stevemcd87: <JSLigon: ... So it looks like the site continues to be updated with current games, but the downloadable archives stopped being updated in 2021.>

We are currently working on updating & automating the Zipfile Archive feature. Thanks for bringing this to our attention

Apr-28-23  stone free or die: RE: <CG> maintenance and restoration

Since <CG> is paying some attention to some of these maybe little used but still valuable old features like Zipfiles, could I also mention a couple of others?

1. The <CG> statistics page:

ChessGames.com Statistics Page

I hate to see <HMM> bragging that he has 117k posts when we know he only has ~80k!

2. The auto-linking to <Edward Winter's> chesshistory website via <C.N. #nnnn>.

https://www.chesshistory.com/winter...

This involves some code mapping the CN number to its permanent home. There's a lookup table that needs to be periodically updated.

It's a little complicated, because Winter migrates posts from his homepage to a new permanent page as they accumulate and age out. Since Winter is now semi-retired, this process is much slower than before, but still ongoing.

If you'd like we can discuss it more.

Apr-30-23  optimal play: Hello Chessgames

Thank you for providing the live stream for the world chess championship games and making them available for all members.

Much appreciated.

stevemcd87: <JSLigon> Zipfile Archive is now up-to-date and will be updated in the beginning of every month. Thanks for your patience.

<z> ChessGames.com Statistics Page seems to be accurate.

Re <Opening Explorer>:
We will begin reanalyzing ALL the games in the database soon, not just the newly uploaded games, which will fix OE bugs that were previously mentioned.
The current script, meant for OE updates, takes 1 hour to process ~8k games, which is not ideal for processing ~1.5 million games. For this reason, we are working on an upgrade to be able to process many games concurrently. Afterwards, We will need to create and automate a script that searches for all edited and newly uploaded games to (re)process them for the OE.
We will disable the site for maintenance temporarily before starting the new OE process, at that time we will ask <editors> to hold off on making updates or uploading new games until it has completed.

May-02-23  stone free or die: <steve> - how often is that page updated?

(And can the broken graphics links be fixed?)

May-02-23  stone free or die: Here's a tournament recently added:

Satty Zhuldyz Rapid (2023)

There was also a blitz version in addition to the rapid. Can <CG> please upload that one as well?

petemcd85: < stone free or die: There was also a blitz version>
The blitz tournament was not available on TWIC, I was able to find the tournament's PGN file through chess24. However, the file structure appears disordered due to the timestamps. Give me some time to develop a regularExpression that will allow me to remove the timestamps, without compromising the structure when downloading PGN files from chess24. I do not want to upload any more tournaments with messy pgns.
We are also looking into the SCID you mentioned in the link below.

MissScarlett: What was wrong with it?
May-03-23  stone free or die: I would guess the time control statement needed to be broken into multiple lines.

I still think it could use some more work on that score.

TePe Sigeman & Co Chess (2023)

May-05-23  stone free or die: <pete> in the old days SCID used to have a TCL implementation, allowing one to bulk process games with a script.

My forked version still does. The main version can be invoked in a command-line mode, but not intuitively (and the old tcscid executable has been orphaned).

SCID has a <Strip variations> and <Strip comments> feature in the <Edit> drop-down menu, but it applies to just one game. Handy for interactive running, but not for batch processing.

But conditioning PGN is a well-established task, and I would recommend the following powerful tool for consideration -

<pgn-extract>

https://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/people/st...

Even with all my own home-rolled programs, I have had occasion to use it, and it was well-worth the effort to master the very slight learning curve.

Mr. Barnes has produced a very useful open-source tool for all to use. Complete with instructional videos (see above link).

For your purposes, i.e. stripping comments, the <--no-comment> option seems to fit the bill.

.

May-06-23  stone free or die: I should amend my previous post to mention that the old version of <SCID>, v4.3, has the script executable, and proper documentation, all bundled together for downloading:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/sc...

I would still recommend anyone interested in chess programming and PGN to familiarize themselves with <pgn-extract>.
