This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  SwitchingQuylthulg: 'I didn't know we were fighting Spispopyd agents,' Gudga remarked as soon as he felt Ilya had led them safely out of earshot.

'Me neither,' Ilya replied, 'are we?'

'Don't ask me. You're the one who's supposed to be an expert about them.'

'An expert on Spispopydians? Me?'

Gudga gave his brother a puzzled look.

'You, yes. You've been obsessed with them since we were kids. You watched every zurm with them in. You always wanted someone to play them in every game, even the ones where they wouldn't fit. You broke into their headquarters three and a half years ago and said you discovered their evil secret.'

'<What?>'

Gudga grabbed his shoulder and nailed him with his eyes.

'Yes. It <is> you in there, isn't it? Ilya?'

'I have no idea what you're talking about... oh, wait... holy bleeping bleepity <bleep>!'

Ilya had, in fact, broken into the headquarters of Spispopyd Soulholdings plc some three and a half years previously and discovered their evil secret. What he'd never confessed was that he'd subsequently had to pay for a senselessly expensive mind wipe to blank all his Spispopyd-related memories so the nightmares would stop. He now did so; it was better than having Gudga think he was an impostor.

'You did what!?'

'I knowwww... did I ever tell you or anybody else that evil secret?'

'I don't think so. It must have been pretty evil, mind you, if they keep it a secret - considering some of the things they're open about. Where're we headed, anyhow?'

'The kitchen.'

'What, why? You reckon we're going to find mini-bots or intruders in the kitchen?'

'Not really, no. But we might find chocolate in the kitchen.'

'At a time like this, you're looking for <chocolate>? If you get us in more trouble I have half a mind to say I was in coldsleep and it's entirely your fault we didn't activate their clones...'

Ilya gave his brother a Look.

'Look, we could go looking for possibly dangerous mini-bots that might or might not have been disabled by those emps, or we could go looking for Spispopyd agents, or we could go looking for chocolate. You choose.'

Gudga relaxed.

'So it <is> you in there.'

'... well, ok, when you put it this way, chocolate sounds like a definite winner. To the kitchen, then!'

Meanwhile, back at the AI hub, Dad smiled at Mom. 'Works every time!' he remarked. 'Well, by the time we're out of chocolate, they'll never remember to ask just which clones we are. Too bad about the regulars, eh?'

Oct-14-14  visayanbraindoctor: <Annie K.> Thank you for the links. Sooner or later I will get to read them if it's not too hectic hereabouts.

I have been reading some alarming news in the internet on Ebola lately. It seems that once it infects a person, it carries the same kill rate as small pox and Yersinia pestis in the past.

Modern Medicine knows enough to take keep infected people out of their communities quickly and keep them under quarantine. Doesn't sound humane but it will be worse if the disease spreads unchecked. Insight into the microbial nature of infectious diseases beginning in the 1800s IMO also marks the beginning of modern Medicine.

Viral infections are particularly hard to manage for the simple reason that they can't be cured by an antibiotic. One has to manage symptoms and complications (e.g. if an Ebola patient starts bleeding one might give blood transfusions) and and treat secondary bacterial infections (if bacterial pneumonia occurs, one may give antibiotics and bronchodilators), and that's about it. Then wait for the patient's immune system to control and possibly beat the virus.

Oct-18-14  Thanh Phan: <Ebola does not sound like fun.> Nina Pham, one we still remain in contact with, recently expressed her remorse about actually traveling because of her recent activities regarding her possible infection status,

her harbor hopes to not have infected any passengers due to her being 'informed' to be allowed to travel by the cdc as her actual contact with the cdc stated her ability to, noting her being not a possible of infection, and allowing her to visit family via commercial transportation,

She as well as the others who were in contact with an infected paitent contacted the cdc for abilities regarding travel, it was granted despite her knowingly being around an infected Ebola active carrier

  Annie K.: <Thanh> I just read up on Ebola a bit, and it seems it's only contagious via direct contact with bodily fluids, so other than medical personnel, who do get exposed to such while treating a patient, a casual contact could only be infected if the carrier was actually exhibiting symptoms, such as sneezing. I hope your friend isn't infected to start with, but at least if she isn't feeling sick (sneezing/vomiting), she is most likely not contagious.

