Leko - Topalov 1-0 ...>
Very interesting prediction, indeed ;)>
I suck, I suck!! I'm stuck on 10 correct!! I try to go with the logical outcome(s), it doesn't happen, so I completely reversed my strategy, and pick the other way, it doesn't work either! Grrrr..... I'm so far out of this... =(
Round #8
Leko - Vallejo 1-0
Topalov - Svidler 1/2
Ivanchuk - Bacrot 1-0
Radjabov - Aronian 1/2` |

I believe that poor prediction has nothing to do with playing chess. So, it is better to play better chess than predict better results ;). |
Feb-27-06 | | YouRang: Here's a curious measure of how difficult it has been to predict this tournament: There are exactly 50 people who have submitted predictions for all 7 rounds. Of them, only 11 (22%) have been able to predict games more successfully than the pseudo-contestant called "RANDOM". Mind you, RANDOM is a complete moron. Think of it as predictions being made by a monkey. Most of us are getting whupped by a monkey. :-( |
Feb-27-06
 | | WannaBe: If we have 1000 monkeys making 1000 predictions for 1000 years, would the outcome be Shakespear? |
Feb-27-06 | | YouRang: Earlier today, I posted the <Individual highlights for round 6>. Some of you might have noticed that I successfully resisted the temptation to brag. I'm sure that by now you've all noticed that <I was among the "best predictors">, and furthermore that <I was one of only 8 people to have correctly predicted Ivanchuk's win over Svidler>. You're probably wondering why I didn't toot my horn about this remarkable performance. Well, I didn't point these things out because that would make it look like I was bragging. Far be it from me to brag. |

 | | cu8sfan: <Do we get extra credit if we picked Sweden to win the gold in hockey?> No, you actually lose all your points. Those damned Swedes, beat us in hockey, beat us in curling... If only Switzerland and Sweden was one country... <YouRang> It's great to have someone here that's not as self-absorbed as others. I for instance have had such a bad performance for the Moralia half of the tournament that I started wondering if I am still King of the World... |
Mar-01-06
 | | lostemperor: That was also (just a little) for the gambling - risk taking list of YouRang. Obviously:) |
Mar-01-06 | | YouRang: <cu8sfan> <Swedes...beat us in curling> Yeah, but I figure if you have to get beat at something, curling would be the preference. In the U.S., we usually make fun of the team that wins in curling (of course that will probably change now that we got a first-ever bronze medal for curling). |

 | | WannaBe: <YouRang...first-ever bronze medal for curling.> Gives a new meaning to 'Miracle on Ice'. |

 | | tpstar: <YouRang> Why can't you do it?/Why can't you set your monkey free?/Always gettin' into it/Do you love your monkey or do you love me?/Why can't you do it?/Why do I have to share my baby with a monkey? - George Michael, "Random," I mean, "Monkey" <Most of us are getting whupped by a monkey> No accounting for tastes. I noticed that you were among the "Best Predictors." I also noticed that you were one of only 8 people to have correctly predicted Ivanchuk's win over Svidler. I also noticed that you successfully resisted the temptation to brag. ;>D |
Mar-01-06 | | YouRang: Just to complete the segue between <curling and chess>, I just read the Wikipedia entry for "curling", and it included this comment: "The level of precision and complex nature of the strategic thinking required to win has led curling to be referred to as 'chess on ice.'" :-p |
Mar-01-06 | | notsodeepthought: Hmmmm - does the same source refer to bocce to as "chess on sand (gravel)"? |
Mar-01-06 | | YouRang: <tpstar> - I appreciate that you understand the dilemma faced by those of us who post results for contests in which we are also participants. It's always okay for us to complement good performances on the part of other contestants, but when we ourselves perform well, such complements are frowned upon, and it even raises suspicions of fraud! In my dual role as result-poster and <co-winner of the prestigious Best Avatar award>, I feel it is my solemn duty to forego any self-glorification in order to preserve the good reputation of the contest. |
Mar-01-06
 | | tpstar: <Curling> Excuse me while I let out a blood-curling scream. <chess on ice> Eureka! "Skating with Chess Celebrities" - a surefire smash. <self-glorification> That's great how you are one of the select few spanking the monkey. |
Mar-01-06 | | babakova: Chess is nothing like curling or any other sport for that matter. That is just something sport commentators say when for instance in a hockey game play is slowed down and nothing seems to happen. -commentator: " This is like a game of chess."
-me: "No it isnt." |
Mar-01-06 | | notsodeepthought: <babakova> An excellent point - it's amazing how many out there who clearly have no clue about chess compare their sport/work/activity of any sort to chess. These are usually people who are lucky if they can tell the king from a pawn. Yet they breezily equate anything that does not involve immediate action to "a game of chess". |

 | | cu8sfan: <Hey maybe we can have a prediction contest for how many Cubans will defect during the World Baseball Classic!!..heard reports that as many as 20 could!!> I doubt it will be that high so do you want to bet? (-; |
Mar-02-06
 | | Joshka: <Cu8sFan> Yea the baseball "mouth" here on our local am radio show, Mike Trvisano,WTAM 1100AM, ALWAYS likes to exaggerate somewhat;-) These ballplayers all know the consequences of what happens to their families back home in Cuba if they decide. So I'd say a safe bet would be 3. They also have to defect to some other country first like the Republica Dominica, Venezuela, although I don't presume Venezuela will be cooperating with the USA at the moment. Then in one of these baseball crazy countries, they get together with an agent who negotiates with the guys with with deep pockets. A few years ago the "Indians" got Danys Baez this way, although he has since signed on with another team. |
Mar-02-06 | | Bobak Zahmat: Can't wait for the second half of Linares to start! I'm wondering whether people still have faith in Topalov (I have!) |
Mar-02-06 | | Resignation Trap: <Bobak Zahmat> According to my predictions, Topalov will win the Linares half of the tournament with 5.5/7 (or 8/14, if you prefer), but he will finish behind Leko, Svidler and Aronian (all with 9/14). Ivanchuk and Radjabov with 6/14, Vallejo with 5, and Bacrot with 4. |
Mar-02-06 | | YouRang: Here's <some more prediction-performance stats> to indicate how rough it has been to predict the Linares tournament so far (through 7 rounds): Collectively, we've predicted that Topalov would win his 'white' games 129 times -- far more than any other player (2nd is Svidler with 58 times). For Topalov's 'white' games, we are 0 for 129.
How about 'black' games? The player we've most often predicted to win his 'black' games is Ivanchuk -- 60 times. For Ivanchuk's 'black' games, we are 0 for 60. |
Mar-02-06
 | | Joshka: <you rang> Enjoy your stats, thanks!:-)...Do ya have one for how many 4 for 4's there have been? And which one if any, had the most decisive games? |
Mar-03-06 | | Bobak Zahmat: <Resignation Trap><<Bobak Zahmat> According to my predictions, Topalov will win the Linares half of the tournament with 5.5/7 (or 8/14, if you prefer), but he will finish behind Leko, Svidler and Aronian (all with 9/14). Ivanchuk and Radjabov with 6/14, Vallejo with 5, and Bacrot with 4.> There is no way three players will gain 9/14!!! Believe me! If one player is able to reach it would be fantastic. Check World Chess Championship (2005)
