I don't want to add extra work for Steve if there should be a mishap. I am pushing for it.
My patience is , well, non existent. One of my toxic traits. It worked well in a trauma unit though.

MissScarlett: < Just as vigorous exercise tires our bodies, intellectual exertion should drain the brain. What the latest science reveals, however, is that the popular notion of mental exhaustion is too simplistic. The brain continuously slurps up huge amounts of energy for an organ of its size, regardless of whether we are tackling integral calculus or clicking through the week's top 10 LOLcats. Although firing neurons summon extra blood, oxygen and glucose, any local increases in energy consumption are tiny compared with the brain's gluttonous baseline intake.>

This doesn't take into account, of course, the nervous tension that chess players endure which mainfests itself in elevated heart rates for prolonged periods.

There may also be something to the idea that mental strain is an appetite supressant.

I dön't see any pröblem.

Feb-18-23  stone free or die: <<Missy> Why can't the home page support the umlaut?>

There's an issue of compatibility raised here.

The Site for tournaments from the front page should match the Site tag from the PGN. And it's long been agreed to have PGN use only basic <ASCII> characters, i.e. no <UTF-8> or other encodings (<UTF-8> was invented by Ken Thompson in 1992(1)).

So, the general complaint can be avoided by avoiding things like umlauts (ignoring diacritics was invented by the British after all!).

As I've said before, the "standard" PGN is lacking in many departments - character encoding is one of them.

The original PGN standard was drafted way back in 1994, long before it was generally realized that <UTF-8> is the best all around encoding to use. So, way back then, the recommendation was to use basic ASCII, and the <Latin 1> (aka ISO-8859/1) encoding if necessary:

https://ia802908.us.archive.org/26/...

As I've said, the "modern" internet has generally accepted <UTF-8> as the "best" encoding. That is what <beatgiant>'s work concentrated on (I think!). If someone else decided to use <Latin-1> instead then problems can arise.

To avoid such mismatches, and to support the general audience, stick to ASCII, then you're guaranteed maximal compatibility (and fewest problems).

(1) UTF-8, as told by Rob Pike - http://doc.cat-v.org/bell_labs/utf-...
