I nominate <Once> as the most constructive kibitzer... he really knows how to ado! :-) I nominate The World as the best player...or is that allowed?!! I nominate <Phony Benoni> and <TheFocus> as the best historians... if that's allowed. :-) I nominate <truefriends> for the best analysis. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: I nominate <WannaBe> for Most Constructive, <technical draw> for Best Avatar, <hms123> for Most Helpful, <Domdaniel> for Best Profile and <Annie K.> for Funniest Poster. <The Caissars> Are you sure about Best Analysis? Having computer and computer-aided analysis be ineligible may be a good idea in principle, but unfortunately it's also an open invitation to suspicion and accusations. (Not to mention that much of the most valuable analysis is quite openly computer-aided.) |

 | | OhioChessFan: Similar thoughts, <Switch> but I guess that can wait until a post mortem. I'm glad CG.C took on the job so I can accept their decision. |

Jan-02-13
 | | The Caissars: <SwitchingQuylthulg> You have a good point, the topic of "computer aided analysis" is so very broad that we removed it from the description. Let us simply say: "Computer analysis does not count."
In other words, if somebody posts an overnight run of a position to a depth of 29 ply, with the top moves measured by centipawns, that doesn't count. On the other hand, if somebody chimes in to explain the puzzle of the day, that does count--even if some people accuse them of having Fritz by their side. |
|
Jan-02-13 | | Blunderdome: <"Computer analysis does not count." > Is that in the spirit of the original contest? Not a rhetorical question, I honestly don't know. |

 | | WannaBe: <Blunderdome> When the Award first started many, many moons ago, chess softwares were still 'Regular' and 'Deep' versions. (Where Deep, meant multi-processor CPUs). And there weren't many freely available/downloadable chess engines, either. Now/today, when we have Team vs. Team, or The World vs. GM, the game(s) specifically states, "Engines are allowed" or "Engines are <NOT> allowed". I believe, when <nikolaas> first started the award, the intention (and the technology) at the time, was to recognize the non-computer aided analysis. 3 years ago, it was I who added the Non-Computer requirement to this category. I hope this explanation helps. |

 | | WannaBe: Sometimes, a pun game of the day is funny play on the players name, the opening, or the key piece/move involved, sometimes, it's downright educational, hence. I would like to nominate 'The $10,000 Game' Capablanca vs Tartakower, 1938 as Best/Worst pun. Plus, it's got a player's name correction, a great link to an article that explained the history, plus Mrs. Capa is a cutie. There. |

Jan-02-13 | | gauer: Avatar: (1) nominate < User: Phony Benoni > Username: (2) nominate < User: crafty > because around here, even posting can be can be kibitzers (had to be careful who was chosen here) Helpful: (3) nominate < CG Librarian chessforum > Best post: (4) < Biographer Bistro > by < User: chessgames.com > Funniest poster: (5) nominate < User: Sneaky > Most constructive: (6) nominate < ? > what would "his" page be for the site without a corner for some rest and relaxation? Best profile: (7) nominate < User: RandomVisitor > seemed to be instrumental in guiding the world game, and his games collections or kibitzing that link to that page also made it a nice visit at other times Best analysis: (8) nominate both < User: jimfromprovidence > (for puzzle of day analysis) and < User: RandomVisitor > also ran a computer, but knowing when and where to look at a good novelty or sack - and then run the analytical check against an engine - is alone enough to warrant very good analysis Best game collection: (9) nominate < kevin86's Game Collections > especially for the tactical fun with all the ladies < Game Collection: polygamy or what's an extra Q among friends? > Most informed: (10) nominate < User: WannaBe > Best historian: (11) nominate < User: Benzol > Best/worst puns: (12) nominate < Parent vs Baszanger, 1987 > "Parent Trap" or nominate <
A Pomar-Salamanca vs J Cuadras Avellana, 1974 > "connect four" for <best pun> nominees (no rules against multiple nominations, right?!)
Groan: < Ftacnik vs O Cvitan, 1997 > "can I buy a vowel?" was a pun for a good game, but perhaps not the pun choice of all to try to win <best pun> (of 2012's choice of nominations) - so a nominee for <worst pun> . Does anyone else feel like Pun Voting Booth itself here is on trial for its consistency?! player of year: (13) nominate < Hikaru Nakamura > Disclaimer: nominations might not reflect <my> particular voting style, but at least some selections might add for some voting competition! |

 | | Sneaky: After some consideration I nominate for #4 Best Post <tpstar>'s great post at Tal Memorial (2012) and I quote: <tpstar: <chess offers little in the way of preparing the mind for life's challenges and perils>Completely disagree. Chess is the greatest game ever and an ideal pursuit for children, teaching them about rules, principles, logic, strategy, foresight, planning, stamina, discipline, dedication, preparation, competition, sportsmanship, and making the best of any bad situation. Team play is even better for reinforcing all of the valuable lessons we are supposed to teach our children (fair play and such) while making friends and influencing people. It is a chicken/egg scenario whether smart people choose chess versus chess making people smarter, but it's all good.> |
|
