Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Oct-09-12  Jim Bartle: Looking at those game scores, it seemed so strange to see "13-yard field goal" and "15-yard field goal." Then I remembered the goalpost was on the goal line until the early 70s. With the speed of today's players I can't imagine having a big post in the middle of the end zone, no matter how padded.

Agree. Of course it was two big posts smack on the goal line, then two posts set back from the goal line [http://www.tommcmahon.net/2010/12/n... then the tuning fork design in 1967 (thank you, Wikipedia). Another curiosity -- early in the '62 season the Bears lost 49-0 to the Packers (Lombardi mentions this in the book, noting that he hopes defeat no longer hurts Halas as much as it hurts him). Later in the year they beat the Colts 57-0. Hard to believe a team could win and lose by scores like that in the same season. The Bears finished 9-5, third in the Western Conference behind the Packers and the Lions.

The following year, of course, the Bears won Halas his last championship.

Oct-09-12  Jim Bartle: As I think I've mentioned before, there was a huge difference in the scores of the two SF-Chicago games in 1965. The 49ers won the season opener 52-24, after leading 45-3 in the fourth quarter. Then later in the year in Chicago the Bears eked out a win, 61-20.

That was the famous "Gale Sayers six TDs in the mud" game. How in the world did the Bears manage to get Butkus and Sayers with the third and fourth picks? The first two picks were Tucker Frederickson and Ken Willard. Willard was a good player, very popular, on the 49ers, but no Sayers.

Phony Benoni: Hadn't thought about, but this will be the 50th anniversary of that Lions - Packers game. I watched it--and enjoyed it--but didn't realize the significance at the time.

This is one of the iconic photographs in Detroit sports history:

I remember reading that Butkus just got eaten alive in the first game -- of course he was a rookie up against a great QB.

Really sorry I never got to see Butkus or Sayers play.

keypusher: <Phony Benoni> Hard to believe Bart Starr was ever seen again.

I could waste the day at Pro Football Reference -- I often have. Just read a book about the 1972 Dolphins, but it didn't mention the biggest mystery of the season for me -- Earl Morrall scoring on a 31-yard run against the Jets. How on Earth did that happen?

Oct-09-12  Jim Bartle: Funny you refer to Brodie as a "great QB." He was, but it took the 49ers a long time to realize it, or else he developed late.

In the early 60s they wanted to go to the shotgun full time, which was revolutionary back then. So they traded YA Tittle, a great passer but slow-footed. But they didn't give the job to Brodie full time; he had to share it with rookie Billy Kilmer. Then they got absolutely crushed by the Bears and Bill George, so they went back to the T.

Brodie was the first-stringer most of the time through the 60s, but the team drafted George Mira and tried him, and drafted Steve Spurrier. Both were given good chances, Brodie on the bench, but didn't come through. And then Brodie took a step up around 1970 with receivers like Gene Washington and Ted Kwalick.

keypusher: And here it is, at 11:15. Morrall looks surprisingly fleet. #55, John Ebersole, takes a terrible angle and basically cuts off #57, John Little, who looks like he would have caught Morrall otherwise.

Oct-10-12  playground player: <keypusher> Thanks for the anecdote. Now I understand why, years later, when Milt Plum was winding up his career with the NY Giants, Alex Karras said all those derogatory things about him. Some people really know how to carry a grudge.
