This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

<<<<<<< MAJOR CHESS SITES <<>>>>>>>>>

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

Annie K.: Hi folks, I'm really tired today, so just a couple of quick messages -

<Switch> - ok, thanks, will redo! :)

<Jess> - 1. Love the TOP SECRET idea, definitely count me in! =)

2. We'll be redoing those two videos, as I was just saying to <Switch>... maybe more than once, even ;) ... so meanwhile please keep the rest of the footage/editable version on your comp so you'll only have to replace the audios.

OK, more tomorrow or Friday. :)

jessicafischerqueen: Sounds good <Annie> and take your time, get some rest.

Maybe we should wait till <Switch> signs off on the final audio version before editing final versions of the two videos in question?

I'm very excited about you being excited about the TOP SECRET project.

I found some astounding information already, and it appears to be completely unknown.

This will be similar to an archaeological expedition, except that a University or The Royal Society won't be giving us any money.

  Domdaniel: Hej, Annie.
When I was larnin' Swedish ("jag har en brå våning") it was simple. Eight vowels: a, e, i, o, u, å, and the other two.

'å' isn't exactly the same as the Anglo sound in 'yawn'. The word 'båt', for example, sounds more like the way some Irish folk say 'boat'.

As if that helps. Tak.

May-19-11  dakgootje: Is that 'I have a good story' or something?

I did try to learn some Swedish a few years back, but didn't really immediately fell in love with it. And I realised barely anyone spoke it ;)

Shouldn't be too hard though - fairly familiar to German and Dutch grammatically.

Annie K.: Hi folks! Signing in from a Bar-Mitzvah I am currently attending, because I couldn't stand the "offlineness" anymore - even though I'm actually enjoying it here: the boy is playing the drums himself, and doing a pretty good job of it.

<Dom: <As if that helps. Tak.>>

Hi sweet, nice to see you dropping by! :)

Luckily "that letter" sounds exactly the same as the Hungarian letter ó, when done in a REALLY HEAVY Hungarian accent - so I should get it right, if I manage not to "hold back" on the accent. ;)

OK laterz!

Domdaniel: <dak> - < 'I have a good story' > Very close. It's "I have a good apartment" - an indispensable line for an 18-year-old at Swedish classes in the 1970s.
May-19-11  dakgootje: Haha, ah well, still 4/5 ;)

Have you ever considered moving to Luxembourg? Everyone there is fluent in virtually every language imaginable.

I'll just have to stick to Dutch and English for the time being :(

May-19-11  Everyone: <Everyone there is fluent in virtually every language imaginable.> Geen twijfel mogelijk!
May-19-11  dakgootje: Zij zijn groot en ik is klein! :(
May-19-11

Annie K.: Heh. <dakkie> don't worry, everything over one language is pretty good - inasmuch as the main importance of knowing more than one language is in the understanding that comes with it; that many "logical" linguistic (etymological) connections are not to be taken for granted. :)

<Dom> so, did you make good use of that line? ;)

<Jess: <Plus, looky here, you are needed!

<József Szén>>>

Good job on the accents. :) But I'm not really needed there just now, because they are correct about "sane" - well, not 100%, but that *is* as close as English can get.

On the other hand, maybe I ought to start going around the site and posting links to my already uploaded videos on the player pages of each relevant player? Meh. I never liked advertising. :s

<Maybe we should wait till <Switch> signs off on the final audio version before editing final versions of the two videos in question?>

That would be most sensible indeed, but I can't upload audio alone to YouTube, so for that I'd either need a new Ripway account to upload the audio files to (my current one is frozen due to misuse... and I'm getting pretty tired of their "log in at least once every month or we'll freeze your account" policy, rilly...), or an email address to send the files to. ;)

May-19-11
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> sure I 'll post your audios on the relevant game pages.

Ah yes OK then no problem sending and resending you multiple video takes so <Switch> can hear them. Easy enough to do.

Yesterday I listened to a Hungarian TV announcer pronouncing <Szen's> name and it doesn't sound like "Sane" to me.

Although you're probably right that's the best available English approximation. Luckily, *we* don't have to use an approximation for our work! Ha! That's what is so exciting about your CHESS PRONOUNCING VIDEO CHANNEL (now in color).

I will always defer to your audio files, past present and future, on any and all Hungarian names, for obvious reasons.

You speak Hungarian!

heh

May-19-11
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> ah I didn't read part of your last post properly.

I think it's absolutely key to post your videos on the relevant game pages.

As I said, I'd be happy to do the posting if you don't like advertising- I don't mind advertising (obviously).

However, I won't start doing that unless/until you give me the go ahead.

I can't resist- one time, the first time I ever beat someone rated over 2000 (well ok the only time), I told my father and then said I felt a little silly about bragging about something (chess) that nobody actually cares about.

He told me "Yes, you won't be able to make a living from chess, but don't hide your light under a bushel."

I don't think you should hide your audio files under a bushel either.

People want to know this information. I didn't get where I am today (typing on a chess chat board whilst at work) by speaking for <Switch>, but I bet he'd regard proper pronunciations to be a "must know" item for chess folk.

  jessicafischerqueen: Confession:

I don't actually know what a "bushel" is and I refuse to Google it.

Is it a "small bush"?

If so, wouldn't it more properly be a "bushette"?

May-19-11  TheFocus: A bushel is 4 pecks.

Kiss (peck) your lover twice on each cheek and you have a bushel. Simple.

The phrase "a bushel and a peck" means twice on each cheek and once on the mouth.

Babies will follow, but I am not so sure of the process. This is where <improvisation> and <imagination> go hand in hand.

May-19-11
Premium Chessgames Member
Annie K.: <Jess> Hmm? OK, just in case you're serious -

<What did the big bucket say to the little bucket?

You look a little pail!>

Yes, that's awful, but that's also what a bushel is, in this context, AFAIK. A pail, that is. ;)

<Yesterday I listened to a Hungarian TV announcer pronouncing <Szen's> name and it doesn't sound like "Sane" to me.>

Right, the English word "sane" is pronounced with a diphthong. If one takes just the first half of that diphthong, and double the length of that sound, thus "replacing" the second half, then one gets a much closer approximation.

And yes, if you'd like to take over the advertising department of the pronunciation project, I would appreciate that a lot! :)

  jessicafischerqueen: <The Focus>, <Annie>

Thanks for those interesting, and fiercely competing, definitions of "bushel."

As God is my witness, I've always thought a "bushel" was a sheaf of wheat.

May-20-11  dakgootje: Here in the Nether Regions we traditionally kiss trice on the cheeks [only 2 cheeks though]. We sure do like our kissing.

Good for you guys! Finally a country where old Ed can get some love.

Even his Wikipedia page was bombed.

May-20-11  dakgootje: hahaha, for some reason I can't remember to write that word correctly.

With some words I know I always forget how to write them - so I can avoid those - but I even forget that with thrice.

Ah well, it shouldn't be too big a problem :P

Did you know the age-less version has the meaning of a very short amount of time? Well you probably did. But perhaps I discovered both words around the same time and thus got them well mixed up afterwards ;D
