 | | FSR: <moronovich> Thanks! The "marketplace" certainly seems to agree: Opening Explorer shows 1...b6 languishing in tenth place out of Black's 20 legal moves. FWIW, Houdini 3 doesn't think White has anything special there, and also slightly prefers ...d5 to ...d6. But until someone shows me a good plan for Black, I'm with you. I'd much rather be White. Maybe Lakdawala will enlighten me. Of course, if one doesn't like 3...e6 Black can always "go Hippo" with 3...g6 or even try 3...Nc6!? Opening Explorer |

 | | FSR: Incidentally, although I'm sure you know this stuff, I discussed the two busts to 3...f5? at length in my comment to R Hills vs T J Carr, 1983, and also at http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/20.... |

 | | moronovich: Thanks for responding and yet so quickly ! It must be late or very very early in your place. But charming to think about it as right now Mr.Chang is singing at the caraoekebar in Tokyo and all the suhshibars are erady for the big rush as the Colonel may be enjoying his early evening Chardonnay...;) Miles and moro was back in 93 and the
engines have developed astronomously(is that a word?),but I could imagine that some of them dont understand the subtleties in the Owens, like they often dont do in the Berlin. They are still better in the open positions I suppose. Re:the Hippo. One of my good friends,a decent Grandmaster, said it was among his colleaques almost common knowledge that in the Hippo the best setup for white is with 3 pawns edf,or edc.Otherwise white doesnt have much. But it is still a pity Owens doesnt seem to hold Water.Chess would be richer if it was good enough. "It is such a logic move"

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <FSR> If Black wants to try ...Nc6, the right line probably isn't 3...Nc6, but rather 3...Nf6 4.Qe2 and only then 4...Nc6 5.c3 e5. I never played that line much myself, but GM Blatny had OK results with it: Repertoire Explorer: Pavel Blatny (black) |

 | | moronovich: Hi´<Switch> !
I still like your refutation of the Owens : 1.g3 !! ;) |
|
Feb-28-15
 | | FSR: I received Lakdawala's book today. He recommends this line: Opening Explorer, which was pioneered by Miles(!), who apparently played it very successfully. Maybe 1...b6 is better than you think! |
|
| Feb-28-15 | | Shams: <FSR> How much of Lakdawala's book covers 1.c4 b6? Danny King's book is out of date. |

Feb-28-15
 | | FSR: In response to the line I mentioned, Houdini 3 recommends 10.Nxc4 Nxc4 11.e5! as leading to a +0.4 advantage, but astonishingly, Lakdawala doesn't bother mentioning 11.e5! (He just gives 11.Bxc4 Bxe4, remarking that it "isn't such a bad deal for Black, who traded a wing pawn for a more valuable central one. Black equalized, G. Sosonko-G. Welling, Dutch League 1994.") Not even mentioning the line preferred by Houdini is analytical malpractice in this day and age. I hope that this isn't typical of the book. In practice, White has scored only 50% with the move, but in just seven games. Interestingly, no one has played the pawn-losing 11...d5, Houdini's first choice. |

Maybe 1...b6 is better than you think> Thanks a lot <FSR> ! This is highly interesting and relevant. And perhaps good news for Owens defence,as a whole...!? I recall I also was toying around with simular ideas, trying to take advantage
of among other things, the weakened b3 square. The weakening f4 square also counts. As if White has to go g3 after a e5 push and Nd5,he can´t be better. Good news for Owens and luckily bad ;) news for our reputation. So far.. Owens without d6 !?!?--why not,if it works.
IF Owens should be playable at the highest level it would mean a lot to chess as a whole. |

 | | FSR: <moronovich> I agree. As you say, it would be great to have a new viable defense to 1.e4 in addition to the usual suspects. |

| Nov-22-15 | | virginmind: Hi <moronovich>, as you may have noticed , I've failed to renew my premium membership. I plan to do it soon. Until then, we can continue in your forum. The ETCC has finished today, with Russia winning it in both open and women sestions, and Carlsen with a not so convincing performance. Romania scored low, such is life. Heh, Nisipeanu managed a draw with Carlsen yesterday. Other than that I'm fine and not much new around here. See you soon! |

 | | moronovich: Hi <virginmind> !
Very good to hear from you again !
And good to hear you are doing fine.
Fine here too. After a marvellous weekend, especially with my good friend JWH.We can talk about everything and go from the most serious stuff til releasing laughter.A true gift it is. Yesterday the first snow felt and now it is here and glittering all over in the sunshine.Like diamonds or pearls. No better that that;)Mother natures own creation. But how about Carlsens creation.Has he lost some of it !? Or ? what do you think? Take care and say hello to your dear wife and see you around. A bientot ! |
|
Dec-02-15
 | | moronovich: Hi<virginmind> !
Hope you are all right !?
Are you looking forward to London Classic ?..
At least I am.Guess it will be a great tournament and very interesting to see if Carlsen can find his mojo again.. See you around and all the best. |
|
| Dec-03-15 | | virginmind: Hi <moronovich>, I'm fine and I will surely follow London tournament, only not so closely as I will still have to finish some job writing requirements. All eyes seem to be on Carlsen and his performance, will he confirm his real value or his bad form? All the best to you too! |
|
Dec-04-15
 | | moronovich: Hello <virginmind> ! Hmm,it feels like ages since last big tournament...And now we are only 6 hours away. I have always found London to be one of the best.Somehow they manage to create an atmosphere that suits the occasion and pay due respect to the players. It is a bit late chez toi,but I hope you will find the time and that you will succed with your reguirements ! Meanwhile I will enjoy having the whole house for myself till wife shows up around ten o´clock :) And may you have a fine weekend ! |
|
| Dec-04-15 | | virginmind: Hello, so here we go, London started and we have an interesting win for Giri. I didn't watch any of the games, just followed the video relay for a short time. I trust they were all faught off. Yup, the atmosphere is a warm, intimate one. Good luck! |
|
Dec-05-15
 | | moronovich: A bit surprisinly Giri is leading the pack and he may go through all 3 tournaments undefeated. Aronian and Carlsen are good bets as winners today IMHO and for (small) longshots Grischuk and MVL. Hope you will have time to watch,if it is one of your topprioritees. And good luck to you too ! |
|
Dec-06-15
 | | moronovich: Hmmm, not much going on for the moment.Or is it the silence before, at least a little storm,in London ? I guess there will be a couple of wins, but not convinced. But we shall see as wife and yours truly will make the annual christmas cookies. Not a bad tradition. The toughest part is avoiding too many calories ;) All the best and may you enjoy the remaining part of your weekend ! |
