As far as <Jean Defuse's> chess history work prior to his promotion, I judge it to have been in the top tier. Countless times he has swooped in on vexing problems I encountered and solved them. I met the <TheBirdman33> the day I joined <cg.com>, and I have no doubt he will make an editor of the highest integrity and quality. He is a man of rare judgment, in every sense of the word. |

 | | perfidious: Speaking of what has <jess> has astutely termed a 'vexing problem', I have found the opening headers to be misleading, and actually clearly incorrect, in innumerable instances. The two which are by far the most common tend to arise when one arrives at positions from fairly common openings such as the Dutch and Closed Sicilian, but which are very often respectively lumped under the headings of A04 and A07 because, particularly in the former instance, the opening move is 1.Nf3. Would it be possible to obtain the sort of access which would enable me to make these changes, assuming, of course, that I have the knowhow once I have got there? I know what I am trying to accomplish but am unsure whether I have the skills in that direction. |

 | | Stonehenge: Very often, after processing games I see stuff like <<(B14) -> WRONG! It's really A15>> I wish CG stopped doing this altogether.
For example it changed B14 to A15 here:
J Rukavina vs A Fernandes, 1981 But when I enter the first nine moves in the OE, it gives two games, one B13 and one B14. Changing it to A15 while processing is ridiculous. |

 | | stevemcd87: <Z>, I'll discuss with the team.
Perhaps we'll look into bringing back the "Chess Librarian", when we get the chance.
It seems like a forum I'd like to be involved with but I'm hesitant because it doesn't seem chess related, last thing we want is another Rogoff page. lol.<Stone> <perfidious> , it seems the module we use to establish our ECO is not working properly, I'll add an input to the editor box for us to update it.
I'd like to test out this->(https://www.npmjs.com/package/chess...) module in the future <Tab> Yes, but the new one will be a one stop shop for editors' edits, it's a work in progress.
I am working on processing over 400 games for Suri Vaibhav.
Soon, you will be able to go to my page and see a report of my processed submissions.

<steve> if you could, please familiarize yourself with SCID's ECO facility, and then let us know how it compares with the npmj package. I trust SCID categorization most of all (I have python packages based on it which I'd share with anyone interested - a good topic for the Librarian forum) |

Feb-08-22 | | Z free or die: RE: <CG librarian> Here's the forum -
CG Librarian chessforum
It was an administration forum in the first place, so I find it a little perplexing that it ever got shut down. Wonder what the rationale was (maybe <Sargon> shut it down in an effort to suppress all the bad memories of handling the corrections?!?) More seriously, a user forum that one would expect to get shut down, but contains a tremendous amount of <CG> history is <switch>'s: User: SwitchingQuylthulg A seminal feature on <CG>, he falls into the <Dom Daniel> category of users whose forum might be deserving of permanent status (which I think should be read-only, fwiw). . |

Feb-08-22 | | Z free or die: RE: technical bug with <Advanced Search> This odd wrinkle is likely due to searching for <De Riviere> - whose surname has two words? Anyways here's the bug, do a search for < Morphy -- De Riviere> games: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... And you get a header listing 18 games (+14 -3 =1), but no games listed. Using De Riviere's pid works just fine though:
https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... . |

Feb-08-22 | | Total Jim: Greetings.
The recent reference to the biography index brings up a couple of points which might be helpful. Lately I've stumbled across a few existing biographies that currently don't have entries listed in the player index. For one example: Humphrey Bogart. A Google search brings up Humphrey Bogart Now it could be debated that Bogey might not fit the standard of an "eminent player" – but Lisa Lane was a two-time US Women's Champion. That's eminent enough to suit me – but for some reason her biography isn't granted a listing in the directory either. A Google search leads to Lisa Lane The reference to "de Riviere" as a two-part name brings to mind the three examples of players named "DE BOER" whose entries seem somehow out of place where they're currently listed on the "B" page. My point is that a "tune up" of the Player Directory might possibly prevent needlessly wasting time in writing a biography which already exists. Plus – an up-to-date directory would obviously make the player database easier to use without having to leave the Chessgames website for a Google search. I hope that this is helpful. Stay safe. Stay well. |

<Total Jim>
Great post brah. I like your member name as well. It clears up any ambiguity that might arise with member <Partial Jim>. I can report that the so called "Player Directory" has been a piece of garbage since I joined this website decades ago. To my knowledge it has never once been properly updated. It should be fixed properly, or deleted.
I never use it. To find *actual* players and their *actual bios* and *actual game lists* just use the ADVANCED SEARCH search box on this page: Chessgames Home Page It's almost as good as Google for finding the player you look for. So if you type "Lane" into the Advanced Search box on the search page, it will show you all the Lanes in our database, including Lisa Lane. These will be *actual* links to *real* player bios with *real* games played by that player. Your post is an excellent reminder. There have been many posts like it, but in more than a decade at this website, I have yet to notice any improvement of the useless "Player Directory". |
|
Feb-09-22 | | Z free or die: I can't help but once more mention that <CG> should actually embrace the <Player Directory> format, and use the FIDE style name(*) of players for both DB and PGN purposes. (*) Surname, Firstname - aka collation(?) order. . |

 | | Dionysius1: Could someone tell me how to underpromote when I'm analysing a game using the engine? When I come up with a variation where a ♙ reaches the 8th or the 1st, it becomes a ♕ automatically and I can't find a way to change it. Thanks. |

 | | kingscrusher: <Dionysius1> On Chessbase, keep the Shift button pressed and Control button pressed, then do the promotion move and it should popup options. On a site like lichess it is either the Control button keep pressed down or the Alt button keep pressed down while doing the promotion. Hope this helps :) |
|
Feb-11-22
 | | MissScarlett: He's talking about <cg.com>. The short answer is that you can't underpromote. Design flaw. |
|
Feb-11-22 | | login:
You are talking about a chess engine - a more rational answer PGN files (via the download button) are just text, any text editor or (in your case) an installed chess GUI (with SF set as default) of your choice is most probably no longer associated with this particular extension. Depending on your operating system look up e.g.
https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-cha... Maybe an update/installation put your machine in zugzwang recently. In case several site's downloads are defunct on your gaming cluster now global security settings for browser/firewall, particularly rules influencing the chessgames (sub)domain could be key. Preemptively check pr0n folders from time to time.

Feb-13-22 | | whiteshark: In case it has not been mentioned yet:
A serious disadvantage of allowing random computer-generated (here meaningless) punctuation (like ?? or !?) within the pgn game notation when uploading new games is that the <COMPUTER MOVE ANALYSIS> tool no longer works because of it. And this could be turned off so easily... |
