 | | OhioChessFan: Per <Waitaka> in the first few minutes of voting on the World Game: < Is there some glith on the voting, or is just me? There were more than 10 votes, 4 for one move, 6 for the other. Suddently, all votes were gone, and everything started again.> Several others noticed it too. Were all the votes recorded? |
|
Oct-24-12
 | | chessgames.com: Sorry about that. It was not a bug at all but a panicked overreaction by a confused admin. The good news is that we have all of the removed votes and it will be replaced momentarily. |

| Oct-25-12 | | waustad: If I want to submit numerous games, what is the easiest way for you to deal with them? Is there a specific format that you can feed to a script or anything like that if I can give you a larger file? I now know that I need to run games through something like Sigma Chess to make sure that there are no typos and I'll make sure that nothing is already posted. |

 | | chessgames.com: <waustad: If I want to submit numerous games, what is the easiest way for you to deal with them? Is there a specific format that you can feed to a script or anything like that if I can give you a larger file?> You do know about our PGN Upload Utility, right? Here's a "pro-tip" that the instructions don't tell you about: Although that page implies it is for uploading games on an individual basis, you really can insert more than one PGN into the window. The reason why we don't advertise that feature is that for many users, submitting games one-by-one is the best way to avoid errors. But if you know what you are doing, submitting large chunks of PGN games is the easiest. <I now know that I need to run games through something like Sigma Chess to make sure that there are no typos> That's a great idea. Often we get a game that has some tiny technical mistake, like not disambiguating a move, and the software coldly and silently rejects it. It pains us when we see that happen because usually it means that somebody has fastidiously typed in each move by hand, and then it's all for naught due to one tiny mistake. <and I'll make sure that nothing is already posted.> That part is appreciated but not strictly necessary. If you submit a game we already have it should be rejected as a duplicate. However it's important to note that if there is even a tiny difference--an extra move tacked on the end, a transposition in the opening, etc.--then a new record will be created and a duplicate game will have to resolved later. If you have a slightly different version of a game already in the database, the best course is to file a correction slip on the game in question, but only if you are confident that your version is the correct one. |

 | | Tabanus: <The reason why we don't advertise that feature is that for many users, submitting games one-by-one is the best way to avoid errors.> <cg> Probably some users would like a more detailed explanation below the Example pgn. For example, is EventDate necessary? Do I have to include the Elo? And the ECO? Will I write Gøteborg or Gothenburg, München or Munich? And so on. |
|
Nov-01-12
 | | WannaBe: Elo? No. EventDate? No. ECO? No. Gøteborg or Gothenburg? Londen. München or Munich? Londen. Any (unknown) tags can be ignored e.g.["CommentatorSmartAss: WannaBe"] will be ignored, if the GUI and the program does not know what it is. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <chessgames.com> A note over at the Biographer Bistro: <Naniwazu: CG: On your 'History of the World Chess Championship' page it says:
<In 1948, Alexander Alekhine passed away, and forced the chess world to resolve a novel dilemma: the death of a reigning champion.>Alekhine died in 1946.>
That is right, of course. The reference is to the first sentence under the section, "FIDE World Champipnships", at History of the World Chess Championship. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Phony> Oops! Thanks for that errata. <Tabanus> You are right, those are good questions which our upload page doesn't address. I can answer them here but more helpful would be to update the instructions after all these years. FYI, the ECO is completely irrelevant: no matter what you put there, we will recompute it using our rules (which admittedly are sometimes questionable). You might as well leave the tag out. Also, when it comes to issues regarding "non-Western characters" such as Ø or Ä, please just substitute them in the most Americanized way possible, even at the risk of being incorrect. So it's Mueller not Müller, and Nino not Niño. We do it this way for maximum compatibility, to make the search functions work better, and so forth. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Stonehenge> Our mistake, thanks for pointing that out. In other news, much progress has been made on the Historical Tournament feature. We rolled out a teaser for you all: Berlin (1881). |

 | | Diademas: Realy nice to get historic tournament pages.
Thank you to CG and all the contributors.
Will there come a directory page that makes it easier to find these tournaments? |
|
| Nov-02-12 | | Shams: <admins> Splendid work on the Berlin 1881 tournament page! Thanks a ton for this. |
|
Nov-02-12
 | | chessgames.com: <Will there come a directory page that makes it easier to find these tournaments?> Absolutely. A link to that page will be accessible shortly. Killing two birds with one-stone we intend for this feature to be a good alternative to our horribly cumbersome New Games Page. |
|
| Nov-02-12 | | amadeus: Thanks for the great work, <CG>! |
|
| Nov-03-12 | | gauer: Those tournament pages are really starting to look good! Does the user who created the collection still have to keep it in his collections or does the tid remember the list once it is assigned? There's a couple of different types of crosstables, such as those ordered by round number (which might have occasional use above a table) or by final ranking or team pairings. Also, on the front page of the news, Carlsen's rating high was reported incorrectly. |

See this post from some time ago
<<Does this mean that the tournament collections that exist at present will become redundant?> They may become redundant in the sense that people will be able to go to other pages on the site to get the same information, but understand that these tournament collections are integral to the upcoming plans. In fact, I imagine certain users to be administrators of certain tournaments, in the sense that it will be their game collections that supply us with the tournament information.Just for example: Suppose one day we may want to make a page for the St. Louis tournament of 1904. We'll then turn to <crawfb5> and say "Is your Game Collection: St. Louis 1904 complete and accurate?" And he will probably say "Yes!" and then we're cooking with gas. The software will take data out of his collection to use for the new tournament page. Then suppose there is a game from round 9 that was considered lost to history, but he finds it in an old chess magazine. He can submit it, then add it to his collection, and voila, the tournament page is updated. Only by chopping this project up into bite-sized chunks can we possibly make significant progress. It's going to take a lot of people to make it happen.> |

The software will take data out of his collection to use for the new tournament page.> That much is already implemented, except that it won't be us personally who turn to crawfb5, there is a "nomination" and "voting" system that puts it in the hands of CG Editors. <Then suppose there is a game from round 9 that was considered lost to history, but he finds it in an old chess magazine. He can submit it, then add it to his collection, and voila, the tournament page is updated.> That part sounded good to us then, but upon further considerations we decided against that kind of procedure. Once a tournament page is created, the original tournament owner should be able to modify their collection, or even delete it, without creating side-effects on other pages. After all, some people leave Chessgames or take long breaks, and it would be like herding cats to get every game collection creator to cooperate with fixes. In the hypothetical example, the solution for the missing round 9 would be to simply submit the new game, and if the software is too dumb to put it in the right tournament, you can explain via the comments or a correction-slip that it belongs to the tournament in question. <Also, on the front page of the news, Carlsen's rating high was reported incorrectly.> Oh dear, what a silly typo. Thanks for pointing that out. |
