This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

Thanks for those articles. "Education" has indeed been dumbed down shockingly since, and not just in the US, either. :\

I wonder if this may have to do with the fact that, with the rapid progress in so many scientific fields in the last century, there was suddenly so much more to learn that... education systems just gave up, because there's no way to cram all that knowledge into kids anymore, unless we want them to stay in school (and, by corollary, keep them in "minor" status) till they are at least 30? :s

Aug-20-13  visayanbraindoctor: <Annie> I posted this in <twinlark's> forum, but you might be interested in the direct effect that Sun has on mutation and evolution.

Sun fires solar storm directly toward Earth -- at 2 million mph

http://www.nbcnews.com/science/sun-...

The Sun is in the part of its cycle when it is 'flaring' up. When it does, there are immediate effects on Earth as the article above discusses.

Most people see the Sun as a far-away benevolent light-giving patron. In fact the whole solar system, especially the zone inwards from the inner asteroid belt, lies inside its atmosphere. There are several effects on this that I can think of, offhand.

1. Much of the climate changes in Earth's history is caused by the Sun.

2. The amount of radioactivity in the atmosphere and surface soil is directly affected by the Sun. For instance see the wikipedia article on cosmogenic nuclides.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmog...

This in turn has affected the mutation rates of living organisms, and evolution, throughout Earth history.

3. The Earth's own atmospheric composition is probably influenced by the Sun. Many articles I have read talk of atmospheric sputtering by the solar wind as thinning out the atmosphere of Mercury, Venus, and Mars. That's one way to affect a planet's atmosphere, but this does not seem to apply much to Earth.

Earth's mass and gravity are above that of its sister rocky planets, and so it will tend to hold on to its atmosphere. I wonder if the Earth actually captures more solar wind particles than what it loses via solar wind effects. There is no study on this that I can find in the net.

Hydrogen and helium are two elements that theoretically are able to escape the Earth's atmosphere because they are light weight. Indeed, even though helium is constantly being produced by radioactive alpha decay throughout the Earth's interior, very few of it remains in the atmosphere. The same phenomenon must apply more proficiently to the much lighter hydrogen atom and ions. If hydrogen keeps escaping, then logically the Earth should have significantly less water in it than it did billions of years ago. If water is split into hydrogen and oxygen in the thermosphere or upper atmosphere, and if all the hydrogen eventually escapes, the net effect would be constant water loss, and protracted over billions of years, it could have significant consequences. Yet the Earth's water supply seems to have stayed constant over its lifetime. IMO there probably is some kind of equilibrium between water loss and gain. Water is lost via hydrogen escape http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosp.... Water is also probably coming in due to water-containing bolides crashing into the Earth and possibly via direct capture of solar wind articles by the Earth's gravity.

The only articles that I can find on the solar wind introducing particles into the Earth's atmosphere are

1. the ones on the auroras, which are regarded as the effect of solar particles hitting the Earth's atmosphere, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora...

2. albedo neutrons that decay into protons (a naked hydrogen atom stripped of its electron) that populate the inner van Allen radiation belt, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Al...

If the solar wind is introducing particles into our atmosphere, most of it must be hydrogen 73.46%, helium 24.85%, and some oxygen 0.77% and carbon 0.29%. (See Photospheric composition (by mass) in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun)

The helium would merely escape back into space. So would the much lighter hydrogen, but the fact that the Earth's atmosphere has huge amounts of oxygen and the presence of a biosphere that actively takes up hydrogen would probably lead to much of it getting oxidized into heavier water molecules, which cannot escape the Earth's gravity. (In a previous post above, I have cited articles on how hydrogen is recycled back through atmospheric oxidation and capture by hydrogen-eating soil bacteria.)

Aug-20-13  visayanbraindoctor: These Wikipedia articles on primordial radionuclides http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primor... indicates that 200 million years ago when mammals first began evolving in the Triassic, the Earth probably had a significantly higher background radiation level than today. These primordial radionuclides then existed in far greater quantities, progressively increasing as one goes further back in Earth's history. A more radioactive ancient Earth implies a higher mutation rate, and possible higher evolutionary rates.

One thing that might console us in this era of Hiroshimas, Nagasakis, Fukushimas and Chernobyls is that mammals probably have some degree of resistance to radiation if they evolved in a more radioactive Triassic environment.

"Several Different Species of Killer Whales Likely"

http://www.sciencedaily.com/release...

In fact it seems that some new species of whales have been recently 'discovered'.

There are now two species of minke whales.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commo...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antar...

Note that these two are possible new species:

Eden's whale Balaenoptera edeni

Omura's whale – Balaenoptera omurai

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetac...

It's possible that the pygmy blue whale in the Indian Ocean is a separate species.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_...

The beaked whales are another fascinating clade that may actually have more species than recognized, for the reason that almost nothing is known of them. They are rarely if ever seen, and apparently some of the species were recognized only from washed up remains in beaches.

Whales never fail to fascinate me. They have brains as large as humans. If they had hands and a speech apparatus that could articulate words, they might have built structures and civilizations.

And their journey back to the sea is wonderful and awesome.

Aug-22-13  Thanh Phan: <visayanbraindoctor> I think part of it was they had no choice but to endure or flee to one of the non-communist countries during that time, part of it might have been the country was independent for only a short while historically speaking, along with a weekends only form of prayer here or other forms of belief are in name only, no actions or contemplation time set aside,

Part of it is how people are raised, I find a different form of parenting here in Alaska where we moved, and the schooling system is very different right from the start,

Between our sisters kids and other families who moved to here, we find ourselves explaining and teaching our parents values of studying, household activity and also explaining about the different values we find here,

It's not that the values here are good or bad, culturally they find stress during the interactions here, part of being free to do what you want, shouldn't overstep learning about the reasons why people act or react here, along with the value of how to learn, how to apply yourself to what you choose to do with your full attention and a good attitude,

Speaking of cultural shock, some have returned home instead of adapting here, of them who returned home one of our sisters were among them

Aug-23-13  visayanbraindoctor: <Thanh Phan> I am not certain of the long term health of the American economy. Already many of my countrymen and more of my countrywomen in the Philippines have taken up jobs in China, Japan, and a few are in Vietnam. Most of them are female domestic helpers, and the overwhelming number of these DH are Visayans like me. In many of the the southern provinces we literally are in the 4th world.

I am glad you do not seem to have bad feelings about the Philippine's role in the IndoChina war. Filipinos must have killed a lot of your people, and most Filipino soldiers are specifically Visayans (from the Southern islands) and Ilocanos (from the North). For instance, I was shocked to learn that the owner of a local rural bank in my region used to be a bomber pilot in Vietnam; not even he probably knows how many Vietnamese he killed by dropping bombs on them. I hope this sorry episode of the past never repeats.
