Feb-03-14  waustad: When she was a teenager and in her 20s she was as close to a "chess babe" as there was, though she did not embrace the role at all. Remember that the big names then were Nona G. and Maia C. Here is a more flattering picture http://en.chessbase.com/post/sigema...

perfidious: When we met at the 1985 NY Open, Pia was certainly a name player, though of course Chiburdanidze was the champion at the time. Seemed a bit shy, though I am sure she met people everywhere she went.
Feb-03-14  Granny O Doul: I saw Cramling at that NYO, too. Seemed cute enough to me. A bit shy, I guess, and rather unpretentious. Last I saw her, she was watching Adorjan's simul at the Manhattan CC, which she had visited, while waiting for her ride, I guess. HEY PIA, I DREW ADORJAN! Are you impressed??

  HeMateMe: Waustad--much better picture, indeed.
Mar-13-14  waustad: Her performance this year in the Swedish league was excellent. Playing 8 rounds out of nine she went +5 =3 -0, beating everybody rated lower and drawing with those equal or higher. http://www.schack.se/?page_id=58
Apr-23-14  waustad: Happy B'day! I guess the CG folks must have been pals with Lembit Oll, since he is always the POTD on April 23rd, but you, Tony Miles and Alexandra Kosteniuk all deserve some love too.
May-05-14  waustad: In a Swedish Women's tournament I just ran across she won all of her games except for one draw, against Anna Cramling. http://chess-results.com/tnr120942....
Aug-01-14  waustad: This year she's playing for the Swedish women's team this time. She's played 4 times for the men and this will be the 7th for the women. Her first appearance in the olympiads was in 1978, where she went +7 as a 15 year old reserve.

She has a website in Swedish: http://www.piacramling.com/sh.php

HeMateMe: Pia is perhaps the most experienced active Olympiad player, male or female? No one else from her generation is competing anymore, or, they have dropped down too far to be chosen for the Olympiad.
Aug-02-14  waustad: <HHM>Perhaps Barbara Hund should get that title. She's a few years older and has been playing for either Germany or Switzerland very often. This will be her 15th olympiad. Pia Cramling has played 4 times in the men's section and this will be her 7th time in the women's section. Has anybody still active played in more?
Aug-02-14  Olavi: <HHM> Eugenio Torre, 12 years older, is still in the Philippines line up. And his olympiads, well have to check.
Aug-02-14  Olavi: TorreĀ“s 22nd appearance, the absolute record. Portisch scored 20.
Aug-02-14  Nerwal: <Pia is perhaps the most experienced active Olympiad player, male or female? No one else from her generation is competing anymore, or, they have dropped down too far to be chosen for the Olympiad.>

Probably not overall, maybe in the women section (since Chiburdanidze seems to have stepped down despite her respectable rating). By number of games played Short and Beliavsky are ahead. By date of appearance Werner Hug first played at Skopje in 1972 after his junior world title.

Still keeping up a steady 2500 level for more than 25 years is a great achievement.

Aug-02-14  Olavi: Torre has 250 games, Portisch 260; the pre-1970 (when Torre started competing) olympiads were longer.
Jan-27-15  waustad: Here is a picture of Anna from a Swedish Girls championship (if I'm reading it right.) http://www.schack.se/wp/wp-content/... She's playing in the amateur sections again at Gibraltar.
Mar-18-15  waustad: Pia made it through the first round of the WWCC knock out round and will play Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant in the second round. In other news, Anna has been gaining elo very rapidly in the recent past, picking up over 200 pts in the amateur sections at Gibraltar and a tournament in Vaxjo Sweden, this after picking up over 100 at the Rilton 1800 section. That's over 300 elo in two months. It looks like it won't be long before she has her own page here.
Mar-29-15  cro777: Pia Cramling reached semi-finals in Sochi. Still going strong at 51.

HeMateMe: Congratulations, Pia. A fine run to the semis!
Apr-01-15  diagonal: Nice interview with the <Grande Dame of Chess>, Pia Cramling - just remember, she is born the same year and same month as Garry Kasparov, in April 1963, and still playing chess on highest (female) level: http://www.chessdom.com/pia-cramlin...
Apr-23-15  waustad: Have Pia Cramling, Tony Miles or Alexandra Kosteniuk ever been POTD? Happy Birthday to all!
Oct-05-15  waustad: She is now at +1 in the Women's Grand Prix, which is being held in Monaco. Most of the top female players in the world are there. http://monaco2015.fide.com/

HeMateMe: wasn't she playing Hou in the first round? +1?
Oct-05-15  waustad: Yes. Hou Yifan is also at +1, both have one loss and two wins. Koneru Humpy and Mariya Muzychuk lead at +2 after 3 rounds.
