| Jan-02-17 | | zanzibar: Now I dislike a Nazi as much as the next guy, but wasn't Junge already PotD? Many he had a GotD instead?
Regardless, whatever happened to the photo I submitted to <CG> for his portrait? Seems a good time to ask, especially as we've start a whole new year and all that. |

| Jan-02-17 | | Boomie: <Chessgames.com> Hastings Masters (2016/17) (2016) is showing more than the 6 games which have actually been played. What's with the extra games? |
|
| Jan-02-17 | | zanzibar: Hmmm, <Boomie> did I read that right - you only expect 6 games in total? There's 309 games in <CG>'s current snapshot - fwiw. |
|
| Jan-02-17 | | Boomie: <zanzibar: Hmmm, <Boomie> did I read that right> No (on the off chance you aren't joking).
There are multiple duplicate games in the DB. This has happened before at times but never so many duplicates. For example:
M Hansen vs S P Sethuraman, 2017 M Hansen vs S P Sethuraman, 2016 This one is especially odd given the different years. Perhaps the New Year is causing some problems. |
|
| Jan-02-17 | | zanzibar: <Boomie> ah, needed that piece of info to see what you were talking about. I downloaded the PGN previously, and did a twin check in SCID. But I didn't allow the games to have different years, and so didn't find any twins. Yes, a lack of imagination on my part - but let's face it, Murphy's pretty smart. But you uncounted, when I just redid the twin check there were 47 twins. It looks like an entire round is being duplicated (on first glance - R5). The games have both 12.31 and 01.01 versions, the latter also contain the ELO's. |
|
Jan-03-17
 | | chessgames.com: I think it's fairly obvious what must have happened with the duplicate games. The official site released two copies of some games scores, with one little difference: one version labeled as 2016, the other version labeled as 2017. |
|
Jan-03-17
 | | chessgames.com: Specifically, we received many games with this in the headers: [Date "2016.12.31"]
[EventDate "2016.12.28"]
[Round "5.3"]
when they all should have read this:
[Date "2017.01.01"]
[EventDate "2016.12.28"]
[Round "5.3"]
They have my sympathy. Neglecting to update the Date when a new round begins is an easy mistake to make. So now I have to decide how to delete a large number of games without creating collateral damage. |

From now on, profile abuses will be handled in the sternest possibly way. It indicates not only a disregard for the rules, but a willful effort to bypass them. |

 | | jnpope: There are six Kieseritzky vs H Buckle games on CG, but when I search for "Kieseritzky vs H Buckle" I get no results and Kieseritzky is WRONGLY suggested to be "R K Kieseritsky" (with an S, not a Z). So what is wrong with the CG database search feature? Some type of search index goof or a bug? |

 | | chessgames.com: <So what is wrong with the CG database search feature? Some type of search index goof or a bug?> It's a feature, but in this case it backfired.
First, not everybody understands this, but E-Z Search does not operate exactly like the Advanced Search. The Advanced Search simply searches for what you type in; as an advanced user would want it. EZ Search will try to make guesses and fiddle with your spelling to hone in on the spelling we have in our database. For example, search "Niemzowitsch" will pull up Aron Nimzowitsch and not Schaya Niemzowitsch. Having said that, a long time ago we keyed EZ Search to take any variation of names to "fix them" so that the searcher is taken to the most likely page. If you search for a common name like Mason or Adams it will take a guess at who you want. This includes not only legitimate spelling variations (Nimzowitsch vs Niemzowitsch) but also transliteration issues (Kapow vs Karpov) and even dumb errors (Polger vs Polgar). Back when this was being programmed, in the case of Kieseritzky, the spelling in the database actually was Kieseritsky. Then one day years later somebody must have submitted a correction to fix the name in the database but E-Z Search continued to hone in on the wrong transliteration. So it's not a chronically buggy behavior but a quirk unique to Kieseritzky. It was easily fixed once identified, so thank you for pointing it out. Testing:
search "Kieseritzky"
search "Kieseritsky"
search "Keiseritszki"
It works now no matter how horribly you chop up his name. (If you were actually looking for R K Kieseritsky you'd be forced to use Advanced Search.) |

search "Kieseritsky"
search "Keiseritszki"
It works now no matter how horribly you chop up his name. (If you were actually looking for R K Kieseritsky you'd be forced to use Advanced Search.)> Interesting implementation. Back when I was doing development work for a bookstore chain we had a similar simple search box for our site in the top nav. Just a humble suggestion, but have you ever tried a cascading search? The implementation goes something like this:
Fire off three concurrent searches (we had beefy boxes, this could be implemented in a series): the first is the exact match search, second is the alternate spelling search, and third is the best-guess search. If the exact match set is not zero, return the largest exact match result subset. If there was more than one exact name match populate the "did you mean" links box with the other exact matches for that last name. If there were no other exact matches and the alternate spelling set is non-zero (or a minimum value) populate the "did you mean" link box with the alternates (ranked high to low). So Kieseritsky would return RK and Kieseritzky would return LABF (assuming each was the highest ranking of their spellings). If no exact matches were found then the highest ranking alternate was returned as the result set as "We couldn't find X, did you mean Y", and all other alternates were returned as "did you mean" links. So Keiseritszki would return Kieseritzky as the result set and Kieseritsky as the top alternate link suggestion. If no exacts and alternates were found then we had a complex algo to determine best-guess (a neat wildcarding pattern matching iterative process that would eventually return something). This was returned as "We couldn't find X, did you mean Y" result set (with no suggested links at that point). For CG I'd probably alter the implementation (you are finding people, not selling books). Probably the exact match set flanked with a "did you mean" link set composed of other exact match AND alternates (limited to the top two or three from each sub-group). Ok, enough shop talk for me (I've got more important chess related tasks these days!). |

 | | Richard Taylor: Hi <ChessGames.com> re the Oceania Zonal starting 14th Jan 2017 in Auckland, New Zealand. I'm playing in this and of course a lot of other players! Here is my post on my forum with additions:
I'm playing in the Oceania Zonal. Of course the Tata Steel will take centre stage as this is the season of chess tournaments. Starts (soon) on the 14th Jan goes to the 2oth Jan. Nine rounds. One GM, several IMs and FMs etc and a women's group. Here is a link to it, hopefully some games will be live and there will be PGNs easily available. Relevant links:

OPEN:
http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve... WOMEN'S
http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve... Can you "list" it? I know Tata Steel is on then but it may have some interest to those in Aussie or NZ or any of those relevant Pacific nations and those following international chess tournaments. Thanks if you can. Of course not all games will be worth 'recording' or 'uploading' but I wonder how we judge that....? Regards for the New Year!
[I wont do well I don't think but I will give it a go despite my advanced and declining years.....esp. chesswise...but I aim for 50& or so...] |
