On this post here:
Biographer Bistro (kibitz #21488) <cameosis: does anybody know how long it takes chessgames to respond to a volunteer bio editor application?
i’ve sent them an email on december 6, but have received neither a yes or a no - is the address they list in their »call for editors« correct?»if you are not a chessgames editor but would like to participate in the process, you may volunteer by emailing chess@chessgames.com. please describe your skills and resources as a chess historian, database expert, etc. you must be proficient at the english language.«> ============
I would like to support the application of User: cameosis to be enlisted as a volunteer editor. I am familiar with his excellent record on chess history work at cg.com, and you can be too by reading a selection of his work. You can find, and examine, all of his chess history posts by going to his home page and clicking on the "view more" link: User: cameosis |

 | | Susan Freeman: I second that.
Unfortunately Sargon has blocked the email , in an attempt to * change servers* but I now believe I have access. It is a bit convoluted.
I expect to get in within a few days.
I personally have received nothing from CG since October 20.
I have been requesting access daily
As I said, I am working on it. I have been reassured by Lee that all email is answered. Obviously that is wrong
This current email problem is a new priority. |

 | | Check It Out: <Olga Viewer> I'm sure the functionality of Olga 2 will be great, but unfortunately most of my comments about the layout will be negative. The purple color on the board is ugly, as are the multiple contrasting colors on the pgn table itself. The upper section with the player's photos and details looks kid-like. A more eye-friendly and professional look would be better. |

| Dec-10-20 | | cameosis: <jessicafischerqueen> »it is ridiculous that we are the only database who inserts patronymics into the player names.« would have to say i strongly disagree in that regard. the slavic patronymics are often very helpful when you have a number of players with otherwise identical names. as long as these specific patronymics are treated like western middle names, all will be fine. in regard to others (like iceland, mongolia, kyrgyzstan et al), we’d be left with given names only if we omitted the patronymics and that would really make identifying a player highly uncomfortable and a pain. |

 | | Olga Viewer: <Check It Out:> Thanks for the feedback. I will try to address your issues. <I'm sure the functionality of Olga 2 will be great, but unfortunately ... >
Thanks for your vote on the functionality. This of course is the number one reason for making a new Olga from modern technology. <The purple color on the board is ugly, as are the multiple contrasting colors on the pgn table itself. >
Great. For about 1000th time, I will remind everyone that the colors you see in development will not be the final deploy colors on CG.com. These colors will be chosen by the CG.com team (not myself). Also, because you can change the color of the Board, the controls, and the score, in table or flow mode, all of those colors can fit your preferences. :) Next - <The upper section with the player's photos and details looks kid-like.> But what?!?!?! The original design and discussion for the new header began mid October. On November 4th, I posted the stream showing my initial design and layout here - <https://www.twitch.tv/videos/792355... > Do you mean that the look of it now is kid-like compared to the original design or the design was kid-like as well? I'd like to improve this and I have received 0 feedback about the header. So at this point, it is what it is. I wish I had got some feedback sooner. < A more eye-friendly and professional look would be better.>
Any specific examples? I'm trying to understand what is not professional about this design. The trophy? Side by side comparison with most of the pgn viewers I find online... I much prefer Olga 2. Maybe it will take some time to grow on you? I sure hope so! I just got Olga 2 working in a deployable iframe; so we are nearing ready for deployment on CG.com. |

 | | Check It Out: <OV: For about 1000th time...> Sorry, I didn't see the other 999 times, and this is my first time to look at a demo of the new platform. Those were my initial reactions; I am NOT a good graphic designer so I don't have any specific suggestions. But, my wife is a professional. I'm going to ask her what she thinks without any preface and let you know that feedback in the next day or so. |

