This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

<twinlark> aha, ok I will. Can you tell me which was the last audio batch you received and forwarded to Artiom?

Jan-01-14  twinlark: Annie

Hard to say without checking with Artie as I had to zip the files to send them on in a new email, but as far as I can tell, I forwarded 7 batches.

Also the yahoo email account is scuppered, as I tried to reset the password and it kept refusing to accept it, messaging that it needed to be more complex, even though i was using 16 alpha numeric characters in upper and lower with a few odd symbols thrown in.

Try @netspace.net.au with my surname on the front end.

Jan-02-14  MostlyAverageJoe: Annie, you might want to revisit this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMzC...

You're pronouncing the first name as Михаиль but the final sound should be just л as in лампа.

See http://www.forvo.com/word/м&#... or http://www.forvo.com/word/м&#...

Of course, Russian version of his name distorts the original Latvian "Mihails Tāls" which would append the 's' sound to each word as you had it pronounced and would correspond to Russian transliteration of Михаильс Тальс: http://www.forvo.com/word/mihails_t...

Jan-02-14
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: <MAJ> thanks, you are very likely entirely right about that - problem is, I can barely even *hear* the difference in those L sounds, let alone pronounce it... for this reason, I am currently working on replacing all my recordings of Russian players here with authentic Russian pronunciations, contributed by my actual Russian stepfather. Eventually, I will get around to uploading his pronunciations to my YouTube channel too. Meanwhile the audio project here at cg is already much bigger and more precise than what I have on YouTube - you and everybody else are always invited to check it out at http://www.chessgames.com/audio/. :)

Furthermore, if you visit the Player Directory, you will see that some players now have a little loudspeaker icon next to their names. These are players with audio on their pages - Daniel's latest work on the project!

As for the Tal/Tals debate, I've recently discussed this with Jess here: jessicafischerqueen chessforum, and I tend to think she's right, he was too famous as "Tal" to try to change that now.

  jessicafischerqueen: Happy Nude Deer to you too!

And a big thank you for your typically super-organized "update list" on the CAISSAR TOP SECRET NOMINATING PROCESS RULES page.

Without your list, I wouldn't have been able to make a single accurate choice.

Jan-03-14  MarkFinan: Mrs K, good day and happy new year of course 😃.

Okay.. I posted this on the Caissers forum and I'd like your honest opinion please? Do I have valid points here? I realise that by association you're a member of the so called "old guard", a term dreamed up by Tony Palmer. It's in my personal opinion, a tipsyism, lol. But I won't hold that against you 😆. Seriously, you're one of the only regulars that never gets involved or caught up in the crap around here, so I would like to hear what you think? And one more thing. I've started making use of my ignore list because I *genuinely* want to spend more time talking about chess than arguing (if I could put the whole Rogoff page on Iggy I would, because it's religion and politics over there. And it's *fundamental* religion and politics at that!) and making positive contributions to the site. Of course i'll still get into *some* arguments because I'm fiery by nature. I also plan on cutting down the "post parodies", because quality is better than quantity and even my comedic input has been slacking! I don't suffer fools gladly, and that's why certain people just bug me. I'm sure I bug other people too but I'm a big boy and can take fair criticism or someone having a joke at my expense. In fact I encourage it. This site still needs humour. I only have 5 people on my list and I refuse to log out just to see if someone might be saying anything critical towards poor Marky, diddums ;) But. I don't know who it is, I don't wanna *know* what they're saying, hence the ignoring bit!?! but wherever I post lately and return to my forum I notice a ***star*** next to my last comment, so when I go check for a reply... there's nothing there, and I'm guessing it's the same person who keeps posting after me. It's kind of annoying. Well not annoying, maybe that's the wrong word, let's just say Odd, because if it is the same person over and over and they know they're on my ignore list then they should know I can't see what they're saying anyway! I'm not like a certain person who logs out *just to see* what someone on his list said! Anyways, can that be stopped by the admins do you know? The little **stars** that indicate a reply? And the people on my list are little stars in their own way, haha... So, what about this post of mine? What do you think personally? I'm going to ask a few other people too but I thought id start with the only person here that scares me, I joke I joke 😆😆

<MarkFinan: Okay. Mine, so far are nominations only, I see. So. Best game Anand vs Carlsen, 2013

Most helpful <hms123>

Best informed <Karpova>

Best profile <john barleycorn>

Now a sincere question to the man/woman/men/women who are kindly moderating these awards...

