Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
French Championship (2012)

Romain Edouard, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Etienne Bacrot and Christian Bauer all had 7/10 going into the final round. However then there was the shock news of the death of Christian Bauer's 4 month old child. On the proposal of the players the 11th and final round was cancelled. Edouard, Vachier and Bacrot were to play off for the title on Saturday but on further reflection it was decided that all 4 players should share the title.

tarek1: My deepest condolences to Christian Bauer and his wife in this sad day.

The play-offs will be played tomorrow between Bacrot, MVL and Edouard.

It is still unknown how and why this happened, perhaps some accident but as of now it hasn't been published.

Aug-24-12  brankat: Tragic news indeed. Sincere condolences to the Bauer family.
Aug-24-12  MarkFinan: Thats terrible news!
Aug-24-12  stanleys: Sincere condolences to Christian Bauer and his family
Aug-24-12  Wild Bill: OMG. That is awful news. Our condolences go to the Bauers.

I have to say that a dark horse who gets as far as M. Bauer did gets my sentimental support, and as I watched the games each day I said quietly to myself, "Go, Bauer." The French national championship seems unimportant now.

OBIT: My French is pretty weak, but is the following article basically saying that the other first place finishers wish to have the playoff games cancelled due to the exceptionally tragic circumstances?

Aug-24-12  Layson: <OBIT: My French is pretty weak, but is the following article basically saying that the other first place finishers wish to have the playoff games cancelled due to the exceptionally tragic circumstances?>

Indeed, it states that neither of the three players were in the mood to play for the title. In these exceptional circumstances, the French Chess Federation has decided to name all four leaders after 10 rounds joint winners.

Aug-24-12  brankat: This does seem to be a fair, indeed a very sportsmanlike decision.
Aug-24-12  Chess for life: That is really awful. My sympathies go out to Bauer and his family.
Aug-25-12  lost in space: Lord have mercy. Sincere condolences to Christian Bauer and his family.

Chessical: "Romain Edouard Etienne Bacrot and Maxime - Vachier Lagrave, all three of whom qualified for French Championship tie-break, have finally told the French Chess Federation, that they were not, in view of the exceptional circumstances, able to participate.

The Federation, sensitive to the point of view and emotions of the players, decided to give the title to all four players who were tied at the end of the tenth round of the National Championship of France 2012."

Aug-25-12  chessbug: What a horrible tragedy.
My condolonces to Christian Bauer and his family.
