This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  Annie K.: <I'm inclined to use the proper Rumanian pronunciation of Bucharest you gave- it's close enough to the "normal" English version to be easily recognizable?>

Well, it may be... also introducing it as "București (Bucharest, Romania)" in the caption, would clarify.

Btw, actually "Rumania" isn't authentic either - that's just an outdated <English> way of calling it. It's really 'România' - so the o is correct, and the â is a sound close to the one in the French 'une', though not exactly the same. I'll send you a file for that, too.

OK, I think I'll want to run this list by an actual Russian speaker - so give it some time, but at least we can be more certain that they'll be reliable pronunciations.

<I already know you can do the Eastern European "r" sound so it's natural.>

Heh - well, I should, it's the one they use in Hungarian too! ;)

Just sent you a mail, btw. :)

Which is why I asked!?

Did you notice how often Tryfon uses the ?! symbols together?

I never know what he means by that, but it's not stopping me from copying him?!

Yes thank you- there's lots of time, better to get it right for sure.

I really appreciate this phonetic help- we can make something more authentic than we usually get on English language chess shows.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Islam> in Russia-

Just finding out more "deep background" and it's not surprising that many of the peoples of the Volga and Caspian Sea became Muslim- before the creation of Islam there was regular trade and travel between Persia/Arabia and these regions.

The two civilizations had intimate contact and remained on good terms throughout history, in fact.

This might explain why the "Russian" peoples of this area converted so readily to Islam- and also why the names of people and places are almost all of Persian/Arabic origin.

"Baku" is a Persian word, for example.

  Domdaniel: <Jess> Such delightful commitment to quaint ideas of pronunciation and 'getting it right'. You are star.

At recent tourney, I heard players discuss our old friends, Alec Hyne and Perk. So it goes.

Some of the placenames in your list exist in two (or more) versions. Some changed after the USSR broke up.

Where established 'English' versions as well known (Belgrade for Beograd, Bucharest for Bucuresti [excuse absence of diacritics], etc) then *maybe* the familiar one is best. Where to draw the line, though?

Not when it's simply wrong, like Perk. But is it worth pronouncing Boris as Ba-reese? Even Russians move towards an 'o' sound when speaking English, sometimes anyhoo.

BTW, this old computer has some 'early' emails between us. Who gets to blackmail whom?

Also thanks to you and Annie for sterling fortitude during the *stukach* affair. It sounds better in Russian.

No worries, with <Annie> on board we'll be sure to steer between the Scylla of philistinism and the Charybdis of "just being a pratt."

Peerts I know that one.

But if you could hear Annie say these names you'd understand how much better they sound than "standard English" pronunciation.

Annie maybe send <Dom> a file or two so he can hear?

Old emails? I've got all of them- mainly because they are in cyberspace, and my old hotmail account still exists even though I "deleted it."

I'll have to review our correspondence with my lawyer, <hms123>, before advising who should be the blackmailer and teh blackmailee in our case.

I don't have Nigel's notorious email anymore though. Maybe I deleted it.

Maybe I imagined the whole episode?

You get to see him soon- hopefully he'll be half-cut- I watched a video of him lecturing on chess whilst drinking several snifters of cognac, and he was in fine form, as you may imagine.

  Domdaniel: I use both '!?' and '?!' quite a lot when annotating a game *for myself*, because I know what I mean. Also, they're available so may be employed, which is pretty much my angle on words, too.

But they're ambiguous, so I'm more sparing with them when the notes are for public consumption. I regard ?! as wider than 'dubious' - it includes clever-but-flawed attempts, good tries in bad positions, and even errors that have some intelligent aspect.

'!?' is for basically sound moves that may not be optimal ... maybe a stronger move exists, maybe the one played complicates unnecessarily.

I'm alive!? (a surprising move).

  jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> This may be off-topic, but I'm just listening to a few actual "911 Calls" to the police that report Bigfoot encounters.

Possibly these calls should be reviewed? Which art magazine would be interested I wonder...

"So two feet Momma... Jenni... Jennifer, yes it's raining now we can't hear nothing outside it's kind of scary.. animal control hard to find tracks (to husband in background) - "yes we (cough) got the lights I told her" "uhh not exactly but.."

  Domdaniel: No. Nyet. Absolutely not. I'm trying to get back up to year zero here, softwarewise.

Those of you with orderly, neat, careful lives will never understand this, but:

1. My comp has been wiped clean and given a new operating system. Various odds and ends were installed by the repairer, without discussion. I'm easy. But, for example, I used to have a still-operative Norton antivirus system, now I've got AVG. Which I used to use before anyway, so it's OK.

2. I had no uber-backup of any kind. Yes, I know that's stupid.

3. Take Fritz. It had to be removed. But I can reinstall it, and many document files have survived. But ...

So far I've found:
A disc for Fritz 8.
A box, with code number, for Fritz 10, but no disc.
Most of Chessbase, but no code number.

4. Multiply.

5. I don't keep records of anything. No bits of paper with codewords, no card file boxes segmented into 'taxes', 'jobs', and 'mortal enemies'.

6. I've done all this before.

7. Writing gets lost each time. Maybe part of me gets lost. I may go back to printing stuff out.

8. On the other hand, I had to throw out a mountain of waste paper just to reach the aforementioned comps, discs, DVDs, laptops, etc.

9. Therefore I'm declaring a novelty free zone and will enforce it.

10. I just had to reinstall java. I mean, java??! Somebody is whisking away the urine, right?

Yours, Crok.

  Domdaniel: PS. It may come down to precise phonetic definitions of 'o' and 'a' -- but everyday Russki pronunciation of 'Boris' is more 'ba-reese' than 'bohr-eese' or 'borr-eese'.

eese as in meese, not cheese.

Heh! OK, we'll get back to that once you've un-traumatized a bit. ;)

You do have my commiserations, btw. :(

Norton would have to pay me - and not just a little - if they wanted me to put up with their AV. Not that it's bad, when it works ok - but it has a highly dangerous tendency to sometimes "go bad" in a big way... and take the whole computer down with it. No, thanks. :s

<Writing gets lost> email everything you write - even to yourself, if you don't want it "out there", or to others, as you like - then you have a fairly simply achieved online backup stored at gmail.
