 | | Phony Benoni: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... No Groat in that year; apparently he had military service in 53 and 54. I don't know the rationale behind playing Bob Skinner at first base and The Original Frank Thomas in center field. By the way, the Pirates made a killing in early 1959 when they traded Thomas for Harvey Haddix, Don Hoak, and Smoky Burgess. |

 | | perfidious: And to think the 1954 edition wasn't even the worst of some dreadful Pirates teams in that epoch: of course, if Groat had played at SS instead and been in his MVP form of '60, they would still have been awful. Really, though? They could do no better than play someone all year who did not make the Mendoza Line? |
|
| Jan-04-15 | | playground player: <perfidious> The 1954 Pirates could have had Honus Wagner at shortstop and still been awful. <Phony Benoni> Not only were Haddix, Hoak, and Burgess integral members of the 1960 world champions, but Frank Thomas had a rotten year for the Reds in 1959. That the Pirates threw in Jim Pendleton and Whammy Douglas must have been but cold comfort. |

| Jan-04-15 | | Jim Bartle: "By the way, the Pirates made a killing in early 1959 when they traded Thomas for Harvey Haddix, Don Hoak, and Smoky Burgess." I did not know that. That's a true one sided trade. Haddix wasn't that great, though. Couldn't even get Aaron out in a clutch situation. |

 | | perfidious: The '60 champs were part of a string of one-offs in the NL which followed the Dodgers' run and the Braves' hegemony which might have been in 1957-58: 1961 Reds, '62 Giants and 1964 Cards did it for the one time and one time only. |
|
| Jan-04-15 | | Jim Bartle: It was Milwaukee that blew it. They had the team to win every year through at least 61, but didn't win after 58. They did things like platoon light-hitting Frank Torre with slugger Joe Adcock, overwork Spahn and Burdette, and use Buhl as a pinchhitter. (One of those is false.) |

Last time Cincinnati Bengals won in the postseason was January, 1990 at home, who did they beat? |

Jan-04-15
 | | OhioChessFan: I seem to recall that game. Their opponent doesn't exist any more. |

 | | WannaBe: I guess all those empty fixer-upper run-down homes are sold-out, and now Detroit need to bring in pre-built homes to meet the surging demands. http://news.yahoo.com/shipping-cont... |

 | | Phony Benoni: What's so frustrating is how their offense keeps changing from the Irresistible Force to the Immovable Object. What they need is an A-List Running Back and some sort of a consistent running game. Can't depend on wide receivers to pick up third-and-ones. |
|
| Jan-04-15 | | Jim Bartle: As I understand it, teams now think a top running back is not that important, at least compared to other positions (unless you have a truly great one like a Sanders or a Dorsett). New rules make passing easier and easier, and running depends mostly on the line. |
|
Jan-04-15
 | | Phony Benoni: I guess an elite back isn't what I'm thinking. Just somebody who can get touch yards and keep drives going, but with just enough breakaway potential that the defense has to plan for him. That non-interference call was a third-and-one, and the Lions threw the ball 20 yards downfield. That's not a high percentage strategy, but they just don't have that kind of confidence in their running game. |
|
| Jan-05-15 | | Jim Bartle: A dependable power back. Gotta have one. |
|
Jan-05-15
 | | perfidious: <Jim> First I recall reading of Bob Buhl was a piece in '74 which detailed the worst-hitting pitchers of all time. While I do not remember who actually got the palm, among others, a fellow called Ron Herbel was also mentioned. |
|
| Jan-05-15 | | Jim Bartle: The usual suspects: Buhl, Herbel, Dean Chance. |
|
Jan-05-15
 | | perfidious: <Jim> Now you mention it, Chance was another--curiously, do not believe either Koufax or Preacher Roe made it. |

<That non-interference call was a third-and-one, and the Lions threw the ball 20 yards downfield. That's not a high percentage strategy, but they just don't have that kind of confidence in their running game.> What drove me crazy is that they then punted on fourth down (after failing to draw Dallas offside). If you want to throw long on third down, fine, but if it doesn't work, you gotta go for it on fourth. Maybe Jim Caldwell just had a brain lock after the officials picked up the flag. Then the punter shanked it 10 yards...bet he got a warm reception when he got back to the sideline. |
