<Susan>
<Stephen> will be able to fix this no worrys eh? You are on the problem and you will solve it. |

Jun-08-22 | | Z free or die: <Not "fixed" but I suspect well on the way to being fixed....> Oh <JFQ>.... not exactly "helpful", but I suspect well-intentioned. * * * * *
Maybe <DiscoJew> had it right: (wish I could put the post in, but <CG> is hanging for me!) There's a possibility that a new advertisement framework went in and it's hanging up <CG>. As evidence, I found an error message with this bit: <Paused on exception
ReferenceError: ir_ads_push is not defined> Want more? I can give you more:
<<script>ir_ads_push();</script>
<script>
window.googletag = window.googletag || cmd: [];
var interstitialSlot, staticSlot;
googletag.cmd.push(function() {
interstitialSlot = googletag.defineOutOfPageSlot(
'/21722279357/Interstitial_Tage',
googletag.enums.OutOfPageFormat.INTERSTITIAL);
if (interstitialSlot)
interstitialSlot.addService(googletag.pubads());
googletag.pubads().enableSingle♖equest();
googletag.enableServices();
}
);
</script>
>
Yeah, that bit of code needs ir_ads_push() defined. * * * * *
And when the hell is <CG> going to get a "verbatim" mode for posting things like errant code, or even PGN?!?! |

Jun-08-22 | | Z free or die: <Jun-06-22 DiscoJew: I am sorry... but as a long time member (free member) I can barely use this site now because of the horrible amount of adverts plaguing every other square inch of these pages. Yes, "but" capitalism...BUT, I shall say *shame on chessgames.com for selling out this hard. Nearly unusable now. Very sad day in chessgames history... BYE

Kibitzer's Café (kibitz #297730) A bit prescient. As <DiscoJew> goes, so we all go. . |

<Susan>
Much improved navigating, and I was able to process a new upload so that's good news. However, this concern voiced by <Z> needs to be addressed- in public, please: <There's a possibility that a new advertisement framework went in and it's hanging up <CG>.> |

Yeah, that bit of code needs ir_ads_push() defined.> then it doesn't matter if he purchases a million premium memberships. I remind you that the folks with premium memberships were also affected by the recent code failure which made posting impossible for some time. The posting problems we just experienced had nothing whatsover to do with premium memberships vs. free memberships. Therefore no- PROBLEM NOT SOLVED if <z> buys a membership. |

 | | OhioChessFan: If the site didn't have so many freeloaders, they'd have more $ to pay for more employees and less need for advertisements slowing things down. |

 | | juan31: < cg> < internal server error..........
At least give a probable date of resolution of the problem> |
|
Jun-09-22 | | Z free or die: Lots of Red Herrings....
The central problem isn't the users of <CG> in this particular instance. Susan is funneling more money into the site (e.g. in maintenance and legal fees) than Daniel ever did - and yet the site's performance metrics continue to degrade further and further. Hmmm... Moreover <JFQ> is quite correct - <The posting problems we just experienced had nothing whatsover to do with premium memberships vs. free memberships.Therefore no- PROBLEM NOT SOLVED if <z> buys a membership.> E.g. premium members have been suffering as much as non-premium members by whatever bug is acting out here. * * * * *
Guess <TheFocus> was right - <Never give away for free what someone else will pay you for.> User: TheFocus That includes debugging... but let's not allow the "peanut gallery" (which here includes mgmt) to distract us - let's just ask <steve> if he found the hint useful. I don't guarantee it so, but one never knows, do one?! |
|
Jun-09-22 | | Z free or die: I should have perhaps phrased it as
<which here includes mgmt, and me!> . |

 | | MissScarlett: I don't think <Miss Susan> was tying the server problems to the membership issue, simply responding to <DiscoJew>'s complaints about the number of adverts. If the server problems were in fact connected to a <new advertisement framework> that would be a different matter. Has the number of adverts recently increased for non-premium members? <Miss Susan>'s refrain that User: stevemcd87 is <working on> a problem, I find increasingly less reassuring. |
|
Jun-09-22
 | | moronovich: Same here. |
|
Jun-09-22 | | Z free or die: <MissScarlett: I don't think <Miss Susan> was tying the server problems to the membership issue, simply responding to <DiscoJew>'s complaints about the number of adverts.> I think her post was a pretty zpecific zuggestion aimed at z-truly. Most chess content websites offer some level of services to non-paying visitors. Not too long ago I turned off ad-blocking and went through a bunch of them in an effort to (non-scientifically) compare the ad contents... <CG> was quite the outlier, almost drowning in ads by comparison with all others. Feel free to undertake your own comparative studies... . |
|
Jun-09-22 | | Z free or die: A little more investigation yields a new service introduced on (or about) May 1: https://increaserev.com/ads/ob/tage... This 3rd party site, increaserev.com, serves up the so-called <chessgames.js> script, which contains the oft-missing <ir_ads_push> routine - which in turn is just a wrapper for <default_mcmIRAds_All> that provisionally loads a bunch of ads (maybe via Ajax - I know, details, details). Anyways, increaserev.com is a suspect in my book, based either in UAE or Pakistan(?), and sometimes mentioned as problematic elsewhere on the web. Prior to May 2022 I don't see <CG> using it, though there's a chance I may be mistaken. I doubt very much that <Susan> has the technical chops to follow this stuff, and assume she must be almost entirely dependent on <steven> (or some other adviser?). . |
|
Jun-09-22
 | | Susan Freeman: Sorry, folks. I did not see the connection between the ads and the server issue before. |
