  cu8sfan: <YouRang> I heard that he had a stroke, I didn't know he had died.

I remember the '91 World Series very well, it's the first one I was able to watch on TV (can you imagine, in 1991 we had baseball on TV in Switzerland, in 2006 we don't...). I can still picture Puckett running back and leaping up against the wall, stealing the Braves of a sure home run. And of course, his home run in game 6. RIP, Kirby Puckett.

Mar-07-06  blingice: Ooh, yes, Minnesota will be feeling this loss tomorrow pretty potently, and I'd suppose I will hear many people talking about it in school tomorrow.

<cu8sfan> Pre-congrats on your upcoming 5000th post, in case I miss the ceremony.

  cu8sfan: Well, this is my 5,000th post. Until I delete some of them once the Linares tournament is over. That's why I won't make a big fuss about it. I'd just like to thank you all for participating in the prediction contest. I know y'all are having fun doing it. So good luck and enjoy!
Mar-07-06  iron maiden: Congratulations on #5,000, <cu8sfan>!

  cu8sfan: More statistics!

Here's how many points we scored all together, sorted descending by score per round:

<round | cumulated score of all participants | number of participants | cumulated score/participants = performance | performance/games per round>

09 | 92 | 36 | 2.556 | 0.64
03 | 129 | 52 | 2.481 | 0.62
07 | 83 | 46 | 1.804 | 0.45
10 | 69 | 41 | 1.683 | 0.42
05 | 75 | 48 | 1.563 | 0.39
08 | 61 | 44 | 1.386 | 0.35
06 | 60 | 47 | 1.277 | 0.32
02 | 63 | 50 | 1.260 | 0.32
04 | 63 | 50 | 1.260 | 0.32
01 | 59 | 49 | 1.204 | 0.30

All rounds | 754 | 463 | 1.62 | 0.41

Interesting dip in participation for round 9, by the way. So overall we scored an average 1.62 points per round which is 40%.

Let's compare these numbers to the Wijk aan Zee tournament:

12 | 256 | 53 | 4.830 | 0.69
01 | 284 | 64 | 4.438 | 0.63
08 | 225 | 56 | 4.018 | 0.57
10 | 205 | 56 | 3.661 | 0.52
06 | 188 | 54 | 3.481 | 0.50
09 | 197 | 57 | 3.456 | 0.49
13 | 177 | 53 | 3.340 | 0.48
05 | 192 | 58 | 3.310 | 0.47
07 | 168 | 52 | 3.231 | 0.46
03 | 197 | 61 | 3.230 | 0.46
04 | 187 | 60 | 3.117 | 0.45
11 | 164 | 58 | 2.828 | 0.40
02 | 141 | 58 | 2.431 | 0.35

All rounds | 2581 | 740 | 3.488 | 0.50

In Wijk aan Zee we scored an average of 3.5 per round which is 50%.

<Tournament | Avg. participants per round | Performance>

Wijk aan Zee | 57 | 50%
Linares | 46 | 40%

Mar-07-06  cade: The participation dip for R9 is especially interesting considering it is also the round with the highest correct predictions. All those people who missed R9 missed the easiest round to predict and therefor lost more than a rounds worth of predictions.
Mar-07-06  YouRang: <Individual highlights for round 11>

BEST PREDICTORS (4 for 4):
cromat, lostemperor, Montreal1666, percyblakeney, radu stancu, Tassadar, yalie, YouRang(!)

8 people went 1 for 4.
Nobody went 0 for 4.

Mar-07-06  BishopofBlunder: Auguries for Round 12:

Leko - Bacrot 1/2
Svidler - Aronian 1-0
Vallejo - Radjabov 0-1
Topalov - Ivanchuk 1/2

Mar-07-06  suenteus po 147: I like seeing the use of the term "auguries."

  tpstar: <cu8sfan> Congratulations on 5000! So what's the precedent when you get there?

<suenteus po 147> Auguries. ;>D

Mar-08-06  YouRang: <Individual highlights for (crummy) round 12>

BEST PREDICTOR (4 for 4):
dimradil
(Amazingly, only one person predicted all draws!)

2 people went 0-for-4.

Radjabov made it onto my poop list.

  cu8sfan: More stats from Stat Geek:

For round 12, <MAJORITY>, the guy that predicts what the majority of participants has predicted, had these predictions going:

<Pairing: White wins (#predictions) | Draw | Black wins>

Leko - Bacrot: 20 | 23 | 2 -->
Prediction = 1/2
Svidler - Aronian: 8 | 34 | 3 -->
Prediction = 1/2
Topalov - Ivanchuk: 31 | 11 | 3 -->
Prediction = 1-0
Vallejo - Radjabov: 3 | 24 | 18 -->
Prediction = 1/2

<MAJORITY> went 3 for 4. He's got a score of 24 for the whole tournament which is good for 7th through 11th in the standings.

In round 12, 45 participants scored 92 points which is an average of 2.04 right predictions or 51%. The overall performance is still pretty low, 1.73 or 43%.

Mar-10-06  YouRang: Hmmm. I just notice this (it's not unusual for me to be the last one to notice something):

In Morelia, Topalov and Leko met in round 7 (the final round in Morelia), which made me assume that they would meet again in round 14 (the final round in Linares).

But here they are meeting in round 13. Round 14 will be a rematch of the round 6 games. I wonder why they switched the order of the last two round (relative to their order in Morelia)?

Mar-10-06  YouRang: <Individual highlights for round 13>

BEST PREDICTOR (4 for 4):
dimradil!

That makes two rounds in a row where <dimradil> was the only person to have a perfect 4-for-4! Amazing!

16 people went 1 for 4.
Nobody went 0 for 4.

GAME CORRECTLY PREDICTED BY THE FEWEST PEOPLE:
Radjabov-Svidler[1-0]
Predicted by: dimradil + Jafar219 + suenteus po 147 + TechN9ne

Mar-10-06  YouRang: <Alternate scoring systems> For anyone interested, I've posted the results for four alternate scoring systems in my forum: User: YouRang

1. Betting ranker (each game is a $1 wager, and money is divided among those who predicted the correct outcome).

2. Weighted ranker (like the standard ranker where you get points for correct predictions, except that decided games are worth 2 points, while draws are worth 1 point)

3. Risk ranker (If you predict a win, you get 3 points if right, 0 if wrong. If you predict a "safe" draw, you get 1 point, no matter what).

4. 1-2-3 ranker (Like the Weighted ranker above, except correct predictions scored as: 1=draw, 2=white, 3=black).

<Jafar219> has the lead in the "Betting Ranker", and <yoozum> is cleaning up everywhere else!

I'll post the final results of each scoring system on Monday.

Mar-11-06  bobbyboomer: Round # 14
Leko-Aronian 1/2
Bacrot-Radjabov 0-1
Svidler-Ivanchuk 1/2
Vallejo-Topalov 0-1
Thanks!!
(missed the last round due to dumbness on my part) Thank you for the contest and all the stats. Can't wait until the next tournament!!
Mar-11-06  suenteus po 147: The last game has been decided finally. All told, I earned 19 points out of 56 possible points. Very sad. At best that's 34%. I wish I could say MTel would be better for me, but with Kamsky participating I know I will lose many points predicting victories for him ;)
Mar-11-06  NakoSonorense: I just remembered that I won last year's cu8sfan's Linares prediction contest! :)