Should we not have to give a valid reason as to why we cast each vote and nomination? It eradicates cronyism. It would be nice to know exactly why that person is being nominated. And in the best post category we have to give the specific post, as is the case with best game (or at least some are at least trying to give valid reasons). So can we please have the same for other categories??

And another sincere question although I don't expect an answer here (but it would be nice?). In the case of funniest kibitzer shouldn't one, at the very least of the nominees posts be posted, therefore giving a valid reason for the nomination and/or vote?

Some people win these awards year after year, and whilst *some* like "most helpful" are well deserved, some aren't at all. Can't just keep voting for members of the so called "old guard" or "elite members", otherwise these awards should just be for those so called people, and the name of the awards should be changed! If you want to pat your mate on the back for being helpful or funny, then go and do it, but don't do it when it's a SITE award because this SITE has 200,000 members (I think?). Otherwise you're proving Mr Urcan correct about certain things!

This site is fairly prestigious now, so why not encourage the whole site to nominate and vote by eradicating the blatant cronyism which stops nice, genuine, regular and friendly people from voting, by making the awards prestigious?

I sent someone an email the other day naming the eventual winners of 6 of these awards. Unless someone listens to my sincere suggestions I'm going to be proved right... and that's wrong!

Whether you love me or hate me (or just find me extremely attractive ;))nobody can deny I'm raising valid points here.

The only votes that should be counted should be the votes accompanied with a reason for that vote.

Honestly, if these awards are to be made fair and prestigious then not one single person can deny I've just raised a lot of valid points..>

  Annie K.: <Jess> nice catch. ;) In truth, though, I am very much in favor of the newly implemented rule changes.

<Mark> hey. :) The points you raise have been discussed back, forth, sideways, and diagonally, for years. Search for key word Caissars, and anything else relevant you can think of, you'll find lots of talk. In WannaBe's forum, some in Dom's forum, and quite a bit more right here... and I really haven't the energy to rehash again, but two things:

1. Daniel only took over the Caissars last year, this is the first year he made some changes, and I think these are already very good ones. Give him some time to figure out what, if anything, else, needs improving on. If you have suggestions, mail him about them.

2. IN the Caissars forum, and DURING the Caissars, is not the time or place to hold these arguments. People are trying to enjoy themselves, don't ruin it for them.

Keep things positive, and don't worry about the stars. ;)

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> I like the new rules too. The thing is that it might take a while for punters to grok the changes.

As I mentioned, this makes your trademark updates even more crucial this go-round.

Jan-03-14  MarkFinan: I didn't realise Daniel took over this year, but if the points I've raised this year have been raised back, forth, sideways and even in a circular penetrating motion in previous years, then maybe it's about time someone took notice so they aren't raised again. And of course have fun. Does the bookie take bets on who will win each category ,because I think that's where i'll have my fun! And that's not a bad idea actually.
Jan-03-14
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: <Jess> yes, but in a way the new limit on the nominations and the way I phrased the count, indicating that once past 2, the nominee is already "secured", and doesn't need more support, may actually make things clearer to people than in previous years. It's all a learning process. :)

<Mark> heh! Indeed, but remember those points were not raised <with Daniel>. And now he's doing this himself, I think it's best to let him figure out his own solutions for the most part, because he is really good at it.

And no, the Bookie won't be taking bets, because that would create an obvious conflict of interests. :p
