 | | Susan Freeman: Re: last night's problem.
Yes, There was an attack on one of our servers. Sargon was calling me at 0200hrs EST, bound by captors, and begging for ransom money at gun point. All is hopefully resolved, yet we do not know the source of the attack. I suspect an old college sports rival of mine, but one never knows. |

 | | MissScarlett: I note it's the birthday of Walter Tevis on Sunday. Might be an idea to make him <POTD>, if these things are not already preordained. |
| Feb-25-21 | | George Wallace: Regarding these DOS attacks, why not use CloudFlare as your CDN, as they provide DDoS protection. You've accessed a site with DDoS protection before, right? When you click to enter the site a message comes up that says something like, "Please wait 5 seconds as we check your browser" and then under that it says "DDoS protection by CloudFlare" Look into CloudFlare. |
| Feb-25-21 | | Z legend 000000001: RE: Cloudflare
Goodness gracious, please don't. |
| Feb-25-21 | | George Wallace: CloudFlare is used by many top sites that have successful DOS protection. No reason not to use it whatsoever. |
| Feb-25-21 | | George Wallace: CloudFlare ranks very high for their DDOS protection. See this article at Tech Radar.
https://www.techradar.com/news/best... Their DDOS mitigation is references in this article from Wired. https://www.wired.com/story/cloudfl... They are the industry standard.
Cheap too. |

| Feb-25-21 | | Z legend 000000011: RE: Cloudflare
<Security and privacy
The hacker group UGNazi attacked Cloudflare partially by exploiting flaws in Google's authentication systems in June 2012, gaining administrative access to Cloudflare and using it to deface 4chan.[35][36] From September 2016 until February 2017, a major Cloudflare bug (nicknamed Cloudbleed) leaked sensitive data, including passwords and authentication tokens, from customer websites by sending extra data in response to web requests.[37] The leaks resulted from a buffer overflow which occurred, according to analysis by Cloudflare, on approximately 1 in every 3,300,000 HTTP requests.[38][39] In May 2017, ProPublica reported that Cloudflare as a matter of policy relays the names and email addresses of persons complaining about hate sites to the sites in question, which has led to the complainants being harassed. Cloudflare's general counsel defended the company's policies by saying it is "base constitutional law that people can face their accusers".[40] In response to the report, Cloudflare updated their abuse reporting process to provide greater control over who is notified of the complaining party.[41] Cloudflare is cited in reports by The Spamhaus Project, an international spam tracking organization, due to high numbers of cybercriminal botnet operations 'hosted' on Cloudflare services.[42] [43] [44] An October 2015 report found that Cloudflare provisioned 40% of SSL certificates used by phishing sites with deceptive domain names resembling those of banks and payment processors.[45] Cloudflare suffered a major outage on July 2, 2019,[46] which rendered more than 12 million websites (80% of all customers) unreachable for 27 minutes.[47] A similar outage occurred on July 17, 2020, causing a similar effect and impacting the same amount of sites.[48][49] Controversies
Cloudflare has faced several controversies over its unwillingness to monitor content distributed via its network[50][51][52][53]—a stance it has defended based on the principle of free speech.[54]> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud...
Funny that someone's hawking a specific service... Look at the TechRadar article with Wayback - it hasn't really been updated since 2018. . |
| Feb-25-21 | | George Wallace: No service is 100% secure, so your post does not prove that Cloudflare is not a great option for DDOS mitigation. Cloudflare is recognized as an industry standard in DDoS mitigation. |
| Feb-26-21 | | Z legend 000000100: Well, I'm sure <Sargon> has this stuff covered, and knows how the various services match up. Maybe it would be best to stick to higher priority matters for improving <CG>, like getting personalized avatars: <<chessgames.com>, did you get my email with my new avatar?> chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #35240) Or noting important <CG> milestones: <
ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND POSTS!!!!
WOW!!!
Think of how amazing that is, that someone actually posted 100,000 times to this site.> chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #35278) Or noting administrative political persecution:
<Nothing was working when <Annie> was here anyway. She spent most of her time chasing down Trump Supporters and banning them from the site, and little time on anything else.> chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #35276) Seems like someone really cares about the site, and knows it inside out. |
| Feb-26-21 | | Sokrates: <Z legend 000000100: ... Seems like someone really cares about the site, and knows it inside out.> You mean <someone> who became a member in November 6 last year? Who sports a bio of clumsy attempts to sport (wildly malplaced) sarcasm? Whose avatar name tributes a dinosaur from the past? Enough of irrelevant noise. Much more interesting is the fact that Mr. Levon Aronian has relocated himself to the U.S. under the sponsorship and support of the honorable Mr. Sinquefield. Sadly, the new government in Armenia didn't acknowledge the genius of their brilliant artist in chess. I hope the magnificent player and distinguished gentleman Aronian finds peace and support in his new country. Caruana has already come to his aid. I salute the great Aronian, a friendly chessplayer of great personal calibre. And I still mourn the loss he suffered by the shocking death of his beloved wife. May this new beginning give him hope and solace. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Today's ppuzzle has reached a new level of difficulty, with no diagram or player names. And it's only Saturday. I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow. Seriously, I note it refers to Game ID# 128615. Since that is only six digits it is an inclmplete Game ID#, so I suspect that all that is required is adding the corret number. |
| Feb-27-21 | | George Wallace: Puzzle of the Day seems like a bridge too far at this point. Perhaps <CG> should just retire that feature. If it's not automated, then what can even be said? |
Feb-27-21
 | | OhioChessFan: Blindfold Puzzle of the Day? Too difficult. |
| Feb-27-21 | | Schwartz: Why is my English always adjusted and messed up? Get your own puppet. |
| Feb-27-21 | | Ybr: <saffuna: I think we should also have a celebration when <big pawn><george wallace> hits fifteen sock puppet accounts.
That would probably break <tolengoy>'s record.> Was that a typo ? Did you mean fifty /50(instead of 15) ? I think he crossed 15 long ago . How many he using presentky - <ohioliberalfan>, <gorge wallace> , <corn pop..> ....perhaps some other too. How many he used when he was banned for two years ? And before his ban , he used so many ..<aunt jemima> and such. I don't know , i have a feeling that he crossed 15 long ago. |

| Mar-01-21 | | thegoodanarchist: <George Wallace: Puzzle of the Day seems like a bridge too far at this point. Perhaps <CG> should just retire that feature.> Ack! The LORD rebuke you! Puzzle of the Day is my 2nd favorite part of this website, after the history of the WC. CG needs to keep POTD! |
| Mar-01-21 | | George Wallace: <tga>, yes, I enjoy POTD too, but if we face the facts, we must admit that it's too difficult for <CG> to handle. It's a recurring problem. Unless POTD is automated, it's never going run smoothly. Automation is key. Someone needs to write a script for this. |
| Mar-01-21 | | Z truth 000000001: Gotta say, that Georgie guy has yet to come up with a good idea for <CG>. Keep it up. |
| Mar-01-21 | | George Wallace: Okay, <Zanzibar> thinks <Automation> is a bad idea. Anyone else against automation? |
Mar-01-21
 | | MissScarlett: <Opening of the Day> is the feature that could be safely retired. Replace with a hologram of <Howard Staunton> welcoming visitors to the site. |
