I just want you to know that I and others have read it and will analyze it and keep an open mind on your ideas. However I will make no comments on it in this (chess) forum because the nature of the subject tends to produce much heated (too much) debate. Thanks, at least my study of German was not wasted.

Let me play you for the last time
It's the last chance to win again.
But I'm broken and I can't win anything.

When I drew you - it's so untrue
I can't even convince myself
When I'm moving, it's the hand of someone else.

Oh, it tears me up
I try to play on but it hurts too much
I try to recall but it's not enough
To make my game OK.

You can't play at hundred-ten
And if you do you lose then.
I still have some chessic feel
But I cannot threaten something real.
Oh, the truth hurts,
Takebacks worse
How can I give any more?
When my Elo's a thousand less
Than before...

alexmagnus: Grrrrr. I have only one hurdle on my way to the diploma (the thesis itself excluding) and I cannot pass this hurdle for 2 years already.... Numerics, the last compulsory subject remaining... at the end of it you have, except of the exam, also to write kind of a work. The first time I failed. The second too, but they were merciful and gave me a chance to do it again (i.e. the same topic, not giving me a third topic as it is usual). Now I'm on doing it again and make very little progress... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I guess I become crazy/mad before I finish numerics..
Jun-23-10  Rolfo: Alex,is numerics short for numerical analysis? If so, I know it is tough. I passed an exam at University in that theme years ago. I know you will make it next time ! Good luck anyway :)

Today chessvibes published an angry open letter of Arkadij Naiditsch about the German Chess Federation. It would have been great comedy if it's not describing the unvarnished truth and bitter reality.

This "dispute" between the German top players and the Federation is probably now officially turned into a war (let's see what the GCF functioneers do about it)... But Naiditsch's reaction is understandable, after Weizsäcker's letter...

alexmagnus: I just made an interesting player profile. For each age, I took the (national) rating of the 100th best player in Germany at this age. So I got a profile of a "phantom player".

He starts playing chess at 8. His first, but not final, peak, is reached at 23. At 29 he beats it, and after a period of stability in 30s he explodes again at 36. <He plays at best between 37 and 47, with absolute peak at 41>. The decline begins at <45>. Even at high age he still sometimes has short improving phases, so f.x. at 66. At 77 he completely breaks, and dies at 85.

Details in the next post.

Aug-09-10  MrMelad: Hi alex, I just read a google translation of your blog.

First, I'd Like to encourage you to keep going, it is very interesting to read objective perspectives in a world of bias...

I'd like to suggest that most of your solutions were offered to the Palestinians by Israel more than once, and was rejected.

By those I mean the return of the refugees to future Palestine (and not to Israel), and also the evacuation of 97% percent of the land occupied in 1967, where the additional 3% would be exchanged with other equivalent land areas.

Those ideas were rejected by the Palestinian leadership time and again, as they want the right of return to Israel itself to change the demographic balance with 4th generation refugees.

Your opinions puts you in the "center-right" from an Israeli political point of view, as most of your opinions are from a "practical" nature.

Except for this somewhat irrational statement (which even the left in Israel doesn't claim anymore)

<Israel must include Hamas in peace talks>

Hamas doesn't recognize Israel, certainly not as a legitimate country. When it will, Israel already stated, it will join the peace process.

The problem with Hamas that it is most and foremost against the peace process itself, and every time in the past 20 years, whenever there was some progress or advancement in the peace process, Hamas took care to <kill it> and reverse the situation.

Hamas is not interested in peace, Hamas is only interested in a Shahid philosophy, meaning to kill as many Israeli Jews as possible, <and to die as much as possible>, all the time maintaining a miserable poor population at hostage, so that its poverty and horrible conditions would encurage ignorance and hate on their part and cause people around the world to support their cause our of pitty.

Not all Palestinians wants to be miserable and live under a fundamentalistic terror rule, but those that speak against it, even the Palestinians that speak against it, are called traitors to Islam and are being executed (!!), and in areas where Hamas doesn't have control (for instance, Ramallah), de facto, there is almost no occupation at all, there is a constant financial growth, there are no travel restrictions and there are cultural bridges being built between the people of Palestine and Israel.

Support the people of Gaza, don't support Hamas. Thank you.

alexmagnus: <Mrmelad> I don't support Hamas (lol, as a Jew with Israeli relatives? That'd be weird, mildly said). It's just that now that they are in power in the Gaza strip, it looks like there is no other way. As long as Gaza's status is not clarified, that is. I mean, any decision concerning Gaza, made between Israel and the official Palestinian authority, is just a worthless piece of paper as long as the PA cannot control Gaza.
Aug-09-10  MrMelad: <I don't support Hamas> I know you don't and I didn't mean to imply otherwise. What I meant to say was that its possible to support the people of Gaza without supporting Hamas, but I guess it was unintended for..

<any decision concerning Gaza, made between Israel and the official Palestinian authority, is just a worthless piece of paper as long as the PA cannot control Gaza.>

100% correct. This is the main reason I'm very pessimistic about any peace process what so ever.

btw, Your imaginary age player profile is interesting. I don't know if its telling us anything about top players, as it might be harder/different to gain those extra points going 2700 and north. Do you have statistics about top 10 and #1 ratings through age?

Also, maybe rating inflation has to be accounted for...

alexmagnus: <100% correct. This is the main reason I'm very pessimistic about any peace process what so ever.>

Someday the conflict has to end. Trying to solve it with war just leads to a "mutual" destruction.

<Also, maybe rating inflation has to be accounted for...>

Here not, as ratings at all ages are taken at the same point in time.

Aug-09-10  MrMelad: <Someday the conflict has to end. Trying to solve it with war just leads to a "mutual" destruction.> I agree completely, however, rational thought has long been forgoten in the middle east. :(

<Here not, as ratings at all ages are taken at the same point in time.> Interesting. I've noticed there are some periods in which the ratings seems to drop or remain about constant, like from ages 23-27 and around 31-35, 41-47, do you think your model predict crisis in life in those periods, as they are close to the "change of prefix" birthday, which is known to cause depretions? :)
