Feb-05-22 | | Z free or die: RE: <Who has written the most player bios up until now?> Look a couple posts above and you'll see <JFQ> calling out <twinlark>'s work. chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #37400) I also gave him a tip of the hat back in 2017 for his work on contemporary tournaments: chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #27189) (I recommend reading Tiggler's posts too - even back then we had issues with So's page) <twinlark> and <Stonehenge>, just to name a couple, did a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes. (Who else?
And can anybody give me a bit more of the backstory on <Daniel>'s handling of the player bios? Clearly <twinlark> had editing superpowers - outside the usual review of the Bistro voting system we used then (and now - a little)) |

Feb-05-22 | | fabelhaft: Writing bios is hard work also when it isn’t uncredited and unpaid. Some players have great bios, while some great players don’t. Other bios are works in progress, like Vasily Smyslov. But it’s hard work and no surprise that few are doing it, and maybe the bios are not considered one of the more important features of the site. |
|
Feb-05-22 | | TheBirdman33: <Writing Bio's> It remains a labor of love, dedication, and everything else under the sun that appears worth the time and trouble. The satisfaction though by receiving a heart-felt "thank you", a pat on the back, a warm appreciative comment, these can not be replaced by anything, perhaps it may be stimulated somewhat by renumeration. People who volunteer and offer countless hours of their time while upholding the highest of standards deserve the highest of praise. Being nice to each other and giving and receiving helpful and stimulating feedback ought to go a long way in this <devoted> Chess community; biographers might pop up from all kinds of directions. It does take a strong base that is sea-worthy, and its leader must be made of very special material, in order to create and maintain an atmosphere that rewards and validates quality labor. Personally I think the atmosphere is core, right at the center, and guarding that in this day and age is one heck of a challenge. If there is anything that I can do, please let me know, I have a few hours of free time each day-- and let me add that I am not a native english speaker; the <twinlark>s and several others still present, of such pedigree, are a tough act to follow. With quality teamwork though... everything is possible. Clear tasks, practical, basic and simple, are needed, funnily enough similar to the World vs GM games that were played here. ;) |

What a great post. I couldn't agree more, especially with this: <Being nice to each other and giving and receiving helpful and stimulating feedback ought to go a long way in this <<<devoted>>> Chess community; biographers might pop up from all kinds of directions.> |

 | | Susan Freeman: <TheBirdman33> what an eloquent and thoughtful post! Thank you for your generous offer. Do you have any area of special interest? I will get back to you on Monday. I agree we should have assigned tasks. Thank you again.
If English is not your first language your command of it exceeds most of that <pedigree> |

Feb-06-22 | | TheBirdman33: <Jess> Thanks! - that's good to hear... But I realize with many members spending the majority of their waking hours here, we're dealing with people who like to do their thing, and some would even feel embarrassed by praise, perhaps it is true that most of us here are "real-life <isolani>" - I in no way mean this disrespectfully- and may feel uncomfortable with the idea of doing some teamwork in small groups, like two, and need their own space more in order to function and perform. It is rather likely that things remain in their familiar fold, we'll see. Also dealing with different timezones, which can work both positively, and sometimes may be a hindrance. But the influx, weekly, of brand new game loads, dunno what that is in specific numbers, needs to be handled by two very qualified volunteers/employees. Glad at least you and Susan acknowledge some of the thoughts I tried to convey. I'll react to <Susan> in my next post. |
|
Feb-06-22 | | TheBirdman33: Hi <Susan> - I may be available a couple hours a day <assisting> with updating Bio's and Intro's for tournaments, and since I am not experienced in the technical demands (special skills) to do this properly, I may need some guidance/assistence... To what extent I do not know, but I learn quite quickly. If you or someone else could help me get upto some speed with that, that would be very helpful, to start off the right way, with clear directions of what initially likely be short steps, to then expand once I get the hang of it. Just want to give it a proper try! No hurry or anything. <let it marinate> ;) |

 | | Tabanus: <Susan> I think <Bird> here has potential and am willing to help with any questions you may have (the daily update of games/rounds I have very little experience with). I suggest in the Bistro! Two hours a day should suffice, at least for new events, after some practice. |

 | | kingscrusher: Hi Guys
Is it possible as a feature request in the future, that when checking a game collection e.g. Game Collection: 98_A01 Play 1.b3! That each game also indicates how many unique collections it is in (Uniquely named) as well as different unique collections it is in. This is a sort of ingredient of how "notable" a game is. Perhaps this would enhance everyone's interest even more in the collections and for me would build on that core feature. E.g.
Minasian vs Nikolenko, 1991
(A01) Nimzovich-Larsen Attack, 35 moves, 1-0
In 16 uniquely named collections, 16 collections total etc
Cheers, Tryfon |
|
Feb-06-22
 | | kingscrusher: Alternatively to my suggestion - if there are already pre-calculated "Notability scores", if the notability scores for each game could be shown, I think this would be really interesting to help guide people checking out games from a game collection. |

