Tilburg Interpolis 1985
Compiled by Tabanus
--*--

The 9th Annual Interpolis Chess Tournament held in Tilburg, Netherlands in 1985 was a Category 15 event. That year marked the shift in the event from a round robin to a double round robin. The eight participants were Jan Timman (Elo rated #3 in the world), Viktor Korchnoi (#5), Robert Hübner (#8), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (#9), Lev Polugaevsky (#13), Oleg Romanishin (#15), Roman Dzindzichashvili (#21), and the previous year's winner Anthony Miles (#30). Korchnoi played in Tilburg for the first time. Five players (Timman, Ljubojevic, Polugaevsky, Romanishin and Miles) had participated in the Interzonal tournaments earlier in the summer. The scheduled rest days were August 31, September 4, 7, 11, 14 and 16. The prize money was set at 86,500 Dutch guilders, with 20,000 guilders to the winner. Playing time was 1-6 pm. The tournament director Jan Rennings was happy with the new arrangement of only four tables and four demonstration boards, and stated that this is how it should have been all along.

It was during the third round game against Romanishin that Miles began to suffer extreme back pain. He was forced to take powerful painkillers and lie flat on a massage table during his games in order to participate in the remaining rounds (photo: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h9mMz7jr4...). On September 3rd, when Game 1 of the Karpov - Kasparov World Championship Match (1985) was played in Moscow, the pain was so bad that he had to postpone his Round 6 game against Polugaevsky. Later on, some of the players claimed they felt uncomfortable with their opponent lying on a table in front of them, and before Round 10, four players (Korchnoi, Hübner, Ljubojevic and Dzindzichashvili) filed an official complaint. Miles' game against Romanishin was transferred to a private room, but Romanishin refused to play there, and eventually the game was transferred back to its usual place. In Round 11, "Dzin" preferred to play the game standing in front of Miles on the table, and in Round 12, Miles and Hübner agreed to a scandalous draw. Leading the tournament by a whole point, Miles then lost to Polugaevsky in Round 13. Miles' version of what happenened is given in detail in New In Chess (November 1985) and in his book 'It's Only Me'.

Miles won his last round game, but so did Hübner and Korchnoi, and the three ended equal first with 8.5/14. They shared 47,500 guilders (about $29,643 in 2018 value) in prize money.

Raymond Keene wrote in his column in The Spectator, "Tony Miles nearly repeated his feat of last year at Tilburg, though this time he had to share top honours with Korchnoi and Hübner. I was particularly impressed by Tony's 100 per cent against Korchnoi and Ljubojevic and his generally high quantity of decisive games. This was evidence of his immense drive and fighting spirit in what is undoubtedly the strongest tournament of 1985. Tony's achievement was all the more remarkable in that he played much of the tournament stretched out on his stomach on a hospital trolley, due to a back injury."

Korchnoi and Timman next played in the Montpellier Candidates (1985) which started October 12th.
