This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

<<<<<<< MAJOR CHESS SITES <<>>>>>>>>>

<< Correspondence chess <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  Annie K.: <Jess> I was writing a post and took a rather long time about it - now I see in a parallel window that you got in some posts meanwhile, but I'm too tired to start over, so here's the post anyway, with just a few additions... :)

<tpstar: <Ooh, that is spooky. :P>>

Maybe, just a little, but it's a good reputation to have. ;)

<Jess> sent you a little birdie. :) I can has Benko next, plz? Other than that, I think I'll leave the rest of the list up to you, just remember to mix them up a little, so we don't get too many Russkis in a row... ;)

Also don't bother with Unzicker for now; I'll want to redo that one, because I think it's a bit off at the end. Thx. ;)

<Switch: <That may not count as interest (and this may not count as your channel)>>

Close enough. ;) Bronstein I can do, if someone will confirm that the name is pronounced as "BRAWN-shtine"...? ;)

but -

<Jess: <<Switch> who is GM Draw?

Do you mean Kramnik?>>

I was going to say the same thing! :D

OK, I'll catch up with the rest tomorrow, cuz now I have to try and reach the bed <before> I fall asleep. ;s

  SwitchingQuylthulg: <who is GM Draw?>

I was just making a random joke based on the expression "grandmaster draw" and Richard's weird pronunciation of the word "draw" as "drah". I expected to hear groans, not mystified queries :)

<variations within a language>

A minor issue soon to be solved forever, as the final and definitive versions are being uploaded!

  Annie K.: <Switch> heh! x2

I think it was the sudden gear shift into a different type of humor that had us confuzzled. Now it's actually very funny! :D

So, can you confirm the Bronstein pronunciation in my previous post? It's the "sh" vs "s" part I'm not really sure about, although I tend to suspect it's "sh".

Oh, yeah, and nice to see that very familiar <OTHER> avvie of yours over at YT. :) Did you know that it's entirely impossible to contact you through it? So here's a PUBLIC <thanks!>, that'll learn ya. ;)

<Jess: <"Ba-REES" Spassky.>>

Yes, we've come to the same conclusion after some reasearch; any Boris to be found in its native Russian-speaking environment is a Ba-REES. When they cross a border into a non-Russian-speaking country, they magically transform into BO-rises. I hope this helps. ;p

OK, I'll send you unverified versions of Voloshin and Tolush-with-middle-name in a day or two (had a little too much ice-cream...), and Lilienthal in Hungarian should be ok, but I'll need some pointers with Flohr. :)

Novotelnov, Benko, and Botvinnik now uploaded.

  SwitchingQuylthulg: <Annie> I can't confirm the pronunciation of Bronstein (though I'm flattered that your way of handling a Soviet Ukrainian name of Yiddish origin - in the middle of a large Jewish population with Vladimir the Tame happily chirping away behind your shoulder - should be asking <me>!)

I always mentally do it with a simple "s" sound but yes, "sh" is probably correct. I'm not 100% sure about the vowel sound either. as Yiddish distinguishes between "ei" and "ai"... you want real help from me, ask something simpler, like Ståhlberg. ;-)

<Did you know that it's entirely impossible to contact you through it?>

You can still write a message and, like, manually input my name, no? ;-)

  SwitchingQuylthulg: <jessicafischerqueen: <Mr. Owls> well met- can you help us on <Stahlberg>?

Sure, I can do Gideon Ståhlberg (with a dreaded imperialistic å).

Gideon Ståhlberg = YEE-deh-awn STAWL-barry

"ee" in "YEE" is the long vowel from "skeet", "sleep" and "Opocenský". "eh" in "deh" is the vowel from "end", of course. "awn" has a short vowel while "STAWL" has a long vowel, this in both cases being the Foltys/Kottnauer vowel that Richard refuses to use for "draw" ;-) The "a" in "barry" is the same as the "a" in "apple" (and the "r" is short, just in case).

  Annie K.: <Switch: <You can still write a message and, like, manually input my name, no? ;-) >>

*wide-eyed look* You mean, <hack> the system?!

Heh. Very good idea, ackshly. Of course I could also message you via a number of other sites if urgently needed, but YT is convenient. :)

I'm pretty sure Yiddish borrows the 'stein' pronunciation directly from German (it *is* largely German-based after all) - so if you know that, you can still help out. :)

Also, Vladimir may be tame, but I don't see him all that often... so I asked you first, particularly since I trust you to tell me whether you actually know the answer or not - as you just did!

OK, since we've got Stahlberg more-or-less clarified, I might as well get him recorded too - one question, is the y at the end meant to represent the same consonant sound as the one in his first name? You'll certainly get to preview that one! ;)

May-16-11  valiant: That was pretty funny! Thanks!

Well, technically the answer is yes. I've always used the 'i' vowel sound instead (so much easier!) and can't really detect the difference, but a real Swede might :-)

  jessicafischerqueen: <myschkin> that's a wonderful audio link- for <Stahlberg>- and it sounds EXACTLY the same as <Mr. Owls'> exhaustive written description.

I suppose that's the advantage of being exhaustive.

Plus actually knowing how to say the name right.

May-16-11
Premium Chessgames Member
  SwitchingQuylthulg: Actually it doesn't sound exactly the same. The voice seems to be saying STAWL BARRY, two words. Of course there's entirely legitimate variation possible with "Ståhlberg", as with so many other names, but STAWL BARRY is new to me. STAWL-BARRY maybe (one word with equal emphasis on both syllables), but STAWL BARRY?

<Annie> I'd say go with the version of Ståhlberg from the beginning of this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OARp...

<myschkin> Thank you VERY much!!!

<Switch> thanks for that video too - very loud and clear pronunciation there. Between all these sources, now I have a pretty good idea, and will upload this very soon, because, as <Jess> just said -

<Jess: <Thanks <Mr. Owls> that is fascinating- I had no idea that's how you'd say <Stahlberg>.>>>

I also find this absolutely fascinating, as I've never heard Swedish before. I like the sound of it, and can't wait to see whether I can reproduce it! :)

I spoke to my mother on the phone yesterday, and she's sticking by her pronunciation.

I informed her of your comment, and she has initiated legal proceedings against you under the auspices of the World Court at the Hague.

However, no cause for alarm- although Canada is signatory to all UN legal instruments, our actual farming village in British Columbia has not signed any UN documents. Or any documents at all, to my knowledge.

They take a dim view of "outsiders" in our village, a term which includes "the police" and "people from Vancouver."

It was a bit like growing up in the movie "Witness" starring Harrison Ford, though I never once spotted any man that good looking in the neighborhood.
