Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Damn. I'm pretty far off. :| So thanks for <not> hosting. :)

By the way, any ideas of what the next tournament will be? Bilbao maybe?

lostemperor: Penguincw, I could not find much information on Bilbao. Eg. how many players participate. Otherwise the Tal memorial if held in October is an interesting oltournament. If someone can keep an eye on information about these tournaments when available, would be welcome.

Penguincw: According to 2700chess.com, this is a possible website:

http://www.bilbaochess2014.com/

So far, I believe 6 players are participating, with Anand, Ponomariov, Aronian and Vallejo confirmed (but I guess it's best to wait; a lot can happen in 2 months).

lostemperor: With the chess master final lasting a week from 14 to 20 September, it is probably an 8 players tournament or only 6 players double round robin :)

lostemperor: Meanwhile another strong tournament also has ended a week ago: Biel.

1. Vachier-Lagrave 6
2. Wojtaszek 5.5
3. Hou YiFan 5
3. Harikrishna 5
3. Giri 5
6. Motylev 3.5

and the Olympiad in Tromsø is about to start!

lostemperor: In an exciting Olympiad in the fairy tale midsummer place of Tromsø, China won the gold with a seemingly partly experimental team of (very) young but very talented players mixed with rock solid "oldies".

Hungary won silver and India bronze on tie-break points. The latter even without their two best players Anand and Harikrishna.

lostemperor: I did think at the start that China's Olympiad team could be the most effective line up as a coherent team with the exeption perhaps of super prodigy Wei Yi (Wang Hao the obvoius choice here it seems) who may be too unexperienced still. As it turned out it could hardly be improved.

In less than a week, August 27, the top players are ready for the strongest ever 6 players double round robinj 2nd Sinquefield Cup.

Impressive line up:
Carlsen
Aronian
Caruana
Nakamura
Topalov
Vachier-Lagrave!

lostemperor: ANOUNCEMENT: Because of the historical nature of this tournament, the strongest ever, and its presumable difficult outcome, I d like to organize the CG.com well known traditional PREDICTION CONTEST of the final standings of this tournament in my forum at this last minute. Because of the late anouncement it will count officially if there are enough contestants playing or it will be just for the fun of it. So you are very welcome to post your predictions on the final standings of this tournament on my forum if you like to join in a readable format like below eg.:

1. Carlsen
2. Aronian
3. Caruana
3. Nakamura
3. Topalov
6. Vachier-Lagrave

This will be a one gold medal a person only meaning that a maximum of one gold a player can be awarded.. Have fun!
