 | | perfidious: Given the way one poster here has made their desire clear to have control of things and given their knowledge of such matters, it takes little imagination to envision how they might well use such a flaw to their advantage. This poster has already operated under multiple sock accounts in recent years and, I believe, would have no compunction over stirring up trouble for their own amusement. |

| Feb-09-24 | | stone free or die: <steve> - this switching off the forum issue has happened before. You and I both fully understand why <CG> switches a user's forum off when their subscription expires. My question is - why can't you remember the user's settings, and when they renew automatically restore it? It certainly would cause less confusion, and be, I think, more intuitive and in line with expectations. |

 | | gezafan: In the international tournaments of the past were players required to seal an adjourned move after 40 moves or could they play on if they wanted to? |
|
| Feb-10-24 | | stone free or die: <geza> the Bistro is perhaps a better place to ask your question. But I can provide an indication here at least.
If you're asking about the broad history - then yes, players could play on, depending on which tournament. In the early days, the adjournments were based on time - according to the allotted playing session times. If the game wasn't finished by lunch break, it would be adjourned till the evening session. If the continuation wasn't finished by the bedtime break, it would be adjourned for the special day scheduled for adjournment completion. Not all of these adjournments involved sealed envelopes. In fact, some of the early tournaments had proscriptions against studying the adjourned position. Aside - when I cover a tournament, and the press coverage is really good (e.g. Helms reporting), then I often record the move at which the games were adjourned, and they weren't at a fixed move. Now, as tournament play evolved, regulations became more, well, regulated - especially when FIDE took over. Sealed moves became the norm, but the regulations still allowed players to continue till the end of the playing session. In fact - here's the current regulations, and there's no mention of a fixed move: <Guidelines I. Adjourned GamesI.1 Adjournment procedure:
I.1.1 If a game is not finished at the end of the time prescribed for play, the arbiter shall require the player having the move to ‘seal’ that move. The player must write his/her move in unambiguous notation on a paper scoresheet, put his/her scoresheet and that of his/her opponent in an envelope, seal the envelope and only then stop the chessclock. Until he/she has stopped the chessclock the player retains the right to change his/her sealed move. If, after being told by the arbiter to seal his/her move, the player makes a move on the chessboard he/she must write that same move on his/her scoresheet as his/her sealed move. I.1.2 A player having the move who adjourns the game before the end of the playing session shall be considered to have sealed at the nominal time for the end of the session, and his/her remaining time shall so be recorded. etc.>

 | | Troller: There was indeed no definite rule about adjourning at a certain move number. You would have to seal once the allotted time for move 40 was spent but you could <choose> to seal anytime after move 40 by "spending" the remains of your allotted time. In most cases players had spent most of their time anyway so adjournment would be move 41-42 but sometimes several more moves were made. On the other hand it could be tempting to get the game into "the workshop" via adjournment if you were not certain about the correct plan. Old game comments often mention such considerations. I have played with adjournments as well, usually move 41, not many strategical considerations were involved, apart from getting home into bed. There must be a huge amount of kibitzers on cg who have experience with adjourning, most of us are certainly old enough... |

| Feb-18-24 | | Messiah: <me>: There is a chess website where the moderation is terrible, it is always double standards, and some get banned for minuscule deviations, while others are not sanctioned even for the worst violations of the rules and good manners. In this context, a guy, who was repeatedly punished unjustifiedly by the admins and moderstors of this site, finds exhilaration when sockpuppets get finally restricted. Write a very short uplifting story about this. <Gemini>: Elias, a seasoned knight on the Chessverse battlefield, surveyed the forums with a tired sigh. Another innocent pawn sacrificed to the capricious kings of moderation. A shadow of frustration clung to him, a constant companion since his own unjust exile months ago. Yet, today, amidst the usual vitriol, a flicker of amusement caught his eye. "Finally!" a username he recognized as a notorious troll glowered, "My sockpuppets get silenced while others roam free, spewing venom!" Elias felt a thrill, a rare spark of warmth in the icy halls of Chessverse. This digital jester, a thorn in countless sides, had met his match. It wasn't justice, not truly, but a sweet dose of irony. A small smile tugged at his lips. Maybe, just maybe, the scales weren't forever rigged. He remembered whispers of an underground chess haven, a sanctuary for the disillusioned. A place where fair play thrived, unburdened by the whims of biased rulers. His fingers hovered over the search bar, a nascent hope blossoming in his chest. Perhaps, it was time to trade the familiar battlefield for uncharted squares, where his moves might finally be judged by their merit, not the color of his virtual knight. With a click, Elias closed the Chessverse tab, a tiny ember of optimism flickering in his eyes. The game wasn't over, not by a long shot. And on a new board, under different rules, who knew what victories awaited? |
