This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  Stonehenge: Thanks Annie.

I have just sent Lee an email and directed him to chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #29836). I also said that it would be good if he could keep on eye on that forum.

As for my <role in things>, Lee mailed my on Friday if I could call him urgently, so I did. He asked if I, as a prominent member (his words, certainly not mine) could help him with a statement. Of course I agreed.

It's true, if I may be immodest for a moment, that I have worked my arse off for CG for God knows how many years, but I didn't have much contact with Daniel. When it comes to that you are without any doubt by far the most important member here.

Jul-31-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: I'm very sorry to hear about Daniel, Annie. We had a lot of disagreements over the last 2 years or so but we'd cleared things up over the last 6 months, although not as much as I wished we'd had. I'm just very sad about this all because he was so young, very polite and understanding and much loved. No matter mine and Daniel's disagreements I always told him I think he's a <good man> in nearly all of our private correspondence over the years. This is one of those horrible and unexpected things that's made me realise how important life is, he was just far too young. I feel desperately sorry for his wife/Girlfriend and his family and friends. Some people don't have a decent bone in their body, Daniel <wasn't> one of those people. He was a lovely fella, he really loved chess and this site, it's just awful news that still hasn't sunk in. If there's anything I can help you with, financially or otherwise, just say. I've bought a card to send my condolences to the Chessgames address but I don't know <who> to address it to.

I just wish you all the best and I hope his family are okay. X

  Annie K.: Thanks, Mark.
Jul-31-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Who shall I address this card to, Annie? I've got the address but whose name shall I send it to?
Jul-31-18
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: Address in which town?
Jul-31-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Florida. It's a PO address.
Jul-31-18
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: All the relevant towns/cities are in Florida. The recipient's name still depends on which town. Alisa was his girlfriend, so I suppose you can address it to her name, anyway.
Jul-31-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Okay I'll do that. I've wrote half a letter, I'll finish it off and send it to Alisa with the card tomorrow. All the best Annie. I hope you're okay too, I hope you get help until everything's sorted out. X
Jul-31-18  jith1207: Hi Annie, I had never cared about checking how many people have been contributing to the greatness and seamless running of this site. This moment of sober and all the caring comments has made me look up people like you. I just wanted to appreciate for all the time and effort, pray for the strength you need at this time. I was worried about running of this site going forward, but I realize Daniel has left his brain child with some enthusiastic members to carry on this project. This is beautiful, when you know he knows it is in safe hands. I wish you and all members who take up the challenge, all the best. Be strong and cheerful. Thank You.
Aug-01-18  Nisjesram: Was daniel freeman also user <sneaky>?

People are a bit confused.

Thank you

Aug-01-18  twinlark: <Annie K.>

Belated birthday salutations Annie.

Hard to use the word happy with the very sad news of Daniel. All the best to you and others keeping Daniel's work alive.

  Annie K.: <jith> thank you for your obviously very heartfelt post. There are many ways to contribute to this site, and yes, what makes it so special is how much so many people care.

<twinlarks> thanks.

<Nisjesram> if he was, that was his little secret. :(

Sargon's post is quite clear, but the point of uncertainty is whether Sargon is actually aware of the identity of the person who has been posting as Sneaky <on cg>.

Yes, he had worked a great deal on this site with Daniel, but the thing we have to understand is that when programmers work on a site, they are looking at code, not the same user interface that we know. He isn't very familiar with the membership here.

Now, when I read Sneaky's profile, the indications are very strong - and I was quite impressed with <posoo>'s insight about "the Cuban master" being Albert - but Daniel once told me about that time that "5-6 of us used to get together to play chess", so it's also not entirely impossible that he was once known as "Sneaky" elsewhere, but another one of those friends took the username here. I just don't know... we'll have to ask Lee when he starts being a little more communicative here.

Daniel did have other user accounts (nowhere as active as <Sneaky> though), and this was exactly the kind of playfulness he liked to indulge in sometimes... This is one of his accounts: User: Fire on the Beard

Aug-02-18  twinlark: Sneaky has a very large number of posts, over 13,000. I wouldn't have thought Daniel would have had the time.

Anything is possible, and mysteries keep us alert...

  offramp: I think that Sneaky was an account used by a number of people, primarily Daniel.
Aug-03-18
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: <offramp> No, that wouldn't have been like him at all.

<twinlark> Everybody needs to have some fun. And I never believed Daniel <wasn't> posting here - nobody who loves a site and community this much could have resisted participating himself. I just never particularly tried to find out via what accounts he may have done that.

The one thing we know for certain, is that anybody who's been posting here lately has permanently blown his chances to claim that he was one of Daniel's accounts.

  offramp: What's that line from Brownsville Girl? I think this sums up the current situation:

<The only thing we knew about Henry Porter is that his name wasn't Henry Porter.>

Aug-03-18  morfishine: <Annie K.> I hope you are bearing up well. This has been a terrible week. Do you know if any information will be released here at <CG> regarding funeral arrangements, viewing, remembrance website created, obituary, etc.? I haven't found a single item yet (after searching South Florida sources all week). Thanks, best, morf

  Annie K.: <morfishine> thanks. I spoke with Alisa at length yesterday, she is starting to assemble everybody involved now. Daniel's mother, Susan, should be visiting her today. I haven't asked about funeral details (I'll try to remember to ask her later); she did say she didn't have autopsy results yet.
Aug-03-18  morfishine: <Annie K.> I've lost a few close friends over the past few years and a wonderful thing is when the family creates a remembrance website. I hope they do that. This would help all the overseas folks who want to post thoughts, eulogies and make donations (but can't travel). Thanks
Aug-03-18
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: That's a good idea, thanks. I suspect the actual funeral is today, Susan lives too far to be visiting often.
Aug-03-18  thegoodanarchist: <SwitchingQuylthulg: <Annie> Happy birthday!>

I try very hard not to make corruptions of user names.

However, I find it impossible to see <SwitchingQuylthulg> and NOT read <Switchy Quilty Thing>

Aug-03-18  thegoodanarchist: Like, you know, you have a heavy quilt for Winter sleeping. And a light quilt for Spring/Autumn sleeping.

At the change of seasons, you have to do the <Switchy Quilty Thing> and switch to a different quilt.
