Feb-23-06  Bobak Zahmat: <ahmadov> Well in recent tournament it was clear that Topalov and Anand were the best. But I think Topalov is getting exhauseted. Afterwards, Anand has taken the right decision by not participating at this tournament I think.
Feb-23-06  YouRang: <Individual highlights for round 5>

BEST PREDICTORS (3 of 4):
AdrianP, babakova, cade, Dim Weasel, like a GM, offramp, viapori

5 people went 0 for 4.

GAME CORRECTLY PREDICTED BY THE FEWEST PEOPLE:

Aronian-Svidler[1-0]
Predicted by: offramp + like a GM

A particularly great round for <offramp> and <like a GM>!

Feb-23-06  suenteus po 147: Ouch. Another round of 0/4. Looks like I'm pulling a Topalov this tournament, despite going 3/4 one round.

cu8sfan: <ahmadov> <Why did you go to that cemetery if not for paying tribute to Morphy ;)?> Let's see, what else is there... Marie Laveaux and the famous grave of the Easy Rider movie. We had a great tour guide but in retrospect it surprises me he didn't mention Morphy.

By the way this graveyard is in the old town of New Orleans, which is a little more elevated than newer parts of the city so I think Katrina spared it.

cu8sfan: Pop quiz: Which player's results are we as a group predicting best? And which worst?
Feb-24-06  percyblakeney: My guess is Bacrot as best and Topalov as worst.

cu8sfan: <percyblakeney: My guess is Bacrot as best and Topalov as worst.> Correct! For Bacrot we got 129 of 249 predictions right (51.8%), for Topalov only 55 of 249 (22.1%).

In Wijk, the record after five rounds was van Wely with 214/301 (71.1%).

cu8sfan: I'd like to compare our prediction performance for players between Wijk aan Zee and Linares:

<Player / Wijk Performance / Linares Performance / Change in Pct.>

Leko / 59.7% / 43.8% / -26.6%
Bacrot / 53.6% / 51.8% / -3.4%
Topalov / 52.6% / 22.1% / -58.0%
Aronian / 48.2% / 38.2% / -20.7%
Ivanchuk / 46.9% / 40.2% / -14.3%

Here's how I interpret these numbers:

1. So far Linares is more difficult to predict than Wijk aan Zee.

2. Leko and Topalov have considerable drops in prediction accuracy. Leko because he wins instead of draws and Topalov because he loses instead of wins.

I think the numbers will even out a bit over the course of the whole tournament.

In Wijk, the record after five rounds was van Wely with 214/301 (71.1%).> Is it because they preferred draws in the respective tournaments, instead of playing decisive games? (As we know, it is safer predict draw than any other result)

WannaBe: My goodness, I've gone from 2nd place all the way down to below <DRAWER> ?? Oy Vey.
Feb-25-06  RolandTesh: <suenteus po 147>

You are a courageous man, predicting that Topalov will beat Leko. I wouldn't be surprised if you are right. This tournament is like watching Topalov on acid.

Feb-26-06  percyblakeney: This has been the prediction contest from hell, only three are over 50% this far...
Feb-26-06  Appaz: Nice predictions last round <Joshka>!

Will be intersting to see how many predicted the Topalov loss when/if our dear statisticians presents their numbers (I'm to lazy to check :)

Feb-26-06  Chess Classics: <cu8sfan> I might want to try this-do I have to predict for every round? Am I too late?

Joshka: <appaz> Hey thanks but I just got lucky:-) I believe I went hitless in Round 2, so I need 4 for 4 to just even up. Someone posted that it's just as hard to predict all 4 wrong than right. Believe it's true! Too many decisive games in this Tourney, so far. I'm gonna bet that for this second leg, more draws will happen, but God only knows! One thing for sure if Topalov finishes dead last, this will have to be the shock of the century. Don't believe it will happen, he's gonna get some wins in this second half.

WannaBe: Oh geeze... I've fallen below <RANDOM>!!! (I've fallen, and I can't get up!!)

Round 7

Leko - Topalov 1-0
Vallejo - Ivanchuk 1-0
Svidler - Radjabov 1-0
Bacrot - Aronian 1/2

Feb-26-06  you vs yourself: <WannaBe> I feel you brother:) This touranment has been a predictions disaster for me mainly because of the inconsistency of Peter Svilder, Leko winning games and Topy losing. Let's see if I can get back up by the end of linares half.

cu8sfan: <I might want to try this-do I have to predict for every round? Am I too late?> You can start any time you like. As unpredictable as this tournament has been you might even still finish first. (-:
Feb-26-06  suenteus po 147: <RolandTesh> I don't look at it as courage. As I've explained to <ou vs yourself> it's more of hedging bet on my part. If Topalov wins, great, I get a prediction point. If Leko wins (which I think he might) then I rejoice and cheer as a Leko fan. Besides, it doesn't matter what I predict for Topalov's game, it's never right.
Feb-26-06  RolandTesh: <suenteus po 147>

<Besides, it doesn't matter what I predict for Topalov's game, it's never right.>

LOL, I feel your confusion and understand better now.

Feb-27-06  Mating Net: Do we get extra credit if we picked Sweden to win the gold in hockey?
Feb-27-06  YouRang: <Individual highlights for round 6>

BEST PREDICTORS (3 for 4):
Joshka, Mating Net, YouRang(!)

2 people went 0 for 4
33 (out of 47) people went 1 for 4

GAMES CORRECTLY PREDICTED BY THE FEWEST PEOPLE:

Topalov-Vallejo[0-1]
Predicted by: Joshka!!

Joshka gets my vote for most amazing prediction! (In the betting ranker, Joshka gets the whole pot to himself: $47 in one game!)

Ivanchuk-Svidler[1-0]
Predicted by: YouRang + Tassadar + Resignation Trap + peabody88 + offramp + Mating Net + Joshka + Bobak Zahmat
