AylerKupp: <Susan Freeman> As an example of how bad the situation is getting, just look at the discussion in today's GOTD. Of the 9 posts so far, 8 are about the GOTD's title and pun.

Both the GOTD's title and the desirability that it contain a pun are good goals. But <OhioChessFan>'s suggestion that it could be traumatic for some readers is noted (yes, I think that he was just kidding). But Daniel's suggestioin to make it optional, at least for the Premium Members, is a reasonable one. Who knows, it might increase the sales of Premium Memberships substantially. :-)

Perhaps a simpler alternative, and much easier to implement, is to create an account with the username of <pun>. Then those of us who choose to ignore posts containing the world <pun> could do that by putting user <pun> on our ignore list.

Well, I certainly can't speak for everyone or even us Premium Members but I'm not seeing any ads ever since I became a Premium Member. When in A N Stuart vs H G Wright, 1925 (kibitz #11) I criticized <acapo> about complaining about ads when he is not a Premium Member I wasn't thinking about those of us who support this site financially.

Did you edit your preferences to check the box that says "Do not display 3rd party ads."? If you didn't, try it and see if that solves your problem.

Too bad that she has never kibbitzed. Her posts might be "interesting" although perhaps not compliant with <chessgames.com> posting guidelines.

Thanks for the reminder <AylerKupp> !

But I just ckecked and I have already been using the "Do not disply 3rd perty ads" buttom for a long time. So I dont know what to do further.

AylerKupp: <Susan Freeman> Sorry about that but after I had my morning coffee and I thought about it some more, my suggestion of creating an account for user <pun> and putting him on our ignore list makes no sense since there would not be an user <pun> to filter out. What would probably be more useful is a way to filter out posts that containing the word "pun" in them. After all, as far as I'm concerned, it's the ad nauseum discussion about the merits or lack thereof of the GOTD pun, not the pun itself..

And just think, if <chessgames.com> could allow members to create a list of words that they find objectionable, kind of a "words ignore" list, then each member could filter out posts that they think they may find objectionable. And, if this feature was only available to Premium Member, that could be another po$$ible incentive to become a Premium Member.

Maybe it's browser related, although I'm just guessing here. What OS and browser are you using? I have been using Windows XP for over a decade along with the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browsers that are compatible with 32-bit Windows XP. I have no problem with ads on any of them.

I recently (finally!) bought a new computer for my wife to use and I'm in the process of setting it up. It's running the latest version of Windows 10 and I tried the latest Chrome, Firefox, and Edge and once again I have no problems with ads using any of them.

So, if you're running Windows 10 and either Chrome, Firefox, or Edge browsers, I have no suggestions on what you could try. Sorry.

If one wants to see <Missy> in action, complaining about <Sargon> to <Susan>, we have the exchange:

<<Missy (pleading her case to Susan) ->

He ignores me ... I'm trying to tell him something and he's being mean to me. All I've undergone he thinks he gets his own way and everything. He thinks he can go on his phone, and he thinks he can not spend any time with me.

He pretends he's cleaning the database when you're gone, but he's not really cleaning. And he doesn't even clean. I go into the datacenter with an upload and then he's on his phone!

He says "I'm cleaning."

And I say "No you're not, you're on your phone."

And I... seriously, guys do you believe me?

I'm six! And me own Mother won't let me do an upload!

HOW'S THAT FAIR?!

Why won't you let me?

As for the issue you raise, why should the admins care?

True, but he's not the only one; he's just probably the one that has been running over the dead cat the longest. Besides, I don't like putting posters on my ignore list because occasionally, even often, they do have good points to make and I would hate to miss them. After all, ignorance is not always bliss. Besides, doing that would eliminate many of the laughs I get after reading some of the posts that some of they make. The same argument could be made for me, of course.

AylerKupp: <<OhioChessFan> As for the issue you raise, why should the admins care?>

Well, as I said in a subsequent post, chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #34679), having a feature like a "Word Ignore" list (inhibiting posts from being seen that contain any of the words on a list maintained by the member) that is available only to Premium Members might entice additional members to become Premium Members. And anything that increases Premium Membership and brings in additional revenue for the site should be of interest to at least some of the administrators. After all, this site might be a labor of love for the administrators but it costs money to maintain, and if an insufficient amount of revenue is not coming in for a sufficient amount of time, it will hurt.

Maybe the administrators should solicit ideas from the members as to what features they might with to be added. Then they could select from the list those features that (a) are of sufficient interest, (b) could be implemented with a reasonable amount of effort, and (c) might entice additional members to become Premium Members.

Just a thought. But perhaps I'm just being too idealistic.

  Susan Freeman: Hi everyone
I posted something on the Bistro, and I will post it here. I STILL cannot access the chessgames email. I was up half the night with Lee with no success. I was on Daniel's Chessgames desktop.
Lee assures me he answers all relevant emails.
sigh

My only solution is to set up a new email, without Lee, and a new server. I am extending one of my personal emails for now: suekgpc@hotmail.com
That is the best one for now.

I am sorry about the inconvenience and lack of accountability from our webmaster.

Well said, dear <moro> and I have to add: Why was the grande Speed Chess tournament left on the road? The later matches cannot be found anywhere on CG. I don't care about the GOTD or Olga viewers, I care about present tournaments not being shown at this site.

CG is a great history book, but has become a flawed news magazine.
