 | | cu8sfan: The Red Sox sweepeat for their second World Series in four years!!! |
Oct-29-07 | | YouRang: Well, after sweeping their way through the playoffs, the Rockies were hoping for a sweep in the World Series too. But this wasn't quite what they had in mind... |
Oct-29-07
 | | cu8sfan: Lol! Just like the oracle of Delphi. "By starting this war you'll destroy an empire." However she failed to mention which empire. (-: |
Oct-29-07 | | YouRang: It does raise a question:
I don't think any team has ever swept through the playoffs and the world series, *winning* each sweep. However, the Rockies just completed the postseason, making all the way through the world series, such that every playoff series was decided by a sweep (even though they lost the last one). Are they the first team to do that? |

Are they the first team to do that?> Of course, it only makes sense to look at World Series play after the introduction of League Championships. The <1976 Reds> swept Philly 3-0 and the Yankees 4-0 in the World Series. Since the introduction of two playoff series (or is it "serieses"?), both the <1999 Yankees> (3-0 vs. Texas, 4-1 vs. Boston, 4-0 vs. Atlanta) and the <2005 White Sox> (3-0 vs. Boston, 4-1 vs. Anaheim/California/LA, 4-0 vs. Houston) have come very close to a perfect sweep but haven't managed to pull it off. Also note that over the last ten years there have been no fewer than five World Series sweeps and only two have gone all the way (2001 and 2002). On the other end of the spectrum, all the series of the 1972 and the 1973 postseason went for the maximum number of games. In 1985 and 1986 all the series went for full length except for one that went for one game less. Don't worry, I'm not a walking baseball encyclopedia. I found all these answers here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/p.... By the way, the best World Series I witnessed was the 1991 series between the Twins and the Braves. |

 | | WannaBe: That '91 series was a good one... Jack Morris & Kirby Puckett, if my memory serves. |
Oct-29-07
 | | cu8sfan: <WannaBe> Yes, Morris was great in game 7. And don't forget Chuck Knoblauch, whose phantom catch stopped Atlanta's Lonnie Smith from scoring the winning run. |
Oct-29-07 | | YouRang: Well, this shows a little bias on my part, but the 1988 World Series was my favorite. Of course, that's the one where Kirk Gibson, with 2 gimpy legs tapped the two-out two-run walk-off homer to beat Oakland 5-4. I suspect that if Orel Hershiser hadn't been so impressive, Gibson might have been the first player to ever win a world series MVP whose entire contribution was one single plate appearance. :-) |

 | | WannaBe: Speaking of sweeps... The Oakland A's made it to thee straight World Series with Tony LaRussa as manager, (the team had Canseco, McGwire, and pitchers included Welch and Stewart). Of course, as <YouRang> pointed out, A's lost to the Dodgers in '88, but they swept the SF Giants in '89 (Earthquake series) and the A's got swept by the Cincinnati Reds in '90. Not quite sure if they are first team to sweep someone, and then gets it done to them the very next year... |

 | | cu8sfan: I hate Leopard! I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT!!! |
Nov-06-07
 | | Open Defence: aawww i was thinking of getting it... what do you hate about it ? everything or just a few things ? |
Nov-07-07
 | | cu8sfan: <Open Defence> I have just made a complete backup and installed Leopard from scratch. The first installation I made was merely an update. Things seem to be running better now. Give me a couple of days to check out how it's working now and I'll drop you a message. |

 | | cu8sfan: <Open Defence> I've read about quite a few problems with Leopard on different forums on the internet. And trust me, I've encountered them all! First I only did the upgrade. That's when I got two bluescreens. Somehow they went away. Then the airport would not be detected anymore. Here's the solution to this problem: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php.... Everything was fine for a week. Then a new software update was out (iTunes and QuickTime). After installing Finder wouldn't start anymore. I tried everything! Archive & Install, Erase & Install, completely erasing the hard drive and installing Tiger or Leopard, nothing worked and there was nothing in any of the forums. I finally found a solution: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.... Two things:
1. If this were Windows, I would probably just shrug it off. But with a Mac? I've done more reboots (including shutting it down the hard way) over the last ten days than in three years. 2. Now that I'm up and running again, the worst thing is the feeling that remains. Whenever I start the computer I think "God, I hope this boot will work". I've never had this thought before and I don't like it. Well, maybe you get lucky. And really, when it works, Leopard is cool. But maybe waiting for 10.5.1 is worth it. |
Nov-08-07 | | technical draw: Darn, <cub8fan> I thought you said check out my forum for my leotard experience! |
Nov-09-07
 | | Open Defence: thanks <cu8sfan> ... wont tinker with my current Mac then |

 | | cu8sfan: <I think you got 'robbed' 4 month of premium membership?! Aren't you a life-member?? :-))> (-: I think cg.com should offer hereditary membership. At least I don't have a lifetime subscription to NiC and can enjoy my second prize. |
Dec-02-07 | | acirce: How on earth did you solve that anagram?!
I tried to come up with something that had 'Bareev' or 'Reuben' (Fine, presumably) in it... and I thought I was clever to even get that far :-) |
Dec-02-07 | | Chess Classics: 2 prizes already! Well done.
I mean, I was going to buy a life-membership, but seeing how cu8sfan got robbed, I might just hold off. Regards,
CC |

Dec-02-07
 | | cu8sfan: <How on earth did you solve that anagram?!> Yeah, I got stuck with Bareev, too, but the remaining letters just didn't lead to anything. <I mean, I was going to buy a life-membership, but seeing how cu8sfan got robbed, I might just hold off.> It is totally worth it, but with them giving out prizes, I'd probably wait and see before buying. |
Dec-02-07 | | Chess Classics: Actually, I was kidding, but now that you mention it I will wait a little bit to renew... Regards,
CC |
Dec-02-07
 | | cu8sfan: <Chess Classics> As long as you do renew after X-mas that's a good idea. Gee, I don't want to be the one ruining cg.com's business. |
Dec-02-07 | | Hesam7: <cu8sfan> quit playing the clues game!!!! |
Dec-02-07
 | | WannaBe: One would expect <acirce> to get the Rune answer... 'Less <cu8sfan> been lying to us about his nationality. =) |
Dec-02-07 | | NakoSonorense: As a kid trying to learn the capitals of the world, I always used to get Switzerland and Sweden mixed up ("Suiza" and "Suecia" in Spanish). Maybe they're not that different, after all... |
