Honza Cervenka: <Current FIDE rating: 2064> Well, there are two Nonas on the FIDE ELO list. One of them is this Nona Gaprindashvili, former woman world champion and grandmaster from Georgia born in 1941 and her current rating is 2349. The other Nona Gaprindashvili is a young girl (b. 1991) from Russia (probably from St. Petersburg as she played in several tournaments there included junior city championships) with current rating (July 2009) 2042 and maximum 2089 in January 2009.   Honza Cervenka: <blackburne: achieve the men's Grandmaster title because win the women world championship. The first woman to achieve the GM title with 3 GM norms is Zsuzsa Polgar in 1991> Well, this is technically true but you should know that conditions for achieving GM title were radically different and I would say much harder before early 1980s when current regulations were introduced. Retrospectively Nona Gaprindashvili would have become a man's GM easily before 1980 if current regulations for GM norms would be applied then and she fulfilled some GM norms in 1980s after becoming a GM too. The same can be said about Maia Chiburdanidze as well.

Jan-19-10  Everett: Did she have Bronstein as a trainer at some point?

Very interesting post, thanks.

May-03-10  wordfunph: Nona Gaprindashvili had a perfume named after her in Russia. A Tbilisi perfume factory sold the perfume in a bottle shaped like a chess Queen.

she turned 69 today..

HeMateMe: This is the same Nona (best woman player during Bob's hey day) that Fischer claimed he could "give Knight odds to". Well, I'd bet on the Georgian legend, on that one.
Dec-28-10  waustad: Chess Metrics had her over 2600 in '88. That's a while ago. BTW, there are 2 Nona Gaprindashvili's in the FIDE rating list. The 2042 rated player is the Russian one. The Georgian Nona is rated 2363.
Mar-12-11  kevins55555: The World Champs Cycle goes from this:Nona Gaprindashvili then Maia Chiburdanidze then Xie Jun then Zsuzsa Polgar.
Apr-08-11  BLarsen1967: a promising start for the One & Only Nona in the Euro Senior Champ.,with 2.5 points out of 3. But the real test'll be tomorrow where she's up against GM Gennadij Timoscenko - GO Nona ! http://scacchivda.com/escc_2011/esc...

Aug-20-12  waustad: She's playing in the European Senior Champs now. The world senior champs take men over 60 or women over 50. Nona is over the age limit for both and is the highest rated senior woman now, but Pia Cramling may be eligible next year.
Aug-22-12  waustad: Since Tatyana Fomina is playing, women can play in their 50s.
Apr-21-13  waustad: Congratulations on induction to the chess HOF: http://usa.chessdom.com/us-world-ch...
