Some chess books that I think are outstanding:

1. <Fundamental Chess Endgames>, by Müller & Lamprecht, reprinted 2020. 400pp+, £25.

2. <Secrets of Practical Chess>, by Dr Nunn. 256pp (the USUAL 256pp!, i.e. the usual 2^8). £20.

3. <Capablanca's Best Chess Endings>, Irving Chernev's best work. 300pp. £15.

4. <107 Great Chess Battles 1939-1945>, written by Alexander Alekhine, but edited by Edward Winter. 256pp, £15.

5 (a) <Petrosian Year by Year Volume 1 (1942-1962)>, and - Karolyi & Gyozalyan, 484pp.
(b) <Petrosian Year by Year Volume 2 (1963-1984)> - Karolyi & Gyozalyan, 516pp.
They are £34 each. I bought one, then a few months later, the other volume.
They are available in Kindle format!

6. <The Queen's Gambit Accepted: A Sharp and Sound Response to 1. d4> by Chris Ward.
Ward wrote a superb book about the QGD, many years ago. I think this is useful for a book about the QGA. A total antidote to 1. d4, 2. c4.

And now some total clinkers. NOT those well-known garbage chess books.

The following are really bad chess books.

1. <Capablanca: A Compendium of Games, Notes, Articles, Correspondence, Illustrations and Other Rare Archival Materials on the Cuban Chess Genius Jose Raul Capablanca, 1888-1942> by Edward Winter. 360pp. c. £35. The title is the best thing.

2. <Larsen: Move by Move> - Cyrus Lakdawala
Paperback, 488pp.

3. <Emanuel Lasker Volumes 1, 2 & 3 - Forster, Negele & Tischbierek>. £55 each.
This book is unbelievably boring and tedious. Just look through it, then forget about it.
AT THIS SAME TIME a totally superb book has just come out: <Emanuel Lasker All Games Volume 1 & 2: 1889-1940 (2 books)>, £55 for two books:
Volume 1 covers the time Lasker became World Champion and played matches against Steinitz (twice for the World Championship), Bird and Blackburne amongst others. He also took part several famous tournaments including Hastings 1895, St Petersburg 1895-96 and Nuremberg 1896.

Volume 2 covers the time Lasker played matches against Marshall, Tarrasch, Janowski, Schlechter and Capablanca for the World Championship. He also took part several famous tournaments including St Petersburg 1914, New York 1924, Moscow 1935 & 1936 and Nottingham 1936.

Hardbacks, 388 and 342 pages, Russian Chess House. A real bargain.

4. <Pal Benko : My Life, Games and Compositions>, £140. Who is the most famous chess player out of Benko and Fischer? Who published the most plush, most opulent book? Benko.

.....
Here are another 7 books:

<He received a letter from his bookseller, informing him that only seven copies had been sold, and concluding with a polite request for the balance.
Scythrop <[SKI-throp]> did not despair. <Seven copies,> he thought, <have been sold. Seven is a mystical number, and the omen is good. Let me find the seven purchasers of my seven copies, and they shall be the seven golden candlesticks with which I will illuminate the world.>.>

Feb-25-18  morfishine: <thegoodanarchist> Its pretty much the same thing. I have my settings for games set at 100 pts below my current rating up to 500 pts above, so I'm always playing very good players who mingle standard chess with Chess960. Technically, my rating for standard chess reached a high of 1870 a couple of years ago when I ceased training.

Its interesting how chess principles are the same for standard & Chess960.

If you want to improve your chess I would concentrate on openings, doing tactical puzzles every day and honing your endgame. Oh, and you must keep this up every day, there is no time allowed for vacations, otherwise you will most likely fall back.

Yeah, that was my formula for many years, and I got to be a good player. I was winning prizes in the open section of (small) tournaments.

I was wondering, though, if your activity included anything helpful that I was not doing. Doesn't seem so.