Feb-07-22 | | TheBirdman33: <Susan> I copied this from the bistro, not just because the page there is being flooded atm, but mainly to express my bewilderment to read <Tab>'s suggestion that I might take over from <caisso> and that you suggested tab would mentor me with that (??)--- my posts here were crystal clear as to the volunteer work I might be able to help with. My initial reaction at the Bistro, perhaps superfluously, after the above: <There seems to be a misunderstanding-- I am not after <caisso>'s job, and I realize that the duplicates in the new uploads are the main pressing issue currently, but for that I am not qualified; I <only> volunteered to assist (first learn the ropes) with editing player Bio's and perhaps tournament intro's. (see the member support forum). In my response to <jessicafischerqueen> I advocated to put two very skilled specialists (hired, part-time, preferably assisted by volunteer(s)) in charge of processing and expanding the games database.> |
|
Feb-07-22 | | Z free or die: Yeah, sorry 'bout that <birdman>. <Susan> Can we reopen the <chess librarian> forum so I could post some of my more technical posts over there, instead of the Bistro? . |
|
Feb-07-22
 | | Susan Freeman: <Bird>. That is a total misunderstanding. I understand the scope of your efforts. You mentioned learning the ropes. I suggested <Tab> be your guru. |

Feb-07-22
 | | Susan Freeman: Not replacing anyone |
|
Feb-07-22 | | TheBirdman33: <Susan> This is what <Tab> suggested, to my surprise: <I would feel a lot safer if Caisso was stripped of editor rights. Why not try this new guy the <Birdman> instead, he seems much more promising.> Why was I surprised? What <caisso> is supposed to do, is pretty much a fulltime job, I only have a couple of hours a day, <Tab> should probably have read that. Certainly if <caisso> is/was still in the learning phase with no supervisor/mentor, he was basically running a lost race, it appears to me, now. My suggestion to you is to draw up a site maintenance requirements sheet, do an inventory as to the personnel available, what their skills are, what time they have on offer, and prioritize according to the most pressing issues that need to be tackled. Or assign someone to do that for you. Open a separate forum, e.g. the one with my name, unused as of yet, and members can chime in to get the needed info and data out in the open, well organized, transparent, only to serve this specific purpose. Get the group together and organize them, I think it is a good group, opportunity is knockin'. Break with the recurring patterns of the last few months. This is about all "this new guy <Birdman>" has to say for the moment; my only motivation is to help proper maintenance of this site, that has given so much to "the not so new guy" - and countless others - in the past. |
|
Feb-07-22 | | TheBirdman33: Looks I forgot the :) emoticon
<Z> no need, it is a bistro, and I wasn't complaining at all; btw your skills and knowledge are very impressive to me. |
|
Feb-07-22
 | | Tabanus: <Susan Freeman: Not replacing anyone> ?? Caisso replaced me (who had a full-time job and spent 2 hours a day in CG) on the new event intros and it got worse. Now someone replace Caisso. Simple as that. |
|
Feb-07-22 | | Z free or die: <birdman> thanks for the compliment, there's no question I've learned a lot from my time on <CG>. Quite a bit from those active on the <Bistro>, but from many others as well. Anyways, welcome and bon courage. |

 | | stevemcd87: <TheBirdman33> and <Jean Defuse> are our newest editors and now have the abilty to update bios.
There is an edit form at the bottom of the player and event pages with an < [admin manual]> link that leads to <CHESSGAMES.COM
EDITOR'S GUIDE>.
Our main editors have the ability to review any edits made by any editor at https://www.chessgames.com/nodejs/e... .
Replace "TheBirdman33" from the url with any editor you'd like to review.
This should help us point out any suggestions, if need be.
<<Susan> Can we reopen the <chess librarian> forum so I could post some of my more technical posts over there, instead of the Bistro?>
<Z>, Can you provide examples of technical posts you think deserves its own forum?
I don't mind using my forum for any technical posts.
I could even edit the header to be "Chess Librarian", if you'd like🤷♂️.
We'll be happy to oblige if more users think it'll be beneficial as well |
|
Feb-08-22 | | Z free or die: Hi <stevemcd87>. Well, any of the posts with mention of utf-8 issues, or some of the SCID stuff are technical. Mostly, <CG> used to have the <chess librarian> account open, and there's a lot of historical posts locked away - so I thought we could, er, "kill two birds with one stone". I wouldn't want to use your forum as some of the issues I'd like to discuss (e.g. getting a TCL debugger running) might not be necessarily so interesting to either you or the average <CG> biographer. . |
|
Feb-08-22 | | Z free or die: Ha - here's another technical topic I'd like to discuss. What's the best OCR software out there?
I can tell ya one thing - Adobe Acrobat Pro is, sadly, unadulterated crap. Learned that the hard way. . |

 | | perfidious: <Susan>, <steve> et al: In my occasional forays into the arena of editing, I find myself very much at cross-purposes; my approach, come to the language, is very much a cold-blooded one, not to say ruthlessly objective. As an editor, I propose to report the facts while certainly not allowing my views of those players to enter the reckoning, and avoid altogether weasel words which would colour the bios in any fashion, but which I have observed from time to time. My only agenda is to improve such player pages as I may touch. |
|
Feb-08-22

<Z> Jinx!
I had just read the first line of your post and <Adobe Acrobat Crap> was the first thing that popped into my mind. Years ago I bought that useless program but good luck trying to make sense of the "characters" it spits out, especially if you enter any Russian text into it... I feel they should refund my money eh. |
