This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

A-and Bent Larsen read them aloud to him ... or was it Lombardy? How do you read a Tarzan comic out loud anyway?

<Kreegah, says Tarzan.
I'll give you Kreegah, says Jane, unless you stop swinging from those stupid vines and come help with the baby. Did your chimp friends find any more of those absorbent washable diaper leaves in the jungle?>

Michael Moorcock - novelist, fantasy author, occasional member of Hawkwind and all-round good egg - was editor of Tarzan Comics at the age of 16. If he'd been a few years older, we might have had dialog like the above.

<You're Bent, laughed Bobby.
I am indeed, sighed the Great Dane.
And you, he added, are Bobby. So between us we make one crooked policeman, ja? Whaddayamean, snarled Bobby. Any more cryptic Euro-nonsense and I'm off to Pasadena, where the cops are honest as the day is long.>

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> heh

Well, much like <CG.com>, the folks at youtube really are expert with the code, despite the fact that their customer satisfaction seems to be close to zero.

I had a major "glitch" recently which I researched extensively-

Ok for the last two weeks the view rate for my main channel suddenly shot up dramatically. About 400% in fact. So, having a gigantic ego, I was thinking "aroo maybe my channel will go viral".

However, something more sinister was afoot.

This is the actual story as best I can piece it together. Youtube froze my view count two days ago.

That's when I started looking in to it.

You know those "spam friend invites" you get on youtube?

Don't click on them and "accept."

Some of them sign you up for bot code that artificially spams your own channel with fake views of your own videos.

<youtube> has code that detects this automatically.

So it kicked in on my channel- they froze my views- then they knocked off over 5000 of them- then the view counter started working again yesterday, but at exactly the same rate it had been moving for the last year or so.

Around 250 new views per day.

Instead of 1000 views a day, which started happening a few weeks ago like I said.

So I'm actually very happy about this, because I want accurate information about my videos.

I'm seriously thinking of deleting my entire friends list.

I may do so if this happens again, it was rather nerve racking to tell you the truth.

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> "Bent n' Bobby at Bled" was an "arranged marriage" eh?

And a disastrous one. They hated each other's guts.

Bobby was a terrible brat- but he was a teenager. Bent did not behave with anything close to a professional standard.

He was jealous that he wasn't playing in the tournament.

You know what I find irritating? When a great master dies, they canonize him and he is presented as a saint.

Sure Bent is gone and that's a shame- and yes he had a lot of devoted friends. But he also had a lot of people who found him cold, sarcastic, distant, blunt, and rude.

Has enough time passed so we are allowed to talk about this now?

I have a Russian book on <Bled-Zagreb-Belgrade> and the Russians were horrified by Larsen's attitude towards Bobby. They regarded Larsen's treatment of Bobby to be scandalously inappropriate; they couldn't understand it. From the Russian perspective, it seemed like Bent was trying to sabotage Bobby's chances. And the Russkies were no friend to Bobby either- they already thought he was a rude spoiled brat.

I think being assigned to be a second for Bobby would be a thankless job- but Bent was payed well- very well in fact, and he could have said no.

Denmark, especially Copenhagen, is full of cold, sarcastic, distant, blunt, rude people. I love it.

Who'd want a country full of warm, sincere, amiable, touchy-feely evasive types?

  Annie K.: <Jess> ouch! :\

I've always been very picky about accepting friend invites, so I didn't have that problem. Everybody on my friends list is either an actual friend, or at least pretty well-known to me as a bona fide person. I get plenty of friend requests, but if I don't know'em, they get ignored - I don't believe in huge friend lists just for the heck of it.

PS - good news here on all fronts - possibly I could get back to doing things any time now? ;)

jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> that's fantastic! I'm ready to work too, I have many days of vacation ahead now.

Let me know what's up with an EMU, in your time.

I'm still a little annoyed at my current youtube view count status- mainly annoyed that I unwittingly brought it on myself by clicking "accept" to everything.

The youtube program still has a tight lock on my view count and updates- I think it's still sifting through data, because it's frozen again.