Another thing I did was study complete games. I would set up a board, use a clock, and cogitate on the middle game positions as if I were in a tournament.

Then, I would make my move, punch the clock, and write it down.

Then I would check against the grandmaster's move.

Feb-25-18  morfishine: <thegoodanarchist> There is no shortcut. I was lucky to meet <Patriot> who guided me to solving puzzles and referred me to Dan Heisman, chess teacher and national master.

I really think the main ingredient to breaking through to the next level is just never giving up, keep on with your program and results will show themself.

It helps to be "tactically sharp" but if one is average here, then strong positional play can offset

I really admire those GM's that "took awhile" to get their GM norms. They stuck to it and finally got the GM title.

I was lucky to meet a French Canadian master at the World Open, when I was in my early 20s.

He told me about a kid who got "The Black Book" (Encyclopedia of Chess Middlegames) and solved all the puzzles without looking. The kid went from ~1500 to Expert!

I did the same thing and my rating shot up 300 points. But I never finished Part II, the hard puzzles, so I didn't make expert :)

Feb-26-18  morfishine: <thegoodanarchist> Well, for crying out loud, finish Part II, your expert rating awaits!

(I still got that huge Polgar book '5,334 Problems' in hardcover of all things that I've never started. 5,334 seems a funny number to stop at)

offramp: Old Offramp looks out upon a troubled world.
My predictions for the coming year.

MARCH 2018
In the land of SOD a riotous election.
A Sikh and a Muslim both fight for selection.

APRIL
Scandal in France from a woman called Cindy,
Dancing the tango and speaking in Hindi.

MAY
Songs of joy and tears of sadness,
Nothing will stop Catalonian madness.

JUNE
In the land of the bear he is sentenced to death
But salvation arrives with an icy breath.

JULY
The corn-chandler's foot is stuck in the pantry,
Judah and Ephron fight it out in the gantry.

I had 2 copies of that. I got them at a B&N or else Borders clearance sale. Dirt cheap, something like $4.99 each. They had a huge stack of them.

Wish I had bought more, and resold them on ebay. Don't have them anymore, gave them away in a move or something years ago.

Nowadays there are lots of tactical software products on the market

AUGUST
With ten million and seven mirrors life is created,
Snow wind sleet rain, all unabated.

SEPTEMBER
A stuck pig speaks. It says goodbye,
The sight of a victory goal passed us by.

OCTOBER
In Goshen he is blessed with a shekel weight.
But his wife in a chaise-cart still turns up late.

NOVEMBER
At the picture of him she does throw his number,
Rousing the good-natured man from his slumber.

DECEMBER
Four soldiers, one cupboard, and they have one master.
Aholibamah returns to avert a disaster.

JANUARY 2019
The bright jewels lie clammy, and busting and bloom,
A sailor is robbed as he sleeps in his room.

FEBRUARY
The entire battle hymn sung like a bad hangover,
Amazing news for Haus Hannover.

Feb-26-18  morfishine: <offramp> Those are some morbid, dark predictions.

I used to make predictions under the moniker 'Nostramarcus', but while disasters were frequent topics, I had foreseen nothing as disturbing as your predictions

offramp: <morfishine> it's odd but I don't find them too bleak. What about the one where teh guy gets his foot stuck in the cupboard door? I think we'll have to wait ans see how accurate they are.
Feb-26-18  morfishine: <offramp> Maybe I jumped off the deep end with that comment. In any case, I thought his foot was stuck in the pantry (July), While the cupboard is mentioned (Dec)

But I find these most interesting from salvation arriving with an icy breath, stuck pigs, unabated snow/sleet, a ripped off sailor & cupboards & pantries

I will have to resuscitate 'Nostramarcus' and work up some of my own current predictions

Biggest dilemma ever: if someone posts something on your forum, and you want to answer it, do you post it on your forum, or their forum (if they have one)?

Don't want to do both, as that's spamming.
