 | | chessgames.com: It sounds like you folk have the idea, and good suggestions as well. One caveat that I forgot to mention: we don't want to go too deep into any opening. Interesting early deviations is what we're striving for. For example LTJ's idea in the Sicilian is OK, because the opening is 6 moves deep, and that's about the limit. Proposing some fancy sacrifice that comes after 8 moves (like the Rice Gambit) is far too specific for our purposes. Maybe in future events we will do something like that, but not for for the first one. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Nemesistic> Of course you can also express yourself on your profile, provided that you abide by the normal posting rules. Might I suggest, that if you really have a lot of stuff to stay on a variety of CG-related subjects, I'm sure you can find somebody with a chessforum who is willing to let you use it as your soapbox. However this chessforum isn't one of them. Finally, don't forget that just about anything is fair game at the The Kibitzer's Café. Nobody is trying to stifle your opinions--we just are being sensibly restrictive in how we use the Chessgames Member Support Forum. |

| Mar-13-12 | | pulsar: <CG> Please allow me to say a little more about your policy regarding automatic kibitzing suspension without the benefit of warning or explanation. First, I perfectly understand your reasoning about not emailing <obviously> spam accounts, that is accounts used for advertising and similar intents, but I don't see why you could not distinguish between regular CG users from them. I think your regular kibitzers/users deserve fair trial/warning/explanation when they are being banned from kibitzing, after all you profess CG to aspire to be a chess community. Personally, I'd be greatly offended if I'm on the receiving end of this kind of kibitzing ban or probation. In the case of nanobrain, and knowing his kibitzing habits, I actually don't know why he is being put on probation now. Nanobrain also wonders. My point really is that while you demand decency from your users, you don't apply it to yourselves. What about basic courtesy and respect to your regular kibitzers? I hope I don't come across as offensive because I don't mean to be. I wish CG, my favorite chess site, the best. Just sharing a thought that perhaps would help improve the community. Thanks! |

 | | Peligroso Patzer: The move table for this game: C S Gokhale vs Bologan, 1999 probably has an incorrect 9th move for Black. It is given as <9. ... Nfxd5>, but it probably should be <9. ... Nh5>. The move in the CG database is <consistent> with what I found in ChessBase, but nevertheless is almost certainly an error for the reasons set forth in several kibitzes on the above-linked page (including one that I posted a few minutes ago). |

| Mar-13-12 | | cro777: <chessgames.com: It would be really great if the Thematic Challenge ends up proving (or disproving) some material point of chess opening theory.> In this respect, Anderssen's Opening <1.a3> (a reversed St. George 1...a6) might be an interesting theme of a <correspondence chess> thematic match. In the first consultation game at Chessgames (2006) Team Black played the St. George Defense and held Team White to a draw. A thematic match 1.a3 would be a sort of rematch as well. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Peligroso Patzer> I switched the move to ...Nh5 as you suggested, but isn't ...Ne8 also a possibility? I guess then it would be harder to explain why it got so homesick so soon. |

 | | chessgames.com: < Congratz on 500 pages! > After deleting an enormously long parade of matebay's grandstanding, singing the highest praise for civil liberties, due process, and protections against tyranny, we're back down to 498. I hope Martin Luther King Jr. forgives us and understands. < matebay > If you continue to use this page frivolously we'll put a stop to it. On the bright side, we can celebrate the 500 page mark all over again. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Penguincw> Two great suggestions, but we're going to decline both of them. Here's why: First the Nimzo <1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4> this is of course a wonderful opening that has led to some of the most exciting struggles in chess history, but it's not CONTENTIOUS. We want people who think that the choice is sound, AND people who think that it's unsound. Maybe back in the days of Tarrasch the notion of giving up the bishop pair voluntarily was seen as a bit nutty, but in 2012 the opening has a 100% solid reputation. Put it this way: if this wasn't a Thematic Challenge at all, people might end up playing the Nimzo anyway! We want to have openings that would be extremely unlikely to be picked on purpose. Now let's talk about the Marshall Attack <1.e4 e5 2.f3 c6 3.b5 a6 4.a4 f6 5.0-0 e7 6.e1 b5 7.b3 0-0 8.c3 d5> This is a much better suggestion. The jury is still out on the soundness of this gambit, it's played at the GM level, it's a genuine point of opening theory debate. But we have one little complaint: it's a little too deep into the opening for our debut game. It might be a great idea for the *next* Thematic Challenge, but for the very first one, we want to stick to controversial openings that come about in the first few moves of the opening, 5 or 6 at the absolute latest. The requirement that the opening is under 6 moves is rather arbitrary, we know, but we want to keep things simple as possible for our first attempt at this. |

As Blackburne says in Blackburne vs Cuthbertson, 1868, <This is a great deviation from the ordinary manner of conducting a Scotch Gambit now, but the game is inserted to show what liberties we used to take with the openings in the sixties.> Those crazy sixties! 4.c3!! What were they smoking? |

Just a minor Bug Report - but my cursor disappears when composing a comment at the HJ Federer page. While not wishing to publicly display my paranoia, I couldn't keep myself from reporting this; it's eery, as it persists now for weeks (months?), and besides that I am considerably slowed down and feeling slightly "uneasy", when I do not see my trusted little cursor friend merrily bobbing up and down. |
|
| Mar-14-12 | | cro777: <chessgames.com: <1.a3> Ehhh, really? So timid. Where are the fireworks?> I was talking about a possible contribution to the opening theory. That is hardly possible in mainstream openings. |

| Mar-14-12 | | Once: The Daddy has to be the king's gambit, especially the bishop's gambit. I've also got a personal fondness for the Urusov gambit. The fantasy variation of the caro kann can be fun.
A left field candidate would be the Dunst - 1. Nc3. Not mainstream by any sense of the word but interesting. |

 | | tpstar: <chessgames.com> I had a great experience with my first order from your Chessgames Store. I placed my order on 2/29, it was shipped on 3/7, and I received everything on 3/13, which was surprising as I paid by check. I like the triple weighted pieces, and those sets with boards and bags will make great prizes. I also bought some medals for our junior tournaments. This will be an ideal way for users to support the site while promoting chess, and a ready source of awards for your future contests. |

When you have a laptop it sometimes happens that you touch your touchpad accidentally. Then the cursor can indeed disappear. There's a handy program, Touchpad Blocker, that you can install if you're using a mouse instead of a touchpad. |
