  kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames

I video annotated a classic Fischer vs Tal game from the Olympiad in 1960:

Fischer vs Tal, 1960

I was just wondering if I could use this photo for my video thumbnail - I would credit Chessgames.com of course

Cheers, K

chessgames.com: <kingscrusher> Honestly we're not sure of the pedigree of that photo. We believe taking it for that purpose falls under "fair use" in the USA. If you agree, then use it as well.

Kudos for putting those nice links on the tournament page.

I have wanted this feature for a long time. I often post such information on the first page of the tournament forum but your links are much, much more convenient.

:-)

Aug-13-13  YouRang: Question: How do you determine the "Notable Tournaments" that show up on a player's page?

I ask because I happened to be looking at Viktor Bologan's page (Viktor Bologan), where the bio section says this:

<The Dortmund [2003] field included World Champion Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, and Peter Leko, among others. In what is widely considered one of the greatest upsets in modern chess, Bologan took first place by a full point. >

And yet, Dortmund 2003 is not listed in Bologan's "Notable Tournaments".

chessgames.com: <YouRang> "Notable Tournaments" at this stage is just a proof-of-concept. It hasn't been refined to the point where it actually figures out which tournaments deserve to be highlighted, it just basically grabs ones where the player had lots of wins without any regard to final placement.

We intend on improving that soon.

  WCC Editing Project: Good evening.

Please look at the GARBAGE on this important games page:

Capablanca vs Tartakower, 1924

I understand what "volunteer" means, and I'm not kvetching about volunteer status.

What I want to say is this: you have a very large number of dedicated people volunteering and working every day to improve your website. In my opinion these efforts are undercut, on a daily basis, by the antics of just one of your members.

Are you, or are you not, going to do something permanent about this problem?

<AJ>.

<AJ> is the problem. His incessant bragging about his web pages and videos on important player and games page is unacceptable to me. It would be unacceptable to begin with, but more so, because it inevitably leads to a fruitless argument that does nothing more than put more GARBAGE all over these important pages.

I speak for myself (JFQ) and no others here.

I understand we are meant to use the "whistle blowing" function, but I have found this process both laborious *and* fruitless.

"Responses" are typically not forthcoming in anything like a timely or proper manner.

Put more frankly, you act less on the whistle blowing than you do to direct kvetching to this forum.

This is one of the principal reasons that people continue, from time to time, to post directly to you here, despite the fact that we know you don't want us to.

Because when we post here in the forum sometimes, yes sometimes, you actually do act in a timely and proper fashion about the GARBAGE this <AJ> is spewing on your (yes, your) games pages and player pages.

Daniel this is ridiculous beyond belief. After all these years.

He has been banned from every other chess website, which is why he continues to base his "operations" here.

And yes, you *can* ban somebody "just for being a jerk."

You own and administer this website. You can do whatever you want with it.

Please consider doing something permanent to solve this problem.

<How about suspending <<<AJ's> >>ability to kibbutz on Player pages or Games pages?>

Why not?

This would be the simplest and most direct way to solve the problem.

I remind you that this is a person who actually "blew the whistle" on YOU to some "better website business" bureau in order to get you involved in some kind of legal hassle.

And then proceeded to brag about doing so.

Forgive me, but your lack of effective action on this issue- for years- is really wearing me out.

Again, I speak only for myself.

Please help your own website.

Please do something about this.

moronovich: Agree with our dear Jessie.
It is garbage.
Aug-15-13  Karpova: Regarding <jess>' comment, let's have a deeper look into that matter:

The first link to <AJ>'s output was posted on October 12, 2003, though the link is now broken.

On November 22, 2004, <AJ> reminds people of that very link.

On June 12, 2006, he posts a new link (still working) as the old one was broken.

On March 2, 2009, he posts the same link again, despite the fact that the earlier one is still working (the fact that there were two different, though almost identical websites of his, is irrelevant as he was unaware of that, see below).

On August 18, 2009, he posts the two links to his game page again, explaining that he didn't know about those two versions existing and how that could happen (?).

On January 18, 2012, it was again time to post the same link again.

So far, the last time he posted the very link was July 30, 2013, and now it fully escalated.

Now that's all from the same game page, and only the first link became defunct. It is probably okay if he posts it once, maybe a 2nd time if the first link is broken but I think that action should really be taken, if it devolves into mere spamming. And, inevitably it seems, <AJ> reaches his goal of making himself the topic on the game page of one of the finest endgames ever (keep in mind, that someone visiting the site is certainly likely to also have a look at this game also and this may well even be his firt impression of <chessgames.com> then).

Another recent case Steinitz vs Von Bardeleben, 1895 which seems to be ripe for <AJ>'s self-advertising and other off-topic discussions.

Aug-15-13  Tomlinsky: Hi CG. Sent you a mail and posted the following information at Frederick Dewhurst Yates.

<The popular rendering of his name as “Frederick Dewhurst Yates” is erroneous. There seems no evidence of any formal, official documents ever calling him “Frederick”, instead “Fred” seems to appear throughout. “Dewhurst” is a spelling mistake now widely copied in the literature.>

chessgames.com: <Please look at the GARBAGE on this important games page> We agree that page (and the other one mentioned) needs to have a thorough cleaning. We've done that before to several other important game pages.
Aug-15-13  YouRang: <cg.com> Ah, thanks for the explanation regarding "Notable Tournament". I suppose that eventually your heuristic should take into account the player's final placement in the tournament and the strength of the other players in the tournment.

You may even want to include a manual override in case some dork comes along and asks "Why isn't this tournament shown for that player?". ;-)

I'm relieved to hear that. For the record, I only made one suggestion in that post:

<How about suspending <<<AJ's> >>ability to kibbutz on Player pages or Games pages?>

I should have written <Player pages *and* Games pages>, because that's what I meant to say.

At any rate, again, I am glad you will consider this option as the final play in the game.
