Dec-20-07 | | Benzol: Tony have you ever played David Moody at any stage? |
Dec-21-07
 | | Phony Benoni: <Benzol> Three games, with the score 2-1 in my favor (wins in 1982 and 1989, loss in 1999). That's misleading, though, since I've lost quite a few steps while Tony has continued to improve. |
Dec-21-07 | | Benzol: <Phony Benoni> Thanks Dave. I figured you must have crossed paths somewhere both playing in the Michigan area. Are the games of a quality to include in the DB? |
Dec-21-07
 | | Phony Benoni: <Benzol> Tony's win was probably the best of the three, but I'll let him ne the judge of that. |

 | | tpstar: <reillav> Nice to hear from you! Yes, while you were Captain of the Quiz Bowl Team, I was First Board on the Chess Team. :-) Six of my games here were during high school, and of course nowadays my chess exploits have an international following. Last I heard you were playing "Truth or Dare" with Madonna in Chicago. Is that you at DePaul or one of your many namesakes? I hope you feel better, and I really hope you get a computer with a "Shift" key to create capital letters. ;>D Best from the Ghost of the Present ... |

 | | tpstar: <fictionist: Hello tpstar. Are you a doctor?> The stock response is "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV" which was a very silly fake testimonial advertising slogan in the 80's trying to pitch medications. I am an Internal Medicine physician, which is primary care for adults. St. Joseph is on Lake Michigan with a huge retirement community, thus a large portion of my practice is Geriatrics. Your profile says you enjoy discussing "medical stuff" which is great, but at the same time I would caution you about sharing medical knowledge on this site. Laypeople can be prone to insisting on a certain fixed belief so strongly that it defies reason, like Hypertension and Headaches constituting "very bad health" and "seriously ill" and such. This is the voice of experience here. Remember to consider the source. =) |

 | | WannaBe: Thank you sir!! Message received, and understood! You <ARE> the best. =) |
Feb-20-08 | | fictionist: <tpstar>... I enrolled in Medicine 3 years ago but only finished 1 year due to rising costs and I can't continue it further..sad to say. |
Feb-20-08 | | Jim Bartle: Concerning tpstar's "caution you about sharing medical knowledge on this site": During my time hiking around the mountains of Peru, villagers constantly ask for pills to alleviate a variety of pains and illnesses. They often have a "fixed belief" that these pills cure everything. The advice I've heard is, cold as it sounds, not to give anything, and particularly not to give a bottle of aspirin or a strip of capsules (something for them to take later, in doses). This is because campesinos often don't understand that taking two pills is good, taking the whole bottle is not better. Of course if you have a doctor in your group, that changes everything, and he or she can do some good. |

 | | tpstar: <fictionist> In the US, there are physician extenders (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) who work directly under a doctor but help treat patients or even assist in surgeries. The usual training is two years study followed by an apprenticeship. So if you can't afford medical school, maybe another health care career would be available. <Jim Bartle> That's not quite what I meant. =) See what you think = Tartakower vs Capablanca, 1914 |
Mar-07-08 | | brankat: <tpstar> Mor medical "stuff" from Capablanca page :-) A 1999 New Scientist Magazine article, about how fear can literally damage the heart, mentioned Capablanca. Again, the brain can do this even in the absence of any great fear. The chess master José Raúl Capablanca had a history of hypertension when he died in 1942 at the Manhattan Chess Club of a massive stroke. At his autopsy, the physicians noted numerous haemorrhages in his heart tissue, but no one realised their significance. Last year, Orlando Hernándes-Meilán at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Havana reviewed the autopsy notes and concluded that the stroke damaged his heart by activating the sympathetic nerves.” |

 | | HeMateMe: If you "bust a queenside move" does that mean you are castling long? |
Mar-07-08 | | brankat: Is this a medical question, too? Or a joke :-) |
Mar-09-08 | | fictionist: Thank you <tpstar>. Maybe in the years to come, I might think of pursuing something in the medical field again. As of now, I'm doing what I love next to chess---cooking. :) |