Oct-20-14  Thanh Phan: <Annie K.> Miss Pham during her continual hospital stay has noted as you, transfer of bodily fluids could and might influence if they contact that disease, even breath with coughing could result in the transmission,

<Symptoms of Ebola include a fever, a headache, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle and joint aches and in some cases bleeding. These appear two to 21 days after exposure to the disease, the CDC said. Even if a person is infected, the virus can only be passed on once symptoms appear. It is transmitted through direct contact with the affected person's bodily fluids. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art... >

Oct-20-14  Thanh Phan: In the critical care unit she appears in, the nurses only ever appear in pairs or teams, so there are one watching the other nurse, every single moment, to make sure they have not acted in a manner other than the guidelines set for them,

her time appears trying in both body and mind, still fear for her yet know she is in one of the best hospitals able to deal with her situation,

Even with the best of everything it seems the Ebola Virus takes so much from their being, it is probably one of the most draining things you can encounter and live through, from what we have witnessed from our encounters online with Nina Pham, the only way any are able to encounter her at this time, for our safety

Oct-24-14  visayanbraindoctor: <Thanh Phan: <Annie K.> Miss Pham during her continual hospital stay has noted as you, transfer of bodily fluids could and might influence if they contact that disease, even breath with coughing could result in the transmission,>

This is alarming. Yersinia pestis or bubonic plague has an airborne form, pneumonic plague, which may have been the basis for its rapid spread once it took hold of an urban population. Epidemics propagated through airborne means (pneumonic plague and the 1918 influenza pandemic) are particularly dangerous.

I do expect that effective vaccines would be developed against Ebola soon.

<Symptoms of Ebola include a fever, a headache, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle and joint aches and in some cases bleeding. These appear two to 21 days after exposure to the disease, the CDC said.>

Sounds like Dengue, which probably is the number one child killer in my locality among viral diseases, except that Ebola carries a higher kill rate.

I recall that my sister, who was a teenager then, once developed a really bad fever. I did a tourniquet test and she apparently tested positive. I insisted she get admitted to a hospital, where it was confirmed she had Dengue. She got well after a week. Most viral infections are self limiting.

I have seen children getting killed by Dengue though. In the worst of cases they begin to bleed, vomiting blood and getting brain hemorrhages. I haven't seen anyone getting killed by Ebola but it could be similar.

Oct-25-14  Thanh Phan: <visayanraindoctor> Be assured that they are taking steps to attempt to find the actual abilities of just how easy or hard it is for others to become infected by being around someone,

The personal protective equipment or PPE they wear when helping others recover are for their assurance that it will not spread, it will not go beyond them,

<Thanh> I think I saw you say somewhere that your friend is in the clear - glad to hear that.

Oct-25-14  Thanh Phan: Great thanks are offered toward your return to the internet, some here appeared worried yet you still appear,

Nina Pham went through the entire regime until she was free of the Ebola virus, it really took much out of her,

She wishes to take several days before returning to work, and yet the moment she is released she had and took a chance to greet the President of the United States,

Thankfully the video available online has not been released, of her time being sick, that is something everyone I heard are going through when enduring the Ebola virus,

I stayed up late so I personally could hear and understand her and her family concerns, that I was able to translate for others was a bonus, not a reason

Oct-27-14  Alien Math: <Annie K.> her recent admission into a hospital means she might still be getting or adjust to her new surroundings, her are being take care of rest assure,

Oct-29-14  visayanbraindoctor: <Thanh Phan> What does your friend say about the origins of Ebola? I know that there is a hypothesis that AIDS came from monkeys in Africa.

Old world monkeys bear close similarities to humans in their anatomy and physiology, and some diseases can criss-cross between these groups. That's why the rhesus monkey is a favorite laboratory subject in the study of human diseases.

Great apes are even more similar to humans, but I guess they are too expensive and inconvenient to be used as a common lab subject. I admit I would feel troubled to see a chimpanzee being infected with a lethal virus in a lab though. They are almost like us humans. I have posted a link to a chimpanzee skull base in this forum; and truth is that I can't distinguish it from a human skull base. Chimp and human skull bases are the same. I have read that our blood is almost the same too, with the same antigen systems (ABO, MN, Rh, etc).

Nov-26-14  Alien Math: Germany drops its longest word: Rindfleischeti...
Germany's longest word - Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübe- rtragungsgesetz - a 63-letter long title of a law regulating the testing of beef, has officially ceased to exist. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...

In theory, a German word can be infinitely long. Unlike in English, an extra concept can simply be added to the existing word indefinitely. Such extended words are sometimes known as Bandwurmwörter - "tapeworm words". In an essay on the Germany language, Mark Twain observed: "Some German words are so long that they have a perspective."
