Jan-17-06 | | BishopofBlunder: <cu8sfan> I am tied for second?? Something must be terribly wrong!!! |
Jan-17-06
 | | WannaBe: I am averaging 3.25?! Something must wrong. (I swore I told Anand to not take the draw offer.) |
Jan-17-06 | | YouRang: <cu8sfan> Your results match mine, at least for all the top contestants. I assume you added a fixup to deal with a player named "Solokov"? :) |
Jan-17-06
 | | tpstar: <cu8sfan> Great job on the Prediction Contest, as always. Good that <YouRang> helped streamline things even more. Concentrating the predictions here is working much better versus posting them on the tournament page. =) |
Jan-17-06
 | | cu8sfan: <tpstar> Thanks. I'm also happy about the situation on the official page. Here, the contest doesn't bother anybody. |
Jan-17-06 | | suenteus po 147: It's funny how people's tastes differ. I love seeing other people's predictions, but I hate sifting through pages of complaints against draws on the tournament page :p |
Jan-17-06 | | YouRang: <badmove> Take heart. It's usually difficult to beat <Drawer>, because the draw is the most common outcome. In fact, this tournament has had a relatively low draw rate, which has made it possible for many of us to compete with <Drawer>. I seem to recall that in tournaments past, <Drawer> (and others who mostly mimmick <Drawer>) was the runaway winner. |
Jan-18-06 | | YouRang: In round 4, there were six contestants tied for best prediction performance (5 out of 7): acirce, BishopofBlunder, Dim Weasel, Montreal1666, NakoSonorense, Xerox |
Jan-18-06 | | suenteus po 147: <cu8sfan> Question: Will you be deleting all posts peripheral to the predictions as well? (I have made the occasional aside while posting my predictions) |
Jan-18-06 | | Bent Bexley: Round 5 Predictions:
Tiviakov-Sokolov 1/2
Topalov-Mamedyarov 1-0
Gelfand-van Wely 1/2
Karjakin-Bacrot 0-1
Aronian-Adams 1/2
Ivanchuk-Kamsky 1/2
Anand-Leko 1/2
Btw, <PinkPanther> to call Kamsky "washed-up" is unfair if not insulting. Clearly, he is not in his best form so far in Wijk but he had some success in the recent World Cup. He is only 31 and certainly has time to regain his old form. I also find it curious that any fan of Michael Adams would call another top GM washed-up. |
Jan-18-06 | | PinkPanther: There is a difference between Michael Adams. Kamsky hasn't shown me one impressive result since his return, since his performance at the World Cup was largely based up on his rapid success (which nobody is really questioning). There is a difference between having a bad year and looking at a person who basically had a 9 year layoff. We don't know if Kamsky will ever be even a shadow of his old self. Need I remind you, Kamsky is -2 in this tournament and Adams is =. |
Jan-18-06 | | PinkPanther: Everybody has bad years. Kramnik, Kasparov...hell, Kasparov played like garbage for most of 2004 until the very end, would we call him washed up? Not hardly. Leko had a lousy year not including Corus last year, would we call him washed up? No. What did Topalov do in 2004? Not a whole lot. He got to the semi-finals of the FIDE WCC, but Adams got further. |
Jan-18-06 | | Bent Bexley: <PinkPanther We don't know if Kamsky will ever be even a shadow of his old self.> I agree. We don't know if Kamsky will be what he once was. And because we don't know, it is premature to call him "washed-up." I only took the small shot at Mickey to emphasize the point that it is premature to write Kamsky off. I agree that the positions Kamsky and Adams are in aren't really comparable. |
Jan-19-06 | | PinkPanther: I just think Kamsky might have passed the point of no return during his retirement. I mean...he's rusty, and I'm sure he'll improve, but if he continues to play poorly then he's not going to get big time invitations and therefore won't get the chance to show what he can do. It's one thing to beat Joel Benjamin and Jay Bonin in the US Championship, it's quite another to get to play in tournaments like this. With that said...I talked to him on the ICC a while back and he said he was planning to play for the US in the Olympiad this year...given the chance. |
Jan-19-06 | | Bent Bexley: Kamsky will have to work hard if he wants to be a top 10 player again. He will have to build an opening repertoire worthy of a top player and not play or misplay a 2...Nf6 Scandinavian like he did against Topalov. He fights hard at the board (like almost drawing against Aronian) so I hope he does reach the top or near top again. |

 | | cu8sfan: <Question: Will you be deleting all posts peripheral to the predictions as well? (I have made the occasional aside while posting my predictions)> I'll try and leave your comments in there but if you really want to keep your kibitzing for all here to see don't put it in the same post you wrote your predictions in. But not everything will be gone. |
Jan-19-06 | | yoozum: Wow, I wrote my predictions about 5 minutes ago and was staring at them, considering whether or not I should change Sokolov-Leko to a 0-1, so it's a complete coincidence that my predictions are the same as <iron maiden>'s! |
Jan-19-06 | | YouRang: In round 5, the 3 <best predictors> (getting 6 of 7 correct) were: WannaBe, you vs yourself, zarra |
Jan-19-06
 | | WannaBe: 6/7 !! Woo woo!! =) Too bad Topalov couldn't get a win with white. |
Jan-19-06 | | you vs yourself: <wannabe> Stop copying my predictions! |
Jan-19-06
 | | WannaBe: <you vs yourself> I was copying <zarra> or was it <zarra> who copied from you?! =) Captain Ouever was under Captain Donne? |
Jan-19-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Wow, 6/7 excellent job guys! |
Jan-19-06 | | YouRang: Here is another <interesting prediction performance result> to consider. In each round, there is usually some game (or games) that had an unexpected outcome. That is, an outome that few people predicted. Below are games, round-by-round, that had the fewest correct predictions, and the people that made those daring predictions: ROUND 1:
Aronian-Ivanchuk[0-1],Tassadar+mikejaqua+Father Karras+Endgame ROUND 2:
Adams-Topalov[1-0],Resignation Trap+babakova
Kamsky-Gelfand[1-0],YouRang+Appaz
ROUND 3:
Gelfand-Adams[1-0],YouRang+yalie+Resignation Trap+lmreith+Jafar219+Father Karras+bobbyboomer ROUND 4:
Bacrot-Gelfand[0-1],Joshka+Jafar219
ROUND 5:
Topalov-Mamedyarov[1/2],Xerox+me to play+excmo+AdrianP |
Jan-20-06 | | you vs yourself: <cu8sfan> According to <yourang> I got 6/7 in round 5. It seems to me that you've missed that prediction of mine. After the correction, I should have 18/5. Thanks for your time and effort. |
Jan-20-06
 | | cu8sfan: <you vs yourself> There was indeed a mistake and I've gotten several results wrong. Thanks for telling me. Still you (and WannaBe, zarra, nintenchess and Assassinater) have only had 5/7. I've verified this using both my old method and <YouRang>'s contest manager. <all> For your information: During this tournament I am using both my old and the new way to calculate final results. However, the contest manager is so reliable that for future tournaments I will only use <YouRang>'s contest manager. This will bring some rule changes which benefit all participants. By the way, I wish everyone could see the contest manager. A fine little piece of software, and it has a picture of <YouRang> that changes when you hover above it, and if you click it it changes again and says "You Rang!". Very funny. (-: |
