Hello all,
I joined CG as an administrator, editor & front-end developer. I will start helping CG with administrative/editor tasks such as making sure tournaments and their bio's are complete and up-to-date, reading forums to help list and prioritize tasks at hand.

Missy quoted my post on the other forum (which was put up a few days ago) so I assume that was in mind.

My earlier posts on here were in direct response to Pete and others. Where is the hypocrisy?

Or his calling into question the manhood of some of your administrators?

None of this is allowed or condoned. Please blow the whistle so I can see these things and take care of them. Blowing the whistle helps me a lot by seeing the problem quicker and also seeing how often he's been causing problems so that I can start giving out lengthy probation. Also, if questions are asked on why I gave users probation I will have a record of everything the user has done.

jnpope: <petemcd85>, do you have the power to change event names? In particular the Simul/Blindfold Simul "events" that have recently been added to the Tournament Index ?

I'm not sure who is adding non-tournament/match events to the index, but I think it would be useful if the event name was more descriptive of the event, like <Morphy Blindfold simul, 8b Birmingham> and <Morphy Blindfold simul, 8b Paris> instead of both having the same event name of Blindfold simul, 8b (1858) and Blindfold simul, 8b (1858).

Blindfold simul, 8b (1858)

Blindfold simul, 8b (1858)

If you click on the link you'll see the events name has been updated, not sure why it's not updating the name in the Tournament Index. I will look into it.

  jnpope: Thanks.

Here is more poop floating in the punch bowl:

Simul, 3b (1840)

Blindfold simul, 6b (1867)

Clock simul, 12b (1939)

Blindfold simul, 34b (1937)

Dec-30-22  stone free or die: One can find far more with this simple search:

Tournament Index search: "simul"

Quite a few more.

Seemingly solved. It was the presence of curly bracket characters in the PGN field that was the problem. But why so?

Dec-31-22  stone free or die: RE: simul's

<I'll go through them and update the names. thanks>

De nada.

But a quick question about the search result page...

Tournament Index search: "simul"

It claims to have 123(!) pages of hits, 50/page.

That's a bit absurd don't you think? Basically seems to be including all tournaments.

I'd like the search to be a little tighter - first listing tournaments (events) with a match in the title (and maybe the Site?, Date?), then looking for hits with a match in the tournament page description, etc.

I also like an explicit hit count on the result page.

Actually, the entire search machinery framework could use an overhaul don't you think?

(Let's start with the basic of being able to search on PGN tag headers explicitly - like Event/Site/EventDate/Date/Type, etc.)

Thanks.

We can do that i'll have to talk to <steve>, right now he's really focused on upgrading to AWS cognito, so we can also finish the new analysis page.

The whistleblowing setup has a big hole. The whistleblower has no way of knowing if his message was even read, and no record of having blown the whistle.

Application of suspensions is wildly inconsistent, yet we don't get enough information to evaluate them fairly. (I guess that's intentional.)

For example, I was suspended for calling another poster a coward on the Rogoff page (well, OK). Yet on the same page a poster iswishing another poster would die, and...nothing.

Once I was suspended for wishing may we get rid of sockpuppets and spammers. On the other hand, chrisowen, cormier and harrylime can continue their spamming campaign undisturbed.

Jan-01-23  stone free or die: <<saff> The whistleblowing setup has a big hole. The whistleblower has no way of knowing if his message was even read, and no record of having blown the whistle.>

The biggest hole I know is the most obvious - whistleblowing and ignore-lists are essentially incompatible.

Putting a troll on ignore basically grants them carte-blanche to continue trolling.

Jan-01-23  stone free or die: <<messiah> Once I was suspended for wishing may we get rid of sockpuppets and spammers.>

Let's say that's why you think you were banned, I'm inclined to disagree, but since you raise the topic...

I'm not sure you understand what either a sockpuppet or spammer is <messiah>. Truly.

E.g. I believe you think I'm guilty of sockpuppeteering.

As far as spam goes, well, your harassment campaign against Carlsen definitely leaves many on <CG> cold, and it certainly could be considered spamming.

<On the other hand, chrisowen, cormier and harrylime can continue their spamming campaign undisturbed.>

I really wish people would leave <chrisowen> alone, for several reasons. Unlike <messiah>, his posts aren't designed to harass, and are specific to the PotD - not a grandiose plan to pollute the entire site.

Moreover, I think his intentions are good as he's commenting on the problem, even if people can't decipher his code.

If you don't like his comments, just put him on ignore and all your problems are solved (he never attacks other users, or chess figures, or anything negative - unlike <messiah>).

<cormier> is also a fairly low volume poster, and again never attacking any person or politic. Here again, the ignore list works well.

I think that to attack either <cormier> or <chrisowen> really requires going a little out of the way.

<Harry> is another story - but someone who clearly uses <CG> as a social outlet. But in his case let's just say he complains about being banned almost as much as you.

jnpope: Re: ignore-list and whistle blowing incompatibility.

Maybe CG could use ignore-lists as a form of whistle blowing. Set some threshold value and run a periodic cron-job to alert the site management... if a large enough number of users are actively ignoring someone then perhaps the ignored user should be investigated to see why members are opting to ignore that user.

I would personally set a second cron-job value that when exceeded would ghost the user. Basically putting them on a global ignore-list and the only way to read their posts would be to log-in and explicitly follow that user by choice. Such a feature would probably go a long way into cleaning up the forums for the general public.

Probably numerous other uses for monitoring ignore-list choices.
