 | | Tabanus: <CG> I think you should distinguish between Ivan and Andrej Sokolov in the front page drop-down list. Seaching for Sokolov and Yusupov did not give the desired Andrej result: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che...
https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... (Andrej's games are included, but...) |
|
Jan-15-24 | | stone free or die: <Tab> is right - and the drop down list searches really should be using the player PID. (<Tab> knows all the following, but for the benefit of other readers...) The name searching on <CG> is likely always going to be flawed - especially given that <CG> doesn't force player names to be unique. What to do?
<Daniel> and I resolved this issue about 10 year ago when I encouraged him to adopt using the <CG> player PID on all search fields. If you have a game between the two players, one can mouse over the player name links and see the PID embedded in the url. It's then easy to extract it for use to get unambiguous searches: <Andrei Sokolov> = 11701
<Ivan Sokolov> = 10992
<Artur Yusupov> = 29501 These PID's can be used for the White / Black player fields in an <Advanced Search>, as <tab> showed: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... (Only Ivan Sokolov games are here)
This is unlike an <Advanced Search>, which even if the full name (Andrei Sokolov) is given, also returns Ivan games: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... (Note this game is also returned:
Yusupov vs A V Kharitonov, 1978) Using double quotes <"Andrei Sokolov"> doesn't help. * * * * *
Note - if you have a game between two players there's usually a <<##> more <player_1>/<player_2> games> link in a box at the bottom of the moves. That uses the PID's to search for more player games, e.g. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... . |

I think GM Mishra's last FIDE rating is incorrect: Abhimanyu Mishra "Last FIDE rating: 2342 (1682 blitz)"
On the FIDE website it indicates:
https://ratings.fide.com/profile/30...
"std 2627
rapid Not rated
blitz 2449"
I was just listening to a perpetual chess podcast with him and was curious about his games mentioned and noticed this. Thought I should mention it. |

I think GM Mishra's last FIDE rating is incorrect:>This is the case for all players in the cg database. The last FIDE ratings were updated somewhere around summer of 2020 I believe. |

 | | chancho: Found this post in Quora by one of the old CG posters <Moonlitknight> <You'd think that there would be more potential in the site. It has 3 million monthly visitors and could have been so much more than it is. Tragically, both the site's co-founders died young in their 50s. That has probably played a part.
Currently it's being maintained by volunteers in the community. What it needs is for a professional company to acquire it and revamp the design.> |

 | | MissScarlett: <What it needs is for a professional company to acquire it and revamp the design.> Like <chess.com> did with <chess24>. <It has 3 million monthly visitors> By my reckoning, a dozen posters account for 2.9 million visits. |

Jan-23-24 | | stone free or die: <<Missy> By my reckoning, a dozen posters account for 2.9 million visits.> Well, we could cut the volume down by a factor of 2, at least, if we eliminate the <Gateway Pundit> mirror feed over on <Rogoff>. . |

Jan-23-24 | | stone free or die: Does <CG> log uploaded games where it bounces PGN labels? (Any kind of record would do, but I'm specifically interested in games where the <Source> tag is stripped out) |

W Koch vs K Richter, 1930 (kibitz #10) W Koch vs K Richter, 1930 (kibitz #14) Can we get <steve> to implement the ideas here: chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #41187)
* * * * *
Also, does <CG> retain the original submissions? I don't see any reason for <Alan> to backtrack over his uploads - <CG> should be able to reprocess the games, determine it has the game but without the <Source> tag and update accordingly. Saving a verbatim copy of a game upload seems a good idea™. |
|
Jan-25-24
 | | MissScarlett: <Also, does <CG> retain the original submissions?> Not at my end. Copies of the most recent (dozen or so) PGN submissions are available as <Raw Data>, but they're shorn of ineligible tags, so the SourceTitle, etc. data is lost. The exception is PGNs that were rejected in upload. For instance, C Ahues vs W Lange, 1947 was rejected because the Result tag read <*>. I was able to re-submit it with the retained SourceTitle amended to Source: C Ahues vs W Lange, 1947 |

We've made an update to help keep the player pages up-to-date, including FIDE ratings.<stone free or die: Slightly different topic - <Game Uploading with CB source tags>>
It seems we should we update the game-loader to allow the additional [source] tags:
[SourceTitle "Deut Schachzeitung 1931/1"]
[SourceDate "2024.01.23"]
[SourceVersion "5"]
[SourceVersionDate "2024.01.24"]
[SourceQuality "1"]
We have the history of <Alan McGowan>'s PGN submissions before CG's updates; perhaps, in the future, we'll write a script to update his previous uploads as well |
|
Jan-25-24 | | stone free or die: <<steve> It seems we should we update the game-loader to allow the additional [source] tags:> Yes! Just put a quick fix in using the <SourceTitle> tag as an alias for now I think. (And you know how much I like aliases - ha!)
<We have the history of <Alan McGowan>'s PGN submissions before CG's updates; perhaps, in the future, we'll write a script to update his previous uploads as well> That's good news too. How many games are we talking about? (If just a handful - well, a handful by hand, has a ring to it) |