| Dec-10-20 | | Z4all: Susan (or others), could I also request you look into Telemus' request as concerns the <CG> zipfile downloads? Once upon a time I used them, extensively, and they're irreplaceable (almost) - given that it's the only real location with <CG> gid's and pid's are exposed for explicit export. |
|
| Dec-10-20 | | Z4all: <OV> just a suggestion - before replying to constructive (or other) criticism, write a response and sleep on it. Then write another one without looking at the previous version. Then compare... (This post is self-referential). |

| Dec-10-20 | | Boomie: <Serenity Sharpe: I’m worse at chess...> Welcome to the monkey house.
There are no easy answers to your question. One great teacher, Yasser Seirawan, recommends note taking. As you play over a game, especially your own games, write down your impressions. This is good practice to start thinking like a chess player. Chess is a big world and it's hard to know where to start. What kind of games do you enjoy? Tactical or positional? Most new players enjoy tactical games. A large number of pros mention Morphy as the soul of tactics. They have all studied this match - Anderssen - Morphy (1858). You may want to go here to ask more questions -
User: Chessbookforum Good luck. |

|
| Dec-11-20 | | cameosis: depends on the definition of »a few«, really.
i do see that my correction slips have basically all been implemented by cg and i know how good my research skills are -- but i’m fine with the decision going either way. |

 | | AylerKupp: <chessgames.com> There seems to be an increasing criticism about the GOTD and its title. The criticism arises for many reasons; for example: (1) The GOTD is not considered to be a good enough game (although there will always be some who will disagree about the quality of the GOTD) but it was selected because of it's supposedly good "pun factor". (2) The pun included in the title for the GOTD is not considered relevant to what occurred in the game, even thought it might intrinsically be clever. (3) The pun is simply bad. Although that's a fine line, if the pun is sufficiently bad, then it's actually "good". Perhaps it's time to abandon the concept of having the GOTD's title be a pun, contain a pun, or having a title for the GOTD at all. Then we could concentrate on the quality of the GOTD and nothing else. And eliminating having a title for a GOTD would obviously save the staff some time to work on other things since they would not have any responsibility to come up with a title for the GOTD, whether it includes a pun or not. |

 | | Susan Freeman: <AylerKupp> I have been saying this for 2 years!
Our dear departed Annie was very pro pun and the tradition of the puns started by Danny. However, Mr Sargon fancies himself as *the punmaster*.
Personally, I do not even see the <puns> frequently, per definition of a pun. This bloated self image is the least of my problems right now. I am picking my battles, so to speak. <The times they are a changin'> to quote Bob Dylan.
But I agree, and it is on my to do list. Nice to have you in my corner. :) |

 | | Susan Freeman: By all accounts Annie is alive and well. I don't think departed Annie came off well. lol
Departed from CG. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <AK>, yeah, I can feel the increasing pressure too. Boy, I hope this site can survive it. On a related note, you could have been part owner a few years back when Alberto Artidiello sold his share. Too bad you didn't pounce. It would have saved all this pressure and trauma and bloodshed. |

Dec-11-20
 | | OhioChessFan: <Susan> count me as one strongly opposed to your position. Daniel's position is all over this forum. He once suggested on this page he was considering a feature whereby our more sensitive members could select to not see the GOTD titles. I think he was serious. Anyway, I admit to being sincerely concerned that the horrific trauma of having to see a below standard pun and/or game will traumatize even more people. I know, I know, apropos of the people who shriek about cancelling after the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue(what, they didn't know about it when they subscribed?), those people can hardly plead ignorance. I mean, they could simply <quit going to the Game of the Day> but that would be a tremendous burden for them. Better to cast aside the founders' wishes for the sake of a few snowflakes. |

NOT EVERY GARFIELD STRIP IS GOOD, OR EVERY PEANUT IS GOOD, OR EVERY FAR SIDE IS GOOD, or EVERY PEARLS BEFORE SWINE IS GOOD. NOT EVERY JOKE A COMEDIAN TELLS IS GOOD.> As F. Gump once said, that's all I have to say about that. Peace. Out. I have more important things in life to worry about and take care of. Like where the heck did I put the TV remote again... |
