| Jul-02-12 | | MarkFinan: <OCF> Have you got a chess engine like Fritz or Houdini ? If so, and If you have the time, could you look at a diagram I just posted at my forum (Only one Iv'e ever posted, so you can't miss It) and tell me what the evals are for that position, with white to move? Thanks either way, Its just no-one I speak to here has one that I know of, so any help would be appreciated :) |

|
| Jul-06-12 | | PinnedPiece: <OCF> to <al wazir>: <Have a nice life. I'm done with you.> Here is his original, somewhat cryptic, and rather incendiary post, which with later explanations from <al wazir> showed (by what he wrote anyway) a lack of knowledge of the rules of admittance for legal immigrants: <al wazir: <OhioChessFan: I'm all for immigrants here legally, and working.>
"Legally?" The way El Duque and his brother Livan Hernandez got here? Your hypocrisy is more than a match for my cynicism.> There cannot be a thing wrong with your thoughts, <OCF>, and the argument that was drawn out over several pages had no substance. You are not in charge of making the decisions of who is allowed in and who is not allowed. Why did you write what you did? FIRST AND FOREMOST, VIOLATORS OF THE LAW SHOULD GET NO PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT. That is your point, I think. Where it was hijacked to, is a mystery to me. Like you, I support any skilled, capable person, applying and getting approval to immigrate. In fact, that used to be a primary selection factor. No longer for the U.S., but still for Canada (and Australia btw): Canadian policy brief summary (info 10 yrs old but sets the stage): <Canadian policy has focused on the young, high-skilled immigrant. Roughly 60 percent of those arriving annually in Canada now fall in the category of economic immigrants (Canada 2001f). These include mainly skilled workers and their families and a relatively small business class.5 Skilled-worker immigrants are selected under
a point system that favours individuals with training and experience in skilled occupations, facility in both official languages, youth, and postsecondary education.> U.S. Policy Brief Summary:
<The United States continues to embrace family reunification as the foundation of its immigrant selection process. Approximately 64 percent of the annual legal immigrant flow to that country is composed of family-sponsored applicants (United States 2002a). Family petitions are processed in a priority sequence reflecting the closeness of the relative and allowing certain numerical ceilings based on countries of origin.Only 17 percent (ibid.) of immigrants fall into an economic migrant category. These individuals are mostly sponsored by US employers. Another four percent (ibid.) are selected by a lottery designed to enhance a diversity of origin among US immigrants. A further 16 percent of immigrants are refugees and asylees (inland refugee claimants in the United States are referred to as “asylum seekers” or
“asylees”) and other humanitarian categories (ibid.).> http://www.cdhowe.org/pdf/rekai.pdf
What two millionaire baseball players from Cuba have to do with the original point is a complete mystery. They have cause to emigrate from Cuba based on repression of dissent: http://www.hrw.org/world-report-201... I suspect <al wazir> simply ate some bad lunchmeat leftovers in the fridge. . |

 | | OhioChessFan: I couldn't believe today that he doubled down on the misrepresentation of my position. I was pretty hacked off yesterday and today........whew. And yes, the 2 baseball players was and is a total mystery. I think violators of the law <do> get preferential treatment, per my example of teen vandals, though I don't think I ever made that point per the immigrants. His point, if there is one, had to do with their violating Cuban law (I think). What would we care about that? And your point about repression also enters into it. And if the US allows them into the USA, they are here.......legally. |

|
| Jul-10-12 | | chessmoron: Okay. |
|
Jul-10-12
 | | OhioChessFan: Dortmund Moves Prediction Contest, sponsored by the legendary <chessmoron> and hosted in my forum, is now open. First round begins Friday the 13th. Click on Elvis for details. |
|
Jul-10-12
 | | OhioChessFan: ****Welcome to the Dortmund Moves Prediction Contest**** This contest involves picking a game result (1-0 1/2 or 0-1) and the number of moves in the game. As an example, if in a first round game you think Karjakin with White will defeat Kramnik in 40 moves, your entry would say: Karjakin-Kramnik 1-0 40
While it is a bit more complicated than the game prediction contest hosted by <YouRang> it isn't <that> much more complicated. I think my profile as written by <chessmoron> does a pretty good job explaining how things work. A few odds and ends. I think <chessmoron> does this by hand and mistakes occasionally happen. Let him know, on this forum. Quickly. It really isn't as painful to miss a round as it is in <YouRang> contest. The winners often have rounds they don't score a single point. So don't fret if you miss a round. Pay attention to the matchups and to the tournament strategy. For example, if a player has an insurmountable lead in the last round, you just might expect a very short draw. In general, it's better to be under the number of moves than over because of the scoring system, so keep that in mind. There are a number of other nuances that will occur to you as the tournament progresses. |

An extra minute or two, and twice the chance for fame and fortune. |
