<CheckItOut>
I just read the recent threads and found the operative post now, after reading your post here: chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #38352) <Stonehenge> says he made a mistake in merging player names, and that kibbutzes were lost from one of the player names by accident. I have done exactly the same thing, and I can report that unfortunately there is no such thing as "backfilling" that would allow us to fix the loss of the kibbutzes. I seem to remember that <Steve> may have been able to help on this in the past, but I do not remember the details. Anyways this is what <Stonehenge> told me when I made the same mistake. <Stony> and <mods> subsequently indicated a safer way for us to merge mistakenly made new player pages (ex: Rogoff Rogof) without losing data. Anyways if <Stony> says this is what happened then is what happened end of. If he quits or falls on his sword or is fired, you can pretty much kiss goodbye any remaining quality in the historical database. <Stony> and <Tabanus> are the last two of those volunteers who maintained it, and where is <Tab> btw? If they are both gone you can pretty much count the minutes until cg.com is gone, at least as a viable chess history document. So it's time to ackowledge <Stony> for having the guts to admit this mistake and offer his own hide. For <Susan> to accept this hide would be catastrophic, and tbh I can't see her doing that anyway. It's not her style-- her style is rather to acknowldge help, to trust her own staff, and to give benefit of doubt and second chances. These are among <Susan's> best qualities, and I trust they will help see us through this latest kerfluffle amirite. |

Hmm we don't have an "in-house backfilling capability," at least to my knowledge, but doesn't the <Internet Archive> "Wayback Machine" offer a chance to recover some of the lost <Rogoff> posts? |

<MissScarlett>
chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #38392) Agree, losing <Stony> would be catastrophic. Let's hope cooler heads prevail and it doesn't come to that eh. |

Jun-30-22 | | Alien Math: <Kenneth Rogoff> that was the most unexpected thing to happen and i doubt that it was intentional |

But I think the best solution would to set aside ONE forum, and only one, where the guidelines are not enforced, where anything goes. Call it the Shark Pit or the Snake Pit or something more original. No one who wants to stay out of the fray would have to go there.> Says the guy who cowers on ignore! |

Jun-30-22 | | stone free or die: I liked <Messiah>'s complaint #9 (about SF versioning). I think complaint #10 is minor compared to the fact that R10 and R11 are missing from <CG>. Under <Daniel> there was a definite sense of community, and many contributors. Fate has taken some of them from us, but many others have been driven away by the current management, and the corrosive and toxic factors afflicting the current community, what's left of it. A partial listing of important contributors who have left: <Sargon>, <AnnieK>, <Tabanus>, <Stonehenge>, <twinlark>, <zanzibar>, <SwitchingQuylthulg>, ... (*) Consider it the price of "freedom".
* * * * *
(*) As always, apologies for omissions - this was just off the top of my head. Of course the list above omits <Phony Benoni> and <The Focus> who have recently passed away, and also omits the seminal early contributors who basically retired before the troubles (e.g. suenteus po 147, whose post yesterday truly best encapsulated the old spirit of the <CG> community). |
|
Jun-30-22 | | stone free or die: <JFQ> and <al w> - the old Rogoff posts are certain to still be living in the SQL db on the <CG> server(s). Recovery might take a while, and should certainly be a low priority given the current <CG> state of affairs, but it will be there. Just wondering, do you remember the brouhaha when Daniel died and we thought <CG> might blink off - there was one user who claimed to make a full backup of all posts, intending to post it all on torrent. Does anybody remember who that guy was?

|
Jun-30-22 | | stone free or die: BTW - didn't I make a bounty offer of a nickel for every deleted <bippy> post? Looks like I might owe <stone> quite a chunk of change! . |
|
Jun-30-22 | | nok: I once said Annie left when she realized who she was working with. People who still fork money or selflessly give their time here must have a long hard think about what this place has become. And <Stonehenge>, if you're reading this: you have my respect. |

He knows how this stuff works. You are right though, it doesn't matter. <Stonehenge> has been a very valuable contributor to this site and it looks as though he's off: <just a very disappointed guy
CG is dead until it gets bought by a third party.> User: Stonehenge <If he quits or falls on his sword or is fired, you can pretty much kiss goodbye any remaining quality in the historical database. > That is lamentable, and as I'm sure you saw in the BB: <Tabanus: <Tab> is now doing what PMD did: "renovating the bathroom". He will be absent for a while longer, and perhaps forever.> Biographer Bistro (kibitz #24948) I don't know who PMD is, but renovating bathrooms can take a while. |
