jessicafischerqueen: Here is the "Immortal Post":

<<Dec-20-02 Kulla Tierchen:> Ghoul, I saw your message only just now. I was away all day on a fool's errand, an eighty-mile round trip for nothing with all those Christmas shoppers. I was directed to what I was informed was an <<<Alekhine sale,>>> only to discover when I arrived that the merchandise offered was from the Eveready Battery Company of Cleveland, Ohio. What a swindle! Even now I am still beside myself with rage! To get to your question, Botvinnik was among the very few, along with Karpov, who had the sviazi to refuse to sign that shameful document. They both knew they were safe from retaliation. Botvinnik with that arrogance of his declared that he did not sign joint letters.>

I wish I had more "sviazi."

Jan-02-11  Benzol: <I wish I had more "sviazi.">

So do I.

:)

Also it's a pity <Ghoul> and <Kulla Tierchen> are no longer with us.

jessicafischerqueen: <Benzol> to be sure- that's quite an exchange on the <Botvinnik> page, replete with a lengthy administrative "intervention."

Since I'm attempting to view every chess game ever played, I keep running in to the "original posters" from 2002-2004 and the groundbreaking work they did.

  SwitchingQuylthulg: Kasparov vs Topalov, 1999

<Mozart72: Each player has 16 pieces to attack or defend, ok?. Now chess is a rather strange game because although white plays against black and viceversa, mathematicaly each contender plays by himself. So, in a game analysis be it opening, middle or endgame, you can calculate the implied or win probability of each player separatly. The basic formula of probability is P = n/N. "n" stands for the number of succesfull pieces played on the chessboard. "N" for the total number of pieces chess has. In this case N is a constant because you will never have more o less than 16 chess pieces win, lose, or draw. They will be on the side of the table. So, substitute n with 16 and N with 16 and you get 1. Substitute n with 15 and N with 16 and you get 0.9375 and so on.>

[...]

<Shams: Having been invited to apply this little scheme to horseracing, I've devised the following chart, which scientifically computes the win probability for each horse in a race, based on the number of legs that horse has.

# of Legs / Win Probability

4 / 100%
3 / 75%
2 / 50%
1 / 25%
0 / 0%

I'm so confident in this chart that I am willing to personally guarantee any wager you might make based on it-- well, based on one line of it only. I'll let you guess which line that is.>