I only care about the long run though- accurate view counts in the long run.

Domdaniel: <Jess> I knew they had differences, but I hadn't known that Fischer and Larsen 'hated' one another on an ongoing basis.

Poor Bent. One day he's top board for the Rest of the World, above Bobby, with a string of tournament wins behind him. He's a contender.

Then Spassky brilliantly rips apart his Nimzo-Larsen in 15 moves, and a few months later Fischer whacks him 6-0. That would make anyone bitter.

What's your take, btw, on Bobby's seeming willingness to play 2nd board in that match? Was he sidestepping Spassky for tactical reasons, or expecting Larsen's hubris to be shown up?

Jul-15-11  crawfb5: I have been Fischer-ing for data in old magazines for Jess. Bobby was quoted as saying "I hadn't played in a year and a half and I thought Petrosian would be easier to play than Spassky."
Jul-15-11
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: Yes what <Big> said- and more. Bobby did say that some time after the actual tournament. Here's what happened at the time of the tournament, according to some who were there:

<Larsen> had already announced to the press in Switzerland that he refused to play board 2. So Bobby was aware of this before he arrived in Belgrade.

Two Commies recall the events of the first two days in Belgrade 1970:

<Mark Taimanov>: "When Dr. Euwe... called at Fischer's room, Bobby was lying on the sofa, his head buried in a pillow. And no sooner did Euwe begin his delicate diplomatic mission than Bobby, without even turning his head in the direction of his highly esteemed colleague, muttered that he had no objection to playing on board 2."

<Mikhail Tal>: "The very next day Fischer was cursing out loud about his ridiculous concession, as he put it. He attributed it to travel-wearinenss and, on another occasion, to a religious stupor."

Jul-15-11
Premium Chessgames Member
Annie K.: <craw> well, that settles it - straight from the horsie's mouth, as it were. ;)

<Then Spassky brilliantly rips apart his Nimzo-Larsen in 15 moves, and a few months later Fischer whacks him 6-0. That would make anyone bitter.>

Also, people who are used to poor manners (in themselves or others) tend to badly underestimate the depth of the revulsion that those who had been brought up to believe in "gentlemanly" - i.e., civilized, polite, dignified... - conduct feel toward such brats/trash talkers. This is why they often try to look for other reasons for the animosity these receive, when there is really no point in looking elsewhere - *that's* where the problem is.

AJ, who keeps thinking that his critics must be America-haters, or American liberals / atheists, or people who envy his chess title etc. is another good example of the phenomenon: he truly believes these things, because these are the explanations he came up with when trying to explain to himself the undeniable fact that he is widely disliked, but could not entertain the possibility that the fault might lie in his own behavior.

<Jess> yep, will do. :)

Domdaniel: Heh. I do believe there's a moral there. I think I already noted certain parallels between messrs Fischer and Goldsby, in terms of self-belief if not chess ability. This personality subtype never consciously lies, because whatever they say is self-evidently true.

Add RL and stir, you get Paranoia.

As previously noted, I'm no gentleman. But I could try to act ladylike, if necessary.

- So, what was the story yesterday?

- Oh, I was in a religious stupor.

Today I think you are an angel- I've been fumbling around that youtube help site for a week piecing together information, but never found what you just gave me:

<"Seeing issues with viewcounts across the product. The views aren't being lost, they're just getting stuck in the pipeline (hence AdSense looking normal). Eng is workin' on it now...." –ytPaul, Google Employee 7/14/11>

Not only is this message current- up to date- but unlike all the other threads I looked at- it's from google/youtube itself, not just a fellow member.

I now will name all my children "Cat's Faith" in your honor and the honor of your sister.

If I have two daughters, I will name them "Cat's Faith Thanh" and "Cat's Faith Annie."

Thanks for your comments on my posts on manners.

Actually at the moment I feel uncomfortable a bit because over the last four years I have been rude so many times it's more than a little ridiculous for me to be lecturing my friends.

I just want the end of the last flame war to stay ended that's all.

Sorry to <Dom> and <Annie> if I was too pushy!
