MARK PARAGUA
(born Mar-29-1984, 41 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Mark Paragua became the youngest Filipino master ever when he was 9 years old. He became the Philippines' youngest IM when he was 14 years and 8 months old, although this record has now been superceded by Wesley So who became an IM at the age of 12 years and 10 months. In August 2005, at the age of 20, he became the youngest ever Filipino Grand Master until Wesley So broke his record by achieving the GM title a couple of months after his 14th birthday.

He qualified for the World Cup (2011) via Asian Zonal 3.3, but lost to English super-GM Michael Adams in the first round. He came =3rd (4th on tiebreak) with 6.5/9 at the HD Bank Open held in Ho Chi Minh City in March 2013 and =2nd (3rd on tiebreak) at the 2013 Asian Continental Championship, thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2013) where he lost to Russian super-GM Dmitry Jakovenko in the first round, and exited the contest.

Nov-19-06  SCustodio: Any update on 4th round results yesterday?

Thanks for the info.

Nov-20-06  SCustodio: Dear TheClosetGM;

Thanks for the info. Please try if you can run their web for them. Coordinate with castofclowns. It's funny I guess ironic is the word that RP is very poor on the web when the "great" hacker/s has originated from us. But keep on posting anyway and thks if you can give us the sixth round.

Nov-20-06  castofclowns: I cant stand it anymore, too much, no mas! Mukhang kawawa naman tayo, i think ill take a leave/break kahit 2 days lang sa job, so i can come up with some report/news about the PGMA Cup. Might create a temporary webpage for the event and put some decency naman sa Philippine Chess. Buti kung local event lang, kaso since the internet boom sumabay na rin ang Chess, look at Singapore's website, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia and even Brunei, dyahe na yung atin, mukhang kawawa naman tayo kapag ganyan. Look at Bobby Ang, our country's top chess journo, sa indochess pa nagpopost ng articles. he used to master a website then called "Filipinos Play Chess", It has regular articles from his chesspiece column in Businessworld (lufet ng broadsheet na yan, ala kang mabibili sa bangketa nyan, pang "alta sociedad" lang yan), opening theories (beating the CK, A sicilian repetoire, etc etc.)current state of philippine chess (tournaments, games and my favorite topic of all "politics"), Filipino chess players advent in other countries for chess excellence, even poems, rhymes and anecdotes adorn this website, a mark not only of free style in sportd journalism but a trickle of literary enjoyment, a jab of humour, and a heart full of love to the game.

tsk tsk tsk those were the days

Nov-20-06  renecon: Her is another blog created by Chess Kiku. http://philippinechesschronicles.bl... It's a start and I'm grateful to all of you.Talagang hilig lang 'to. Panahon pa nang makinilya ako pero natututo ako sa computer at internet and learned about current events in chess sa Pinas dahil sa inyo. Mabuhay kayo!
Nov-20-06  rainbowxpress: The NCFP Website was engineered by TC Montano, according to its homepage. I surmised that he was commissioned by the association for a fee. Hence, his scope of work might not be inclusive of updating, maintenance, etc. Another, possible reason perhaps, is that he might not have collected yet his due.

Whatever reason it may be, TC Montano, should be patriotic enough to at least update and maintain the website until the completion of the GMA tournament for the sake of national pride!

Nov-21-06  castofclowns: tommy clyde montano yup thats the name! You can email him: tommyclyde@gmail.com
Nov-21-06  SCustodio: Hey guys it looks like finally they have heard us. There is now a matrix for the scores and participants.
Nov-21-06  castofclowns: YUP! CAST (casto abundo) have put up the result in the previous round. Thanks Cast! and BTW there are already 3! games for online viewing! What a "BIG" improvement! Thank You ha.
Nov-21-06  rainbowxpress: It's better late than never! Thanks for the answered prayer!
Nov-21-06  SCustodio: Laylo really needs some more improvement to be real a GM. He cannot lose a game just like that. That's why So is making great progress. He just don't lose a game. He's getting respect from GMs. We saw that at Bad Weiss(?)
Nov-22-06  rainbowxpress: After round 6, is there a chance IM Laylo finally gets the coveted GM norm to achieve full GM status in in the ongoing GMA tournament?
Nov-22-06  castofclowns: Hmmmm let me see, i think Wesley So's GM norm might have a problem coz i think he needs to meet 3 GM's (different federation than his) to be able to get the norm, therefore in the next 2 rounds he should face 2 foreign GM. Dableo i think have a better chance in nailing that GM norm, he only needs 1 out of 2 and hopefully one of his opponent is a foreign GM.He was beaten by Akobian in the 3rd round and have drawn his game against Ni Hua earlier (round 7)Im working on the tourney's x-table and im also looking for IM norm seekers probability of getting the norm.
Nov-22-06  rainbowxpress: Looks like the posting of latest results is still unattended to. Nasaan na yung round 7 results? I understand, round 8 is already in progress.
Nov-22-06  TheClosetGM: For round 7, go to my blog: http://closetgrandmaster.blogspot.c...

He he he ako din.

Nov-22-06  SCustodio: Dear Mr. Closet GM:

There are some results of Round 8 already on the NCFP web. Can your spy get the whole results of the top players? Thanks.

Nov-22-06  castofclowns: Dableo have earned his 2nd GM norm! Even if he loses his last game against Onischuk he still get that norm!

Computations:
Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Ausan,Leotito 2250 1-0

Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Akobian,Varuzhan 2598 0-1

Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Khairul,Anam 2351 1-0

Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Torre,Eugenio 2552 1-0

Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Paragua,Mark 2587 ½-½

Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Ni,Hua 2621 ½-½

Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Barbosa,Oliver 2414 1-0

Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Dela Cruz,Richard 2250 1-0

Dableo,Ronald 2425 - Onischuk,Alexander 2668

Average Rating Opponents:22921/9=2476.77 or 2477

Falls under the 2476-2520 bracket which states that he needed to 6/9 to get the norm.

YES! Hope come Asiad Games Dableo can secure his 3rd norm!

Nov-22-06  castofclowns: If we will compute for his Performance Rating and make it as the basis of his GM norm it will come out like this:

If we assume he loses to Onischuk, his score would be 6/9 against opponents whose average rating is 2476.77 (2477), this will result a 2601 Performance Rating which is good enough for a GM Norm.

http://www.fide.com/official/handbo...

Nov-22-06  micrab: Aside from Dableo, any other Pinoy masters who have earned or about to earn their norms? I believe that little known Ahmed Nouri who is a revelation in this tournament is bound to have one. And how about Wesley So's prospect for a Gm norm going to the last round? He will be facing another Gm, Belov.
Nov-23-06  castofclowns: Torre and Severino loses by default! Tsk tsk tsk this is what im stating in my previous post, ineptness and incompetencies! Look at what torre said, ngayon lang daw nangyari sa kanya yan, hmmmm tagal non ah.
Nov-23-06  renecon: Only in the Phlippines!!!!!!!!!
Nov-23-06  jofre: So, Wesley did not get a GM norm? he lost to GM Belov in the last round.nasira yata sa diskarting short draws (with Pinoy opponents).tsk tsk.well, not so bad for a 13 years old with 1 gm norm na.still a lot of time, naaaaaaaaaaapakaraming pang time. Good luck Wesley,go for the throat next time. GOD BLESS
Nov-24-06  art00: The Kramnik vs Deep Fritz 2006 match starts with the first game today. The game is scheduled for 3:00 pm (Bonn, Germany time)... which, I believe, is at 10:00 pm, Philippine Standard Time.
