organizers are inefficient! Such a big tournament pa naman in terms of cash prizes! Pagpasiyensiyahan na lang natin muna, and hope that something will happen in the website by the middle part of the tournament; hindi pa naman huli.

Nov-19-06  TheClosetGM: Over at TCG we do receive the daily pool reports almost immediately after they are released. This is why we provide updates to GMA a good few hours before you read them in the daily papers in RP. There does not appear to be any reason why the official site couldn't be as equally obliging.

Having said that, we should acknowledge that this GMA event is the first of its kind in RP in a long while and, I would say, the organisers are probably just novices in this kind of thing. It is quite unfair to compare the RP guys to the Germans or even Australians who do a lot of live broadcasting and net coverage. In Australia, where I live, even some weekenders are broadcast live on the net with updates almost by the hour.

All I'm saying is that let's not be too harshly critical. Let's be proud that this level of competition can be organised in RP. Australians can't even managed that.

Nov-19-06  castofclowns: <TCG> I dont think that the kind of work they put on online brodcasting/update can be justified by an alibi such as "this is the first of its kind in RP in a long while". Sorry guys but i dont buy such crap. You Have such huge prizes for the winners and then neglect one of the most vital part of the tourney? San ka kukuha ng sponsors? Mag-bibitaw ba ng pera yan sa ganyang klase ng coverage? Hey it doesnt need a computer wizard to do such coverage, as done by the Germans. You dont need high profile chess journalist nor chess software to do that. DIOS MIO, results were not even updated, even pairings and initial players list!!1

Tsk tsk tsk If only they ask help from Bobby Ang, or if they only sought people who really have a heart for the game.

Nov-19-06  SCustodio: That's true Castofclowns. All I need is a simple Excel format reporting or just simple Word. Where are the results of the 4th Round? It is already finished. There is no excuse for mediocrity much more laziness.
Nov-19-06  renecon: How about the issue of those 3 GMs who doesn't want to play Swiss System? Why are they playing in this tournament?
Nov-19-06  anakbuwan: dinero mi amigo :)
Nov-19-06  castofclowns: dinero es segunda en nacionales es primera.

Gusto ko sana post mga results, some games and news happening around the tournament pero baka sabihin masyado tayo pasikat at ma-epal eh.

Nov-19-06  castofclowns: @<renecon> the 3 GM's stated that they dont want to play in the Asian Games qualifying tournament if the system to be used is Swiss. They doesnt atate that they dont like to play on swiss touneys. Malaki ata pagkakaiba non. :)

Its like Kasparov's argument against the FIDE KO system in crowning a World Champion. He doesnt want to play in such system for the world championship, but it doesnt prohibits himself in playing in other KO tournaments.

Get the point.

Nov-19-06  renecon: Casti, I admire your knowledge in Philippine chess politics. How about creating a blog for Philippine Chess? I only read news about Philippine Chess through internet. Been away for 27 years. Love for chess lang itong sa akin.
