May-23-13  fisayo123: My money is on the young phenomenon Rapport.
May-23-13  waustad: <fis>That wouldn't surprise me at all, but I'd like to see the Rasta Swede do well.

  HeMateMe: Good luck, Nigel!
May-25-13  waustad: I'm impressed that Grandelius managed to survive against Rapport considering his time deficit. 3. h4 seemed to throw him for a loop and he was way behind on the clock whenever I looked in on the game.
May-25-13  Harvestman: Short recovering well from his first round loss.

May-26-13  JPi: Please to see GM Nigel Short so inspired.
May-26-13  Prugno: Round 5 saw some really interesting games today. The finish of Grandelius-Berg, with passed pawns and promotions all over the place, was particularly spectacular.

May-26-13  Shams: Not one but two very fine wins for White today in the English.

Btw, that's actually not mate (there's 26...Ke6)... should be the other way around - 25.Bc5+ N(c/d)e7 26.Qg8#.

Dionysius1: It looks to me like Short has found a draw against Sokolov. My sense of it is that he'll have to sacrifice his N to stop the a pawn queening, but as long as he can exchange the rooks in that melee, and his king can get back to the h-side in time, he should be able to stop the h pawn queening because the white bishop can't control h8. Long breath.

Dionysius1: Draw agreed, so Short and Sokolov are joint leaders with 4/6 and 1 round to go. Come on Nigel!

Oops. My variation actually loses. Even 27 Re1+ Ne5 28 Qxg7 Qxg5 doesn't help.

I was so impressed by Nigel's concept that I missed that it had to be a precise move order.

Dionysius1: Short Tikkanen interesting situation at http://www.limhamnssk.se/live/sigem... Move 34, and Black is very short of time. I think the position is about level but dynamically - so for example, white might be able to win blacks d pawn
